I hope @freeagent forgives my transgressions against Thermalright, but I need a break from TR after the PA120 shed white paint flakes all over my motherboard. I would've called it appalling, but it's exactly the kind of quality standard I've come to expect from Thermalright's bigger products.

Fun fact: Noctua has now begun bundling the AMB15 offset mounting bars with U12As. It's available as a separate kit, but I didn't have it included with either of the two U12A Chromax I tried last year. Not that it makes the U12A's value any better :D

Offset bars seem to be doing something...roughly. It is beating the PA120 by about a degree and a half, with only a single T30 (compared to dual T30 on PA120). Roughly on par with the FC140 at the moment, though I'm sure that if this 7800X3D was swapped with a 7950X or 13700K the PA120 and FC140 would surely leave the U12A in the dust. Can only compare that to 5800X3D results where the FC140 was beating the non-offset push-pull U12A by as much as 3.5 degrees.

Noctua makes some terrible design choices, imagine how beautiful that all white chromax cooler would be if it was just all white, and didn't say chromax on it.

Noctua just doesn't get it, which is why I don't regret going thermalright this round.

my thermalright heatsink is all metal so no paint, so fair enough on your decision process, i still dislike Noctua's design choice though. would look so amazing without those letters.

The zap on this thing is LOUD, so while it does not buzz like some, it is not suited to a bedroom.

? Thermalright has gigantic letters on its heatsinks lol

TR uses some blinding cold shade of white that somehow clashes with every other white object in my case, including the case itself. Reminds me of the cheap version of the Cablemod 12VHPWR cable, like it's tinted 3000K. The AXP120 is the same, but at least it still pairs better with what it goes in.

Black uses a different paint, so it's fine (FC140).

No flaking issues with the AXP120 so idk what kind of crack TR is smoking for its big coolers. This is already the second white PA120 I've been through, the first one had finstacks horribly misaligned.

I don't use painted heatsinks, mine are all metal, I have never looked at anything else as temps are all that matter to me, and no paint = a gain of 2 celsius if not more over painted heatsinks, probably more since I always use a more aggressive fan curve than most, so that heat is flying off the pipes :)

and if TR uses letters on painted ones, I disagree with that too. Shame we can't get a minimalist pure white build with no letters or fluff, but oh well

if you get a defective unit with misaligned fins you should refund it within the refund period, my FC140 has been perfect for me personally, i got lucky

All of my painted coolers are still ok, some coolers got a little chewed where you clip in, but that is because I was using extra thicc fans :D

My sons PA120SE ARGB blends nice with the Fractal white, and I think the mems that are in it might be white.. I would have to look

and no paint = a gain of 2 celsius if not more over painted heatsinks
Nah, I have the metal FC140 and a white FC140 and they are literally identical in performance. The one thing I like about my little EVO is that is does not have Thermalright painted in massive letters, it is a little more subdued

I'd take the EVO, if they made it in classic grey (ie. FC140, FS140). Sadly, they do not.

Still loving my contact frame. Swapped the coolers today and the 7800X3D IHS paste pattern is nothing short of perfection. And no messy cleanup :D

I did. That's why I don't have it anymore. lol
  • PA120 bent out of shape
  • FC140 bent out of shape in the same way
  • Second FC140 bent out of shape in a different way, got fed up and bent it back
  • SS135 decorative top plates falling off, coldplate permanently scratched 5900X
  • PA120 paint falling off
  • Contact frame included tube of paste exploded all over the inside of the box
My only good experience has been the AXP120x67, that's why it's my darling now. It's truly flawless, but then again, small downdraft coolers are harder to royally screw the pooch than towers

timestamped, jayz2cents says it does increase temps when painted. i think it depends on a lot of things too. i think if i were to do a push/pull fan setup at 80% one painted and one all metal, i'd see even 5 celsius gains, cause the heat comes off the metal much faster the higher the fan speed

Upgraded my internet to 1gig and then my network to 2.5gb by adding a new Trendnet 5port switch. Running PFSense on a Dell optiplex with Intel 10Gb x550 card for a router. X550 card in my main rig too. Charter sent me a new modem too, as mine has been a bit flaky as of late.

Not sure what to say to be honest..

I could run a bit of an experiment this weekend.. since you know how easy it is to swap their coolers around :)

I am quite sure Thermalright is smart enough not to slather on a thick coat of regular spray paint on their coolers  a difference of that magnitude just due to paint, would cripple AXP120x67 to L9x65 levels of performance.........

There are automotive paints that minimally affect thermal conductivity(?)

Also, what a "test". Power draw isn't even properly controlled, and adaptive Vcore?

I am positive I tested this already here somewhere :D

No difference, and I am extremely anal when it comes to a TIM application :)

I just run Linpack.. If I see my settings being reached with my 5900X then I am happy, that would be ~263w package power @ 260w PPT with 5900X, or ~143w package power at 140w PPT on 5800X3D. It is the only way I can peak my limits..

no need, I agree overall his testing isn't the best.

that being said I prefer the looks of all metal, so its just a preference thing. also I see no thermalright written anywhere on my end... i have the silver/metal FC140. i think it looks great next to the xfx 7900 xt series gpu's, black/metal/silver for the entire rig, with red metal on the PC case in the nzxt h710, its a killer look. i love it anyway no rgb

Maybe they're covering it in 5 layers of paint to hide their power levels. :D Someone comes out with something directly competitive and they stop adding so much paint and call it "v2".

oh to be clear I don't mind RGB, but this particular rig looks amazing without any.

mods are about to do the slam hammer on all of us though if this continues any longer...

A variety of USB-C chargers for some guests staying at our house overnight.

Feels like a ripoff paying $10 for them at a dollar store.

Looking for both your opinion on something, I have in my cart the Antec 140mm 30mm thick fans, they are on sale... I was thinking since my case only has one exhaust fan, I will put one there, and the other two on my frost commander 140 in push/pull (replacing the stock fans) which I find the stock fans don't move much air... so this would be a pretty massive upgrade...

thoughts on this? waste of money? go for it?

I’ve only tried the 120’s and they’re… ok. Worth about the $11 each you pay for them. I’d be concerned about being able to attach the 30mm thick 140’s using the stock clips. They’re both thicker and have a larger mounting pattern than the stock fans.

My 1.5 cents worth.
