I've got an opportunity to buy an HTC VIVE PRO 2 full kit at a decent price. I was wondering whats the best GPU to take full advantage of the headset?
I've got an rtx 3080 10gb. Is that good enough or should I look into upgrading?

Also wondering if using stuff like DLSS can help alleviate the need for a powerful GPU

Lastly, knowing that resolution and refresh rate isn't everything, whats the best vr headset to buy right now in terms of comfort/immersion/image quality? is the htc vive pro 2 the best right now?
(budget allows between 800-1200$ for the headset)

My main usage is going to be playing vr games (mostly looking to play elite dangerous and half life alyx)
and viewing 360 videos inside the vr headset

Heya. I'm not sure if you've made a decision yet or not, but I want you to know I had a similar dilemma around one year ago. I have an HP Reverb G2 V2 which has a resolution of around 5k by 5k. (2k by 2k per lense). At the time, I owned an RTX 3080 10GB, just like you. I personally ended up selling my 3080 and purchasing a 6900 XT.

Both cards perform fantastically in raster / non-RT (which is every VR game, to my knowledge). However, you're very quickly VRAM bottlenecked when running high resolution headsets. VRChat typically sees 12 to 14 GB, depending on the map. Other VR games such as Phasmophobia & Into the Radius consume around 11 to 12 GB when maxed out. It's very accurate to state that you will constantly be hitting VRAM limitations on the 3080.

Do NOT purchase a 7900 XT or 7900 XTX, as currently, the VR drivers for them are busted with microstutter being very common. The 6900 XT / 6000 series in general - works perfectly in VR - and is easily recommendable. With that said, the 4080 would be a perfect fit considering it's 16GB - but the price sucks as it's commonly over 1000 USD.

Your only other option is the 4090. 6800 XT. Or 6900 XT. Anything above a 6800 XT has plenty of raster performance for 99% of VR titles.

If you have any questions, let me know.

Quick edit: Your CPU is also very important for VR. I see that you have a 9700k, which is honestly a fantastic chip. However, some games might give you trouble hitting a 90 Hz cap for your headset. Running a 13700k @ 5.5 GHz / DDR5-7200 (tightly tuned), I still run into CPU bottlenecks very often - so just be warned that some less-optimized titles might be a struggle.

Thanks guys. That helps. I'll do some shopping and see what I can find on those 3 models
