PNY at the 2023 Computex, showed off an M.2-2280 SSD cooling solution with nor one, but two fans, in what is a sign of things to come with upcoming PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSDs. The cooler features an extruded aluminium monoblock heatsink with a pair of 20 mm fans at its two ends. The central portion of the cooler has the bulk of its aluminium fins. A top-plate has an RGB illuminated, stylized PNY logo, which can be synchronized with the lighting of your PNY XLR8 Verto EPIC-X graphics cards. It's smarter on PNY's part to market the cooler as a separate product, than part of any upcoming PCIe Gen 5 SSD.

DeepCool Readying Assassin IV Premium CPU Air Cooler For Launch

DeepCool debuted its Assassin IV Dual Tower CPU cooler earlier this year at the CES 2023 trade show - as covered by TPU at the time - its very eye-catching design was described as looking: "like (a) big dark cube inside your case, with a shroud covering all its sheet-metal." The flagship high-performance CPU cooler seems to ready for an imminent launch, with press material and product images being released today for the Chinese market. Early impressions indicate that hardware enthusiasts are appreciative of the almost all-black monolithic aesthetic, with some folks predicting that DeepCool is going to win computer hardware product design awards.

DeepCool press material states (via translation) that its Assassin IV CPU cooler provides super silent operation while dealing with up to 280 W of heat - Intel's latest high-end Core i9 CPUs could be tamed with relative ease. The heatsink is comprised of 7 heat pipes with a dual fan attachment that includes 120 and 140 mm FDB fans - said to operate silently at high RPMs. The fans are rated at 500 - 1700 RPM, with an airflow delivery of 79.1 / 58.06 CFM in performance mode, and 63.76 / 46.75 CFM airflow for the gentler quiet mode. Deepcool's specifications indicate that these cooling fans produce less than or equal to 29.3 dB(A) noise at peak performance, and less than or equal to 22.6 dB(A) noise in quiet mode. The entire cooling solution consumes 2.88 W in performance mode.

Nextorage Readying NE5N Gen 5 SSD Range With Bulky Heatsink

Nextorage Japan is preparing its NE5N range of PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSDs for launch in early June - listings have emerged on Newegg for 2 TB and 1 TB models - with a product page appearing recently on the company's (Japanese language) website. These units boast read and write speeds rated for operation up to 10 GB/s, and are based on Phison's E26 PCIe Gen 5 controller. Nextorage started off as a provider of PlayStation 5-oriented PCIe Gen 4 SSD products, due to company ties to Sony Corporation, but its upcoming NE5N range indicates that it intends to target buyers within the enthusiast PC market.

The initial batch of cutting edge SSDs are unlikely to end up in any PS5 consoles, thanks to a sizable dual formation heatsink - the Japanese company has filed a patent for the bulky two-level structure and heatpipe combination design. Gen 5 SSDs are said to be difficult to tame in terms of heat output, and manufacturers are going to great lengths (and sizes) to provide adequate cooling solutions in advance. Future versions of Nextorage Japan's NE5N NVMe M.2 2280 PCIe Gen 5 SSDs are being refined for compact PCs and laptops, so it will be interesting to find out about the intended thermal tempering for more cramped environments.

Thermalright HR-10 PRO Heatsink Prepared for Gen5 SSDs

Thermalright has quietly updated its product page this week, and has rolled out another SSD cooler that looks quite familiar. The HR-10 2280 PRO M.2 SSD heatsink is now featured on their website, where it sits close to a similar looking model - the now standard HR-10 2280. This non-PRO version was revealed late last month as a step up from the older HR-09 SSD heatsink. The brand new HR-10 2280 PRO sports a key upgrade over its passively cooled older siblings - a 30 mm 12 V cooling PWM fan has been integrated into the middle of the fin stack's body. Thermalright's latest M.2 heatsink also fully prepared for and compatible with the next generation of SSDs - its revised design will accommodate Gen 5 solid-state drive standards.

The HR-10 Pro is consists of four 5 mm-thick nickel-plated copper heatpipes that make contact with a user appointed M.2-2280 SSD, over a mirror-finish nickel-plated copper base-plate. The heatpipes loop through a dense aluminium fin-stack with slats designed to maximize surface area for highly effective heat dissipation. A die-cast metal top-plate with company branding completes the package. The HR-10 PRO weighs in at 95 g (so 10 g more than the standard HR-10). The heatsink measures 23.7 mm x 90.3 mm x 43.8 mm (WxDxH). Thermalright has not revealed any pricing or stock availability at the time of writing.

Bitspower Intros Low-Profile M.2 SSD Armor

Bitspower today introduced the Low-Profile M.2 SSD Armor, an M.2 SSD heatsink which, as its name suggests, is designed to be compact. This should come in handy for cooling mid-thru-performance segment drives that lack heatsinks, or for making them fit for use with PlayStation 5. The Bitspower heatsink is a simple hunk of extruded anodized aluminium, along with a thermal pad, and elastic bands that hold the heatsink in place. The heatsink is 22.2 mm in width, 70 mm in length, and 5 mm in height (thickness). The company didn't reveal pricing information.

Thermalright today rolled out the HR-10 2280, a step up from the company's HR-09 2280 M.2 SSD heatsink from 2022. Like its predecessor, the HR-10 uses two 5 mm-thick nickel-plated copper heatpipes that make contact with an M.2-2280 SSD over a mirror-finish nickel-plated copper base-plate, but the heatpipes loop through a denser aluminium fin-stack with slats that maximize surface area for heat dissipation. There's also a die-cast metal top-plate. The HR-10 is a tiny bit heavier than the HR-09, weighing in at 85 g (versus 80 g, but with a more optimized design). The heatsink measures 23.7 mm x 90.3 mm x 43.8 mm (WxDxH). The company didn't reveal pricing.

ASRock Intros Blazing M.2 Gen 5 Fan-Heatsink

ASRock today introduced the Blazing M.2 Gen 5 Fan-Heatsink, an active cooling solution for M.2 Gen 5 SSDs, and meant to be paired with the company's Socket AM5 and LGA1700 motherboards that have Gen 5 M.2 slots. The cooler is a 5 cm-tall hunk of extruded aluminium with a 30 mm fan ventilating it at roughly 5 CFM. There are five types of these coolers, each suitable for a particular type of ASRock motherboards. These coolers have been out since December 2022 as inclusions in motherboards, however, ASRock released the types 3, 4, and 5 (from the table below) today. The cooler is said to significantly lower temperatures of SSD controllers, minimizing performance losses to thermal throttling. These coolers are expected to be priced around $30 a pop.

Noctua Confirms AM5 Heatsink Compatibility and Announces Free-of-charge Upgrades for Low-profile Coolers and Older Heatsink Models

Noctua today confirmed that all its CPU coolers and mounting-kits that support AMD AM4 also support the upcoming AM5 socket, except the NH-L9a-AM4 low-profile cooler and the NM-AM4-L9aL9i mounting-kit. For the latter, Noctua announced the new NM-AM5-L9aL9i kit that will be available free-of-charge from end of October. Mounting upgrade kits for older heatsink models that do not yet support AM4 will also be provided to customers at no additional cost.

"We have offered free-of-charge mounting upgrade kits to our customers ever since AMD introduced AM2 in 2006, and we're proudly continuing this tradition with the upcoming Ryzen 7000 series processors and their new AM5 socket", says Roland Mossig (Noctua CEO). "While all our current multi-socket coolers already support AM5 out of the box and don't require any updates, customers will be able to upgrade the NH-L9a as well as most older coolers at no additional cost, so even 15-year-old coolers can be used on the latest processors!"

Thermalright Intros HR-09 2280 Pro, a Humongous M.2 SSD Heatsink

We saw such a contraption taking shape for a while now, as M.2 NVMe SSD transfer-rates increase, and controller thermal-throttling begin to significantly impact performance. The new HR-09 2280 Pro by Thermalright is a humongous heatsink designed for SSDs in the M.2-2280 form-factor. Its design involves a nickel-plated copper base-plate, from which two 6 mm heat pipes convey heat through an aluminium fin-stack that's 74 mm tall. 24 mm wide, and 86 mm in length; weighing 90 g. The heatsink does not appear to have latches for fans, nor are any fan-clips included; but one can improvise clips for a 60 mm fan. The company developed a smaller version of this, called simply the HR-09 2280. This one uses a single 6 mm-thick heat-pipe, and its fin-stack is just 48 mm tall; with a total weight of 80 g. The company didn't reveal pricing.

SilverStone Intros TP06 PlayStation 5 M.2 NVMe SSD Heatsink and Cover

SilverStone today introduced the TP06, an M.2 NVMe SSD heatsink and cover for the PlayStation 5 system. The heatsink is designed for SSDs in the M.2-2280 form-factor that lack heatsinks, and is shaped to double up as a cover for the M.2 NVMe drive bay of the PlayStation 5. The heatsink is a 67.5 gram chunk of aluminium with a solid surface making contact with the drive, and ridges on the other side that dissipate heat. Besides the heatsink, the package includes a thermal pad, screws tested for compatibility with the PS5, and a screwdriver. The company didn't reveal pricing.

Samsung 980 PRO SSD Finally Gets a Stock Heatsink Option

Samsung's flagship client M.2 NVMe SSD, the 980 PRO, finally has a stock heatsink in new SKUs. Its design calls for what appears to be an aluminium monoblock with ridges for fins that join at the top. This heatsink is held in place by a metal shroud that covers the sides and back of the drive. The drive comes with its own retail SKUs and name—"980 PRO with Heatsink," much like how Western Digital segregates SKUs with or without heatsinks for its flagship WD Black SN850 drives. Retail channel availability of these variants remains to be seen, as The Verge reports that these drives will be sold as PlayStation 5-compatible drives. When they come out on October 29, the 1 TB variant is expected to be priced at $250, with the 2 TB variant going for $450.

Noctua Readies High-Performance Fanless Heatsink Building on 2019 Prototype

Noctua is reportedly working on a high-performance fanless CPU cooler building on a 2019 prototype that was exhibited at last year's Computex. The final product should launch within 2020, according to an Overclock3D report. As of now there's no word on whether the said cooler will look identical to last year's prototype, but it provides a long list of capabilities that Noctua could build on. For starters, last year's prototype was capable of handling 120 W TDP in PC cases with good natural ventilation, and up to 180 W in cases with quiet fans. The company used a Core i9-9900K in a variety of workloads as a proof of the heatsink's capabilities. The prototype heatsink was also shown offering decent amount of clearance with the motherboard's memory- and VRM areas. Its only downside was the 1.5 kg weight.

Intel Recalls Boxed Xeon E-2274G Processors Due to Inadequate Stock Cooler Effectiveness

Intel issued a product change notification (PCN) dated November 13, calling for a recall of boxed Xeon E-2274G processors from customers and distributors. The boxed SKU of the E-2274G, which includes a stock cooling solution, has been marked as "discontinued" and "end of life." Intel is offering an E-2274G tray processor (chip-only) as replacement for the returned inventory. The cause for the recall is the cooling solution included in the boxed SKU, which has been found to be insufficient to cool the E-2274G, a 4-core/8-thread processor based on the 14 nm++ "Coffee Lake" microarchitecture, with a rated TDP of 88 W.

The E973708-003 fan-heatsink included with boxed Xeon E-2274G processors is supplied by Foxconn, and has been known to be bundled with Intel's entry-level client-segment processors, such as the Pentium Gold series and Core i3 series (chips with TDP typically rated 65 W or less). It features a thin, circular, all-aluminium heatsink, which lacks a copper core that certain other LGA115x-compatible stock coolers by Intel have. The heatsink makes contact with the CPU over pre-applied TIM on an aluminium surface, with spirally-projecting fins dissipating heat under the fan's airflow. It could be been an oversight bundling such an underpowered cooler with an 88 W TDP processor that's designed for the rigors of mission-critical use-cases such as workstations and small-business servers.

Streacom Outs the UM2 Universal CPU Mount for its Fanless Heatsink Cases

Fanless mini-PC case maker Streacom introduced the UM2 Universal CPU Mount accessory, which lets you use the company's FC5, FC8, FC9 and FC10 cases with some of the newer CPU socket types. Streacom specializes in cases in which the body panels double up as a passive heatsink to cool the CPU, with a base and heatsinks transferring heat to the panels. The UM2 Universal CPU Mount uses oval shaped metal arms that you can orient across square (LGA115x), rectangular (AM4), or even trapezoid socket mount hole patterns, future-proofing these cases. The UM2 replaces the stock upper-mount your case comes with, hence its name. Streacom hasn't revealed pricing or availability.

Noctua Presents New Chromax Line Fan and Heatsink Accessories

Noctua today presented new fan and heatsink accessories as part of its chromax line that allows colour-configuring Noctua products in order to coordinate them with individual build colour schemes. Complementing the existing NA-SAVP1 anti-vibration pads in black, blue, green, red, white and yellow, the new NA-SAVP1 chromax.grey anti-vibration pads are a perfect fit for the light and dark grey colour scheme of Noctua's 140 and 120mm redux line fans. The new NA-HC5 chromax.black.swap, NA-HC6 chromax.black and NA-HC6 chromax.white are add-on heatsink covers for the popular NH-U14S, NH-U14S TR4-SP3 and NH-U14S DX-3647 CPU coolers.

"We've seen an overwhelming customer response to our chromax line that allows users to customise the visual design of their heatsinks and fans in order to create unique, individual builds that impress with subtle, classy colour accents rather than overblown lighting effects," says Roland Mossig (Noctua CEO). "With the new pads and heatsink covers, we're expanding our offer, giving customers even more possibilities for colour-coordinating their fans and enabling NH-U14S users to customise their coolers."

Thermalright HR-22 Plus Black Heatsink Pictured

Thermaltake is ready with an all-black version of the HR-22 Plus CPU heatsink. This monstrosity, pictured next to a 350 ml soda can for scale, can handle processors with up to 65 W TDP without needing a fan, and over 200 W with up to two 120 mm fans mounted in push-pull fashion. The black variant features anodized aluminium fins and nickel-plated copper fins. The fin-stack consists of 35 large indented and punched fins through which eight 6 mm-thick copper heat pipes pass, which indirectly pull heat from a nickel-plated copper base. Measuring 150 mm x 120 mm x 159 mm (LxWxH), the heatsink alone weighs 1.12 kg. The company didn't reveal pricing or availability, but apparently this variant is available in China.

EK co-develops a heatsink for the Intel Optane 905P M.2 SSD

EK Water Blocks, the premium computer cooling gear manufacturer, is releasing a passive heatsink for the M.2 version of the Intel Optane 905P NVMe SSD. The passive heatsink ensures lower operating temperatures which expands the lifespan and improves the sustained performance of the drive. It ensures that the Intel Optane 905P NVMe SSD operates at its maximum possible performance by preventing thermal throttling during heavy workload cycles.

The 905P Intel Optane Drive uses around 9.35 W of power under load, which is challenging to dissipate without a dedicated cooling solution like the EK-M.2 Intel Optane Heatsink. The cooling performance of this solution by EK is achieved via thermal pads that transfer heat to the aluminum heatsink that is finned for a larger dissipation area. The design of the heatsink ensures that it is easy to install, it is low profile, easily reusable and aesthetically not intrusive.
