Momomo_us posted on Twitter about their finding of a BIOS firmware update for an Intel chipset motherboard from AsRock, others soon pointed out that ASUS had quietly revised a higher-end model as well. Both boards share the same socket platform - LGA 1700 - and currently support Team Blue's 13th Gen Raptor Lake CPU series, but new details presented on pages for the ROG Maximus Z790 APEX and B760M PG Sonic WiFi suggests that these models are pre-prepared for the (still heavily rumored) launch of Raptor Lake Refresh. The changelogs for their respective BIOS updates mention "compatibility for the next-gen" and "support for next-generation" processors. Raptor Lake Refresh is likely going to serve as a sort of interim release, since insiders think that desktop Meteor Lake-S SKUs are no longer on the menu, and a full-fledged next-gen upgrade - Arrow Lake-S - is not due until Q4 2024 or Q1 2025. Not much is known about how much more performant the RPL refresh will be when compared to the existing range, but more leaks are expected in the coming months. If it feels like you've seen a ghost, it's because Abit withdrew from the DIY PC component space around 2012, after fulfilling its support obligations for the last of its products shipped in 2008. Since then, the brand has been held by Universal Scientific Industrial, a mainland Chinese company that took it over from the original Taiwan-based Abit Computer.

BIOSTAR at its Computex 2023 booth announced HPACT (acronym for High-level, Performance, Ability, Capacity, and Time). It is essentially a self-imposed standard for product quality and capabilities of its motherboards. It sets minimums for the company's motherboard component choices, durability, and performance. A possible analog for HPACT would be "Ultra Durable" by GIGABYTE, and the way the company set tiers for it. If a motherboard meets all five of the design goals in that acromym, it will be labelled as "HPACT," and depending on the model, the acronym is shortened.

Back in October of last year, pictures from an ASUS event in China appeared online, showing off a pair of mATX motherboards that had most of its peripheral and power connectors on the reverse side of the motherboard. Now it appears that ASUS has decided to launch such a product, in the shape of the unforgettably named TUF Gaming B760M-BTF WiFi D4. The BTF part in the model name stands Back To (the) Future, although ASUS is most likely not allowed to use that term due to copyright restrictions, so it had to make do with BTF. Regardless of naming, the interesting part here is that all of the power connectors, the four SATA ports, the USB-C and USB 3.0 headers, as well as multiple other headers and one of three M.2 slots, are on the reverse side of the motherboard. This is all done to allow for cleaner cable management.

Other noteworthy features on the board include a single PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, one PCIe 4.0 x4 and one x1 slot, three USB-C ports, of which one is capable of 20 Gbps speeds and 2.5 Gbps Ethernet. As this is a mid-range board, we presume ASUS wants to test the waters so to speak, to make sure there's a market for such a product. However, one major hurdle is the small fact that there aren't any suitable chassis in the market and the product page even mentions that "This motherboard is compatible with specific case models", without going into any details. Presumably, ASUS will offer a suitable chassis, or have some partner(s) lined up that will provide a suitable chassis. Gigabyte announced something similar in May last year, but decided to team up with system integrators, something ASUS might be planning on as well.

The cheapest MSI motherboard based on the B760 chipset, according to a leaked price-list, is USD $170, for a PRO-series motherboard SKU that's usually considered entry-level for MSI.

The MSI PRO B760M-A WiFi DDR4 Micro-ATX motherboard, according to this price-list, goes for $170, followed by the PRO B760-P WiFi DDR4 (ATX form-factor) at $180. From here begins MSI's Gaming series motherboards. There are as many as four MAG Mortar SKUs. At $180, you get the MAG B760M Mortar DDR4. At $190 you get the MAG B760M Mortar (DDR5) and MAG B760M Mortar DDR4 WiFi; followed by the MAG B760M Mortar WiFi (DDR5) at $200. With this series, MSI is introducing a couple of MAG Mortar MAX SKUs, which probably feature better VRM or onboard audio. The DDR4 version is priced at $220, and the DDR5 version at $230. Moving a notch up, we have the popular MAG Tomahawk SKUs, with the DDR4 version at $220, and the DDR5 version at $230. The only MPG series SKU is also the lineup's only Mini-ITX one—the MPG B760I Edge WiFi DDR4, priced at $210.

It would appear that motherboards based on the upcoming Intel B760 chipset aren't much of a secret, as even online price comparison sites are now starting to post details about the upcoming models. German Geizhals has posted details about Biostars B760A Silver motherboard and although the site doesn't have pictures of the board, it does provide a drawing from what appears to be the manual. As this is an entry level model, there isn't too much to get excited about, but it appears to be a decent enough board overall.

The B760A Silver sports four DDR5 DIMM slots, a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, a PCIe 4.0 x4 slot and two PCIe 3.0 x1 slots, as well as three PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots for NVMe SSDs and an M.2 for an optional Wi-Fi/Bluetooth card. Other features include an HDMI 2.1 and DP 1.2 port around the back, as well as 2.5 Gbps Ethernet and a 10 Gbps USB-C port. The board has a front header for another 10 Gbps USB-C port, but there's no support for a 20 Gbps USB-C port. Biostar has at least not been stingy with fan headers, as a total of six are spread out around the board and for those that like RGB lights, there are also three ARGB headers. Geizhals isn't listing any retailers stocking the board as yet, so we don't get any indication on the cost of the board.
