Hi,

I have a MSI Z97 Gaming 5 that once booted into windows the fans ramp up and down like crazy. No load on CPU or GPU and temps are really low under idle (35C) and under load (>60C).

I have the default smart fan controls set in bios and also no overclock on CPU or RAM... It happens randomly and never stays, under load it's dead silent.
Board also has no visible bent pins. Running stock 3 pin Coolermaster fans that came with the CM 590 Case.

What could be wrong with my board?

Thanks

Mabe you have a faulty fan do you have a spare to try, is the cpu fan ok?
I would have a look if you can control them with MSI control center though ,you can use it to set your own speeds, its a good app, i use it on my gaming 5 alot as i have a fan that sometimes didnt turn on.

Good luck:)

Weird thing is that its just ramping up for 5 seconds to max rpm and then back to normal. Happens with all the fans even the CPU fan. All of them work fine on a 775 board laying around.

Strange, i seem to remember before i went AIO that at start up that the cpu fan went 100% for like 5 secs or so,does yours do that? have you tried a bios reset?

It does that when powering and then slows down. But randomly does the same even when idle - nothing changed in the bios or system, just started doing it yesterday. Will check if the bios settings is correct, don't want any other software that bloats the PC on startup. Really hope the board is OK as I paid a hefty sum for it recently...

so the 4 pin cpu fan and both 3 pin fans are going up and down in rpm when windows has loaded? i can only guess that the fan controller might be on its way out? if so you could always get an after market one, where are you based?

Just been reading the excelent tpu review of the board here https://www.techpowerup.com/review/msi-z97-gaming-5/5.html
"On the board's bottom edge is a dual-digit POST display that displays error codes during the POST process, but it switches over to show CPU temperatures once POST is complete. The data to do so is provided by the Nuvoton NCT6792D Super I/O chip that is also responsible for this board's excellent fan controls and its onboard PS/2 port."
does the readout work and show post codes and then cpu temp? do you use any ps2 hardware? just so we can see if that chip is working ...

If it is pooched, there is always this http://www.phanteks.com/PH-PWHUB.html
hope that helps :)

I had one but unfortunately died on me in another build. I live in south africa and these things are hard to come by. It's a really decent board though.

I might have fixed this issue. For some reason the bios defaults to 60% pwm for the case fans at 40C and disables smart fan control. Enabled smart control and set a curve. System is dead silent and fans. So glad the board is fine.
