Gamescom 2021 Will Be An All-Digital Event

The German Games Industry Association have decided to hold gamescom 2021 as an all-digital event. This decision was made after extensive discussions with partners and exhibitors. Thus, the organizers take into account the current situation, in which too many companies are unable to participate in physical events this year due to the still difficult development. In this way, they also meet the partners' strong need for planning security. This means that gamescom 2021 will be held exclusively digitally and free of charge for all gamescom fans. In 2020, gamescom celebrated numerous successes: Over 100 million video views across all formats and channels, more than 50 million unique users from 180 countries, and 370 partners from 44 countries. Building on this success, the digital offering is now being expanded further.

Gamescom 2020 Will "definitely" Take Place Digitally

The German Government today announced a nationwide ban on all major events until the end of August, effectively cancelling Gamescom 2020. Thankfully, this didn't come as too much of a surprise to the organizers and they had been preparing alternative options for some time. While the public in-person event won't be taking place a online digital alternative will be. Unlike E3 and GDC, Gamescom has time to prepare for proper a digital event and will announce more details shortly.

"Even though not all details are known at present, the nationwide ban on major events until the end of August will also affect the planning for #gamescom2020. Furthermore: gamescom 2020 will definitely take place digitally! We will provide further information shortly. "

NVIDIA 436.02 Installer Buggy, Always Installs GeForce Experience, No GDPR Consent

NVIDIA today released its GeForce 436.02 WHQL Gamescom Special graphics drivers. You can read all about them here. The installer of these drivers appears to have a major bug that forces the installation of GeForce Experience without obtaining GDPR-compliant consent from the user. With the ratification of GDPR, NVIDIA driver installers present a selection screen right at the start of the installation, which lets users opt to install GeForce Experience (and give their GDPR consent in doing so), but a second option lets users decline GDPR consent, forcing the installer to install GeForce drivers without GeForce Experience. A bug with the installer of GeForce 436.02 WHQL disregards the user's choice at this screen, and installs GeForce Experience without the GDPR-mandated user-consent.

Making matters far worse is the fact that you cannot deselect GeForce Experience from the list of components in the Custom Install screen. The Custom Install list lets you make the installer skip installation of optional components that are otherwise installed by default in Express Install (GeForce Experience features in this list only if a user gives GDPR consent in the previous screen). We're hoping that this is a simple installer bug by NVIDIA, because anything worse would put the company in violation of EU privacy laws. We at TechPowerUp are in the final stages of developing a free utility that lets users take complete control over their NVIDIA graphics driver installation, called NVCleanstall. Using this software you may skip lot more optional components than what the NVIDIA Installer allows, such as Telemetry. Grab a beta version of NVCleanstall from here.

Update 16:27 UTC: NVIDIA has removed the 436.02 drivers from their website, and confirmed that this is a bug.

Update Aug 21st: The 436.02 drivers are available again, and the GeForce Experience install problem is fixed. Look for the suffix "-rp" in the file name to identify the fixed version.

HyperX Announces the Cloud Alpha S Headset

At Gamescom 2019, Hyperx has announced an update to their Cloud Alpha headset, in the form of the Cloud Alpha S. This headset builds upon the company's previous Cloud Alpha, which is often recommended as the best choice in the $100 price-point. The new Cloud Alpha S sports bass sliders, which offer users a three-level adjustment for bass, adjustable on-the-fly to suit the content you're currently experiencing. There's also virtual 7.1 surround sound, and it remains to be seen how well this feature works. Virtualized soundstages aren't usually the créme de la créme of audio quality, but they definitely have their use-cases. The HyperX Cloud Alpha S will be available at $129, a $30 premium over the Cloud Alpha, on Q4 2019.

NVIDIA RTX 2080 Ti Ray-tracing "SOTR" Barely Manages 30-60 FPS at Full HD

Perhaps a lot of driver optimization and game patches are due, but early performance numbers for real-time ray-tracing on NVIDIA's thousand-dollar GeForce RTX 2080 Ti don't look encouraging. German tech publication PCGH tested the enthusiast-segment graphics card on "Shadow of the Tomb Raider," one of the poster-boys of NVIDIA's upcoming ray-tracing acceleration, and found that with all its eye-candy cranked up, the card barely manages 30 to 60 frames per second at Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels).

NVIDIA and Eidos (developers of "Shadow of the Tomb Raider") were quick to respond to the PCGH story. They stated that the build of the game demoed at Gamescom is pre-release, and the studio is still optimizing it for NVIDIA GeForce RTX series; and that the GeForce RTX hardware is running on pre-launch beta drivers that are yet to pack "Game Ready" optimization for SOTR. Catch PCGH's video presentation in the source link below.

Ubisoft At Gamescom 2018: All the Franchises, All the Time

We went to Ubisoft's floor space at Gamescom 2018, and it was easily one of the biggest ones (only really comparable to Blizzard's, in both size and apparatus). Naturally, the focus was on the heavy hitting franchises, like Assassin's Creed, where Ubisoft had at least three people dressed up in a thematically resonant way with the title's Greek setting, alongside a Spartan statue. Everywhere you looked there were people holding paper Spartan shields or pretending to be fighting with the Ubisoft employees; it was like a budget version of 300 was assaulting you from all sides. Like with almost all games, there was hands-on time for those willing to wait in-line.

Blizzard at Gamescom 2018: An Ode to Past and Present Successes

We visited Blizzard's floor space at Gamescom 2018, and what a space it was. Easily one of the more expansive areas, Blizzard outdid themselves with their multiple staging areas for the multitude of their developed - or in permanent development - games. Naturally, the crown jewel of Blizzard's space was World of Warcraft, but Overwatch stood just beside it, as if a wayward child trying to look over its ancestors' shoulder.

Microsoft at Gamescom 2018: Where's the Heart of Gaming After All?

We stopped by Microsoft's booth at Gamescom 2018 in Koln, Germany, to see what the behemoth company was pushing for its Xbox family of products - and, of course, Windows 10. However, the company's presence lacked most of its heavy-hitters - Halo was absent, Gears of War was as well. In fact, Microsoft's presence at this years' Gamescom was limited to Forza Horizon 4 and Ori and the Will of the Wisps, when it comes to in-house exclusives. Though that McLaren does look great over there, doesn't it? Oh my.

Gainward Teases Reveal of New Graphics Card Products Set on August 20th

Gainward, one of NVIDIA's exclusive board partners, has a relatively small presence in the West, and are much more focused on the Eastern markets with their product lines. However, being an NVIDIA AIB, Gainwards' teases count for the ecosystem as a whole - at least when it comes to new product generation releases.

With everything lining up for a new graphics card lineup reveal from NVIDIA's part at Gamescom in the 20th of August (just next Monday), Gainwards' timer-infused tease at Weibo of "7 days to your Glaring Eyes" seems to represent a triple-fan solution in a graphics card. It remains to be seen if NVIDIA will be taking a staggered approach to its graphics cards launches as in recent times, with their Founders' Editions being the first to market, soon followed by AIB's custom designs. That, of course, doesn't prevent any of the AIBs to announce finalized designs on their products - and if Gainward is teasing a new product (as they seemingly are) then other partners certainly won't be far behind.

NVIDIA Posts Cryptic #BeForTheGame Video Pointing at 20th August

When NVIDIA debuted its "Turing" GPU architecture through its recent Quadro RTX series, PC enthusiasts felt being left hung and dry. The occasion was SIGGRAPH, the biggest annual expo of digital content creators, and so a Quadro unveiling felt fitting. Come 21st August, and Gamescom will be almost upon us. NVIDIA is planning its own event in host city Cologne a day earlier. The theme of the event is "Be For The Game."

NVIDIA posted the mother of all teasers pointing to the August 20 event. It doesn't mention a new product launch, but there are enough hints, such as the back-plate reminiscent of TITAN V, combined with glossy green and black surfaces that look similar to the Quadro RTX reference boards. The video winks at both gamers and PC enthusiasts, with the first half depicting a sick build being put together. We can't wait!
The video follows.

NVIDIA at Gamescom 2017: ShadowPlay Highlights, Ansel AI Style Transfer and More

Yes, Gamescom 2017 is done already and it would be fair to say that Microsoft took a lot of press time with their Age of Empires IV announcement. This does not mean others were quiet, and indeed we missed what NVIDIA was up to until recently. They held a pre-event show where developers from the most popular games today- PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, Destiny 2, Middle Earth: Shadow of War, and Final Fantasy XV Windows Edition- presented new feature trailers (in 4K, of course) supporting NVIDIA's GameWorks technology.

In addition, there were hands-on sessions available with some other upcoming game releases including Pro Evolution Soccer 2018, Forza Motorsport 7, Need for Speed Payback, Project Cars 2 and the recently released Lawbreakers. These games came with some GameWorks announcements as applicable as well.
