From the first time I saw MSI's Project Zero motherboard I knew I was going to have to do this...may as well be the guinea pig. I've always hated my pc's interiors with the crappy cables routed in various directions and I finally have a chance to eliminate that mess once and for all.

The case for such a motherboard is a bit problematic unless you are willing to do some surgery. I believe I have located a case which may prove to minimize such surgery and at the same time serves my intended function of this pc...my daily driver. I'm a bit weary of having to keep my gamer spun up all day.

The only part that will be on hold is the cpu which is due on the market at the end of this month...AMD's 8700G. Once I have confirmation that MSI has a updated bios for this cpu I will then purchase memory. All other parts are inbound as we speak. This should turn out very clean looking, especially with no gpu taking up space.

Parts inbound and desk is ready to accept the extra unit. It will sit to my left and both desktops will use the same monitor/keyboard/mouse via a KVM switch. Got my remote sensor panel up and running this morning.

I had a 5700G and liked it about as well as any cpu I have ever had, but my gf was in need of a pc so it got donated to the cause. I'm thinking the 8700G will be a keeper for a very long time which is the reason I'm going a bit overboard with the build. If I'm going to have to look at it every day for years to come I at least want it to be pleasing.

If I may ask what are you using to display your stats on old phone?

I use a 2nd monitor, but your way would save a little bit of power I think.

Nice looking Aquarium.

Hide Australia under your mouse. Country doesn’t exist :D

I really like this King 95 case, but the cables just kill the looks. I may try some solid black cables in the hope they will sort of disappear lol. Now that you have me thinking about it I may just yank those sleeved cables out later and just use the factory black cables on the psu...can't possibly look any worse. All cables suck and here we are trying to highlight and fancy them up. :p

It's a old (2016) Samsung Tab A I snagged off ebay on the cheap. I'm using Odospace and AIDA64 Extreme. I did not realize until I had it in hand that the Samsung tablet will not charge from a usb port. No big thing really as it has a great charge/battery life and it will only be used with the game rig.

Edit: I just now determined that the usb cable is indeed providing somewhat of a maintenance charge. There is such little draw I suppose it is able to keep the tablet at 100%. I was a bit puzzled because it says no charging, but the tablet was on for eight hours or more and showing no depletion. The usb will hold the tablet at whatever percentage it currently has, but will not gain. Win for me! :toast:

My suspicions were correct...the King 95 looks much better with the black cables. They almost blend in to the point of obscurity depending on the light..thank you Phil for getting me thinking about it. Screw a bunch of sleeved cables.

Maybe I missed somethin, but I thought the objective of the new mobo designs was to get rid of all of the cables by moving them to the back side of the mobo, as well as ditching the GPU cables by adding the extra power socket.connector just after the main pcie slot....

Yet you say it should be a clean build, "especially without a GPU"... ???

Did MSI fail to include that extra socket on this particular mobo or what ?

I know it will be a while before Ngreediya & AintMostlyDone start making cards with the extra connector, but just sayin :D

What ASUS and maybe some other did was to have a video card produced that had the connectors on the back side of the card itself. There never was a gpu power connector on any motherboard I am aware of. They provided a small opening in the back wall just as they did for the motherboard connectors and you simply plugged your cables into the video card from the rear. If the segment grows I would expect the video card manufacturers to get on board with the change, but who knows when or if that may ever happen.

Edit: Came to my attention that ASUS did in fact have a card built with a server type blade for power and had a socket for it on their mb. That sounds kind of sketchy for mb traces considering how powerful some of the new video cards are...server applications use no such overpowered parts. Burn a gpu up and take out a mb with it?...no thank you. I would be more inclined to have the traditional power sockets just moved to the back of the card myself...nice experiment though.

When I said mine should be clean I was referring to the fact that I will not be using a gpu and there will be no cables...period. ;)

Although it does NOT show the new mobo's (but does mention them) it does show the GPU with the additional pcie-type power connector to eliminate the cables that I was talking about....Lookie here:

But I am certain I did recently see an article somewhere that did show the mobo's...

Yeah, you can see the problem with this rather quickly. If no other mb manufacturers are on board with the idea then the market idea dies. Nobody is going to invest in a gpu that only has a home in one vendor's motherboards. Even then you have to convince video card manufacturers to commit. It would be much easier for all involved to simply move the traditional connectors to the back side of the cards and provide a slot in the cases (which are already there anyway in most instances) for the psu power cable(s)...same effect as you can't see the cabling and you could still use the card in any existing case.

Like Gigabyte did...@4:00 in the video

In this video you can see the ASUS version and shows both gpu and motherboard connections.

Wow...just a simple tuck/rearrangement of the gpu cables really made a difference.

A single cable tie tightened it up even further. :toast:

Turned out the KVM switch I had was usb only so I purchased this one for the task. Probably going to mount it on the back side of the desk since it has a remote switch and it will help with clearing cable clutter. I'm interested to see how the 8700G performs @ 1440p.

Threw another pc on the desk and hooked up this KVM switch just to make certain it all would work as intended. Most of my ordered parts should begin filtering in this week.

The motherboard is lagging in transit supposedly due to weather, but the case is out for delivery today. Good news is MSI has introduced a new bios for the 8000 series chips and I can go ahead and flash the motherboard while waiting for the cpu.

Opened up the psu to take a look and was pleased to see they used flat ribbon cables. That will make it much easier to fold and manage in the back of the pc.

Your system looks quite nice.
To say cables suck seems quite harsh, considering without them you would have an overpriced and oversized paperweight.

I think it's readily apparent when I said "cables suck" I was speaking of "visible" cables. ;)

How does a motherboard shipped from CA arrive at Memphis, TN, then on to Montgomery, AL, then right back to Memphis? I do not understand UPS at all... :kookoo: Seems lately I get things much quicker from Amazon than Newegg.

I'm thinking Noctua should have labeled this as "Massive" instead of Passive lol. With the addition of low speed fans top and bottom of the case this should work out extremely well as a semi-passive set-up. The fans on the bottom will be reverse flow for intake and the top fans standard exhaust. Bottom fans will be Monarch's to tie in with the King 95's look nearby.

This is how the cooler will relatively sit inside...the case fans being in such close proximity on either end should work out well, if even needed. Tbh, the rgb fans will be providing a little bling lighting more than the need for air movement. At any rate, I will be sure to test it out. At 158mm tall there should be about a 1/4" clearance from the glass panel.

Well, if UPS tracking is to be believed the motherboard is out for delivery today. The reverse fan Monarch case fans I ordered are still sitting at Newegg awaiting pickup...after 5 days. I just robbed two fans out of the gamer so I can continue.
