So I've a pc with two graphics cards ( Nvidia)

However games ( and possibly windows) run on the secondary card, no display is plugged into the second card.

Windows recognises the top GPU ( with HDMI connection to screen) as GPU 1 and the second card as GPU 0( nothing attached)

I'm stumped, my googling failed, and so I come to you. Fellow geeks, for help.

Go into NVIDIA control panel and make sure the correct GPU is set as the default. (And manually set your I'm assuming miner program to use the other one)

There doesn't appear to be a global option for that.

I remember there being one when I had a laptop with an IGP and standalone GPU. It's been awhile tho

This is an old google image but has the drop down I remember.

Then in program settings there should be an option to select the other GPU for whatever programs needs it (if you're not doing it via configs or whatever)

That's windows built-in dual graphics support glitching out. Started with 1809 update onwards, on some older machines (mostly laptops). Windows would always default to Intel graphics and leave dGPU untouched regardless of control panel settings.
What you need to do is go to Windows settings => Graphics settings and manually select high performance GPU. Then, just in case, do the same in Nvidia control panel.

I do more than just game, means i don't need a separate computer for work as the work carries on as I play.

Edit : Unfortunately your suggestions did not work. This didn't use to be an issue when I had two non matching cards.

Curiously even when both cards are underload only GPU 1 shows it being under load.

Another edit : windows does not identify the correct GPU at all.

I'm confused too, GPU 0 should be the primary card and GPU 1 the secondary.
Perhaps pull them and reinsert the top card first so it is recognised as the primary.
It seems a BIOS issue.

Id remove all gpu related drivers using add or remove programs, then DDU, and then a mobo bios, chipset driver update. Then insert the card you want as the primary in the main pcie slot, install the driver with the second card removed.

I rebuilt the system into another case using a different motherboard and had the same issue. ( Same windows install)

I'll give this a go.

Thank you for suggestions, sounds silly but problems like this keep me up at night .
