Should I replace my PSU? If yes, with which of the following options?

Since I replaced my former RTX3070 with my current RX7900XTX last November I've been experiencing some hiccups, namely:
- Driver crashes;
- Black screen lockups (at least thrice);
- Reboots (at least twice).

Now, I do suspect my 5-year old EVGA 750 GQ (C-tier at the PSU Cultists' tier list) is long in the tooth. While using Outervision's PSU calculator gives me a value of approximately 675W, that'd apply for a new unit. Would you guys say replacing the EVGA is due?

So, looking at a possible replacement, here is a list of candidates and their local price:
- Corsair RM1000e (2023) Gen5 - ATX 3.0 Gold - R$888;
- MSI A1000G PCIE5 - ATX 3.0 Gold - R$975;
- Cougar GEX X2 1000W - ATX 3.1 Gold - R$1005;
- Super Flower LEADEX Platinum SE 1000W - ATX 2.2 Pt - R$840*
*The Leadex would be too long for my case (180mm vs 170mm nominal support... provided I don't remove the HDD cage. Were I to replace my 2 HDDs with a single SSD on the back mounting, I could make it work).

I'll be curious to hear why you are not looking at 150mm ATX 3.x Super Flower Leadex VII Platium PRO 1000w. Not available where you are shopping or some other reason?

The Cougar (ironically a HEC brand not using a HEC platform) is the only not listed in the Cultists list, but by both its Cybenetics report and Aris' review I'd say it's a speculative A-tier (or B+ at worst). Also, it performs as well as both the Corsair and the MSI, and has a 10-year warranty.

It looks like your current PSU can't handle the spikes of the 7900XTX very well. I doubt it's the power consumption.

I've mentioned it in other threads, but a 650 W Seasonic GX gave me no trouble at all while testing numerous games on the config in my profile, which is very similar to yours. The highest momentary consumption at the wall was around 500 W. I'm sure the GPU spiked above that on occasion, but the PSU didn't miss a beat. Also, my 600 W UPS never showed any sign of being overloaded.

Your 7900XTX Pulse is a 370 W TBP card at stock, so it shouldn't spike much higher than a reference card. I'd recommend getting a Tier A 750 W power supply with the highest efficiency you can afford.

It's not like I can't get my hands on 850W golds for less than what I listed. However, it seems modern 850W models most of the time don't have 3 8-pin on separate cables, and I'm not willing to compromise on using both connectors of a daisy-chained cable. Hence I listed 1kW units.

The MSI is mediocre.

The SuperFlower is solid but uses an already old platform in comparison to the ATX 3.0 units.

The Cougars not a bad choice.

The Corsair is solid as well.

I would go with whichever you can get the best long term warranty service with.

GL!

What PSU I end up buying notwithstanding, it seems to be a consensus here that my current 750GQ isn't up to the task anymore, right?

I wouldn't feel comfortable using the 750GQ with an XTX even if it wasn't having the issues you mention. I run a Seasonic Prime TX-850 with an XTX and I've never experienced a problem, but I believe that's a higher tier PS, and I've seen at the wall readings of almost 600W while gaming. I'd probably be better off with a 1000w unit to hit the 50% sweet spot, but it's too much to spend to replace something that's working.

The issues you mention point to power issues. Would you have a return option for the power supply if you install and find the problems remain?

Not if I buy in a Paraguayan brick-and-mortar. In a Brazilian e-tailer, though, by law I'd have 7 calendar days from when a parcel arrives to return anything with no questions asked (right to repentance).

I don't know about the 1000W model, but the 850W model of the Corsair RMe is known to have undesirable fan behaviour.

Of the PSUs you listed, I'd go with the Superflower if it's isn't too much trouble to accommodate its size.

Believe me, it'd be lotsa trouble.
Doable, but lots of work:
- Migrating everything from 2 HDDs to a single SSD;
- Removing the graphics card and the front SSD so I can remove the cage;
- Hoping there's not some hidden barb or bend which'd make the Leadex not fit even with the HDD cage removed;
- Reinstall all parts.

Seeing you live in Brazil, not the coolest place on earth (temperature wise :D), you'll probably dealing with high ambient temps especially in summer.
The MSI is tested on that and doing very well (not saying the others don't, just don't know if thay are tested on that), maybe something to consider in your decision.

https://www.anandtech.com/show/18720/msi-mpg-a1000g-pcie5-psu-review-balanced-power
If I'm not mistaken, Aris' reviews on Hardware Busters go beyond 40C as well.
And yes, particularly here at the border with Paraguay this summer was unbearable with 42C daily. Heck, it's still over 30C and autumn already started.

Ultimately, I decided to bite the bullet and purchase the Cougar in a Brazilian shop, for R$1100 (the prices I listed for it, the Corsair and the MSI were on Paraguayan stores, and the deal on the SF ended so it went back up). I will update the thread after installing it and testing to see if the driver crashes, blackouts and reboots end.
While the blackouts and reboots were very unreproducible by nature, the driver crashes that triggered them may be easier. Indeed, the latest of them happening was so stupid that it was my turning point to decide troubleshooting it: tabletop session with friends over Roll20 and Discord, and I decided to setup my Tab S6 as a secondary monitor. And we all know what happens with mismatching resolutions and refresh rates with RDNA3...

Nah. Get a 1kw minimum. I have the exact same card, and it will put lesser PSUs in to protection all day.

your PSU is trash but the issues could as well be just AMD Driver things.
does your PC shut off randomly under load or does that happen in low load/idle as well?

I'd call "Roll20 (on Firefox) and Discord with a second screen" an amazingly LOW load. However, we know that VRAM clock shoots up.
And I wouldn't particularly call a C-tier PSU trash. Sure, the 750GQ isn't up to my current standards, but it was never an issue during its 5-year operation. Just remind me not to ever send it to EVGA for RMA'ing.

Any particular differences from the Optional drivers offered by Adrenalin?
I literally can't discuss it. NDA. All I'll say is I've stopped wanting to throw the card out the window most of the time since I joined Vanguard.

God, isn't that the truth. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Should've known better.

I've never wanted to throw my card, though. Too expensive to bear with such a loss :roll:
And for what it's worth, I learned to tweak some settings on Adrenaline to reduce the occurence of the driver crashes in the games where it crashed a lot. Prime example: Phasmophobia - incredibly, I had to turn Chill off and it got a lot better, although still not bulletproof.

Seems that with the GEX X2 I solved the most easily reproducible driver crash source I had: the benchmark tool of Horizon Zero Dawn.
Seriously, it was ridiculous how easy it was to crash Adrenalin using it.
