Hey folks, its been mentioned on and off in other threads but I am well into setting up a 2004 era retro PC.

It's now the year 2024 so why not take a look back a nice round 20 years, plus or minus one or two because hey, it's my project and I'm having a absolute boatload of fun. 2004 is the year I graduated high school (year 12, age 17 in Australia) and while I had a pc for years before this, decent ones even, it was the year I started really pouring myself into the hobby, including buying my first ever top of the range GPU on release. I remember visiting TPU for a perhaps multiple years and lurking before finally signing up in '07. This year and era in general holds a very special place in my heart, and attending LAN's (while I have continued on and off, but overall dwindling since that era) was a defining social event of the 21st century, gosh I miss them, what I'd give to go back and get lots of copies of games that I want to install right now!

The rig itself is a mixture of era specific and era appropriate, with hopefully more and more specific parts joining the fray as time goes on. It's also set up with ease of use and hardware in mind, hence a newer pci-e board.

It is a distinct mission objective to have the box remain totally offline, I want this to be set up as a standalone experience to last the ages, just to be able to dust it off, plug it in, and play whatever I want again.

Hardware.
  • Intel Q87 M-ATX / i5 4590 / 2x4G DDR3 1600 / Sata SSD 256g- the most egregiously non era specific parts, however I am A'ok with this, it makes the system snappy to use, and importantly basically eliminates any CPU bottleneck, allowing any card I can throw in to operate at it's fullest potential (GPU bottlenecked is where I want to be). I actually have recorded benchmarks from when I mained a 6600GT, and 3dmark scores/fps can be within 5% of original, incredible!
  • Antec 1080 Soho server tower - released in 2002, but like a sign from above, it's build date is in 2004.
  • Nvidia 6600GT (any so far several other era cards being tested, because why not, although my endgame cards are 2004 high end ;) ) currently as of today messing with a 7600GT. I have (or they're ordered) likely a half dozen or more cards that'll get a run in this box.
  • Hyundai ImageQuest Q770 - 1024x768 @ 85hz and 1280x960 @ 70hz are the interesting and useable resolutions, may consider better CRT if it isn't eleventy billion dollars.
  • MS optical mouse and Wave keyboard, likely will be chasing some cool era peripherals.
  • Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS is on the way.
Software
  • Windows XP. I've gone for 64-bit which ultimately may be something I need to revisit and go to 32 and start again, but so far I've gotten the vast majority of what I wanted working well.
  • Winamp - it really whips the lama's ass!
  • Daemon Tools [Lite] - where would we be without it
  • GPU-Z
  • Fraps
  • MSI Afterburner/Rivatuner SS/Kombustor
  • A growing list and benchmarks, 3dmark 2001-through-06, Aquamark 3, various canned benches like street fighter 4 and DMC4
  • Many of the games worked first try, many required significant time, trial and error etc with patches, nocd cracks and so own. I either currently own or purchased and lost physical copies of everything I am using. No i don't feel bad.
Pics of current state enclosed below, including all working games, the ones in the lower grouping don't work....yet.

Right off the bat, there's things I'd love to share or get help with from the brains trust.
  • The CRT has scratches in the anti glare coating.. not sure how to deal with that, but I'd rather not open it up
  • Worth disabling cores down to a single or dual for either better performance or hitting era appropriate better? I'm content with it as is, but want opinion.
  • So far no attempt to get Half Life 2 running will work, I get a 128MB system memory error after the launch screen with valve face
  • 3dMark 2001 wont launch either citing me not having 128MB system memory. - I suspect this and HL2 are related to XP64.
  • Anyone remember how to pencil mod cards of this era? 6600GT/7600GT so far.
  • Star Wars Republic commando just won't launch, halp (send error report)
  • What would be the best way to take a full system backup? if windows ends up breaking somehow or corrupting I don't want to manually have to do it all again if it can be avoided, it's currenly humming along.
This has consumed my spare time over the last 3 ish weeks, it's my ongoing 2024 project top get it into a hardware and software 'end state' where it's a pure experience box / time capsule. I've done likely the vast majority of the work so far, presuming I don't need to wipe and start again with xp32, but now it's lots of getting more games running one by one, testing and overclocking era cards and so on.

What a beauty, and it's still running!

2004 was a sweet year for gaming. Doom 3, Need for Speed Underground 2, Half-Life 2, Warhammer 40k Dawn of War... Not to mention, I got my first ever AMD rig in the form of an Athlon 64 3000+, 512 MB RAM (that I upgraded to 2 GB) and a Radeon 9600 XT. I was drooling over reviews of the 6600 GT, but then I got a good deal on an ex-display X800 XT which was just as good, if not better. Sweet memories! :ohwell:

Are other games running? If so, it must be some kind of driver issue.

yeah in the screenshot of the desktop, all the games in the main clump (30 or so, I think I got two working since posting lol - Prince of Persia Warrior Within, and Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow) are working beautifully, so it has to be a software thing, either XP64 bit shenanigans, driver versions, service pack stuff...

I also had a 9600XT (gecube extreme), then a HIS Radeon 9800Pro IceQ, the first card I bought the top dog of was the 6800 ultra, which is AGP and I still have it, but I have a pci-e one on the way, as well as an X850XT, I suspect after much testing it'll be one of those two which remains in there to hold to 2004 video hardware.

Good luck with the project.
As for modding the GeForce6600 , well that model of the card is without a pin molex connector for auxiliary power , some did. Oh my bad, I went up the page to check what's the actual card in the pc.

Yeah this and the 256mb 6600 (non GT) have no power connectors. Very impressed with the 7600GT too, I think if I could pump volts into it it might end up faster than an X850 XT or 6800U. I put a dead cards zalman VF700 on it, tops at 54c after long heavy testing, that same VF700 will go on the 6600's easily too.

I'm on a mission to compare 6600GT to 6800U to X850XT and 6800U, I can't find any true direct comparisons from in the day, so I'll do my own, both at stock and max oc for my samples.

2004 was a sweet year for gaming.

You forgot about the OG Far Cry. The first DX9 game released if im not mistaken. I vividly remember pushing pixels out on my 9800 pro. Oh yes what a sweet time it was.

OP great list of installed games for that era! I did have the majority of those back then too. Me and my mates also got into Tribes Vengeance 1vs1 via lan. Was pretty cool too. I also liked the original Star Wars Battlefront and noticed you had No. 2 installed. Btw, also had a 6600GT agp that ran on my IC7 Max3 on a 55" DLP. Good times boys! So much nostalgia for me!!

Do you think the original Stalker belongs on that desktop or Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion?

The X850XT wins in most games. Doom 3 was always better with Nvidia. The only thing I liked about the 6 series Nvidia cards vs the Radeons at that time is they supported pixel shader 3.

Did I? ;) it's installed and running great, loved that game, beat it multiple times. I get goosebumps from the intro loading :D

Yes Stalker is on the (to do) game list for sure. Elder Scrolls was never 'my' kind of game, but I have a feeling I installed oblivion back in the day just because of the visuals.

Having said that, any and all era games are welcome on this box, I plan to lend it to my best mate when I'm at a hardware/software end state (or close enough) for him to load games he wants to as well, unless I get them on there first. Taking all requests basically!
The X850XT wins in most games.
I suspect from what I've gathererd so far, an X800XT /X850XT will ultimately be what remains in this box. Although the 6800U was the first top top end card I bought, and holds a special place in my heart, maybe my favourite GPU of all time.. I suppose I'll need countless hours of benching, gaming and over clocking them both to decide :D

Eh, 2004 was my personal worst. Almost died from diseases and had extremely rough time at school mostly because of that.

If I've gone for a nostalgia build it would definitely be a coffee modded Z170 with 8600K on top of it because everything about my childhood screams "that was total bullshit" and my adulthood is leagues better.

Solid game choice, good luck, have fun!

Nah you didn't. I saw it on your desktop :) I was replying to AusWolf.

Also, the original Need for Speed was a blast. Me and my mates spent countless hours on that.

Oh, I forgot one, the original Call of Duty!! If that fits in your genre.

I suspect there's an age divide here, and I'm sorry that era is a negative association for you. I think I'd have room for another retro build between this and anything 8600k era, like 2009/10 maybe, hayday of multi gpu, dedicated phsyx cards, Dx10 coming into its stride... Oh dear I think I've just committed to the next project

Yeah there are NFS games that predate this I want to put on, underground (1),hot pursuit, but I feel much older than that is likely best left for an AGP system that I'd also like to get to eventually.

Call of duty absolutely, 1 and 2 and even united offensive are in the list, just struggling to get a copy going so far. Also medal of honour (allied assault?)

So the OS is so old it predates ingrained ability to leverage turbo clock speeds from Intel chips, worth installing the driver to get 'up to' 3.7ghz from the base 3.3? I really doubt anything is CPU limited right now but could be fun.

Also bump on the most pressing questions;

  • Best way to take a full backup of the entire disk / current state to restore from if it all goes south
  • options or advice on how to deal with scratches in CRT anti glare layer
In update news, got more games going, COD 1+2 and Riddick - Escape from butcher bay :)

how to deal with scratches in CRT anti glare layer
Just remove it if possible. Glossy displays have their flaws but if you don't use your display the way the sun shines directly at it (seems 90+ % users use monitors the wrongest way possible since glossy monitors aren't really manufactured anymore) you will be just fine.

yeah in the screenshot of the desktop, all the games in the main clump (30 or so, I think I got two working since posting lol - Prince of Persia Warrior Within, and Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow) are working beautifully, so it has to be a software thing, either XP64 bit shenanigans, driver versions, service pack stuff...
64-bit XP had terrible software support as far as I know. That's why l personally, never bothered even trying it. A lot of people slag Vista off, but in my opinion, it was much better.

The X850XT wins in most games. Doom 3 was always better with Nvidia. The only thing I liked about the 6 series Nvidia cards vs the Radeons at that time is they supported pixel shader 3.
That's what made me swap my X800 XT for a 7800 GS, which was a terrible mistake. That card didn't just overheat, but it has an extremely loud buzzer on it to let me know that it did by basically waking up the neighbours. It also had a non-standard cooler mount, so aftermarket coolers weren't an option.

You forgot about the OG Far Cry. The first DX9 game released if im not mistaken. I vividly remember pushing pixels out on my 9800 pro. Oh yes what a sweet time it was.
You're right - it's just not really my cup of tea, so my memories of it are a bit blurry. :ohwell:

Do you think the original Stalker belongs on that desktop or Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion?
I concur. :)

  • Best way to take a full backup of the entire disk / current state to restore from if it all goes south
I would clone it onto a spare hard drive.

Gees, they are hard to find now! It was AGP yeah? I have seen/heard of a 7950 GT AGP but never seen one in the flesh.
