Windows 10 users report broken apps on old computers - Neowin

"one theory is that the recent app updates rely on instructions that older processors do not support. In fact, many of the affected users run old-school hardware from the pre-Intel Core era, with long-outdated processors like Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon."

Well yeah, of course ancient hardware is going to have a hard time. I think it's unreasonable to expect a 15+ year old platform to work properly on a modern OS, the fact that it works as well as it does is a miracle.
That's like trying to run Windows 7 on a Pentium MMX and wondering why it doesn't work properly.

The other way around and inside out too!

By that I mean it is unreasonable to expect modern hardware to support legacy software forever, including legacy operating systems.

It is unreasonable to expect the latest applications to be supported by legacy operating systems.

You mention 15+ year old "platform", I say 15+ year old hardware - any hardware.

And what amazes me is how so many automatically blame Microsoft - even though it is HP, Intel, AMD, Epson, Samsung, etc. who have failed to (or simply decided not to) create updated drivers for their hardware so that it will work with the latest operating systems. HP, of course, would rather we buy a new printer.

Communication protocols are often developed by entirely different industries. For example, HDMI was developed by the audio/visual industry to interconnect components in home theater systems. Microsoft had nothing to do with Ethernet and even today is managed by IEEE.

People assume, incorrectly of course, that Microsoft is THE driving force in the advances of hardware technologies. That is nonsense. The state-of-the-art in the hardware technologies is advanced by the hardware industry itself - driven by competition, the market, and consumer demand.

The ATX Form Factor is developed and maintained primarily by hardware companies with Intel in the lead. Yes, Microsoft has a voice, but not the deciding one.

Nobody wants to replace perfectly good hardware. I get that. I don't either. But that is a fact of life. People replaced their old AM radios for FM. Black and white TVs for color. CRT for LCD. LPs for 8-Tracks for cassettes for CDs for DVDs - with reel-to-reels and VCRs somewhere in the middle. People replace their perfectly good cell phone simply because Apple or Samsung come out with a new one every year. :kookoo:

I only have two issue with my "very rare" Acer Ferrari 1200 Laptop. Windows 10 broke the mouse slider from the mouse pad. It has never worked from day one when switching to Win 10. The very latest 2024 update is not installing either, but I would think at some point it will fix itself. These are currently the only two issues i'm having with win 10, but the mouse issue will never be fixed..

What do you mean by mouse "slider"? Do you mean the touch pad? If not, then as I noted above, that is not Windows fault. Acer needs to develop the correct drivers.
