AMD Readies Socket AM5 EPYC 4004 Series Server Processors

AMD is readying a new line of EPYC branded server processors in the Socket AM5 package, VideoCardz reports. The new processor lineup is being built to target two distinct classes of customers—small business servers, and data-centers selling small-size dedicated servers that were otherwise having to offer Ryzen chips. Intel currently has the Xeon E-2400 series "Raptor Lake-E" processors in the Socket LGA1700 package to target these exact kinds of customers. The EPYC 4004 series will be based on the same "Raphael" package as the Ryzen 7000 series, and will be a step up from the Ryzen PRO 7000 series. What sets the Ryzen PRO 7000 apart from the EPYC 4004 series are the target markets. The Ryzen PRO series target commercial desktops. Perhaps the biggest differentiator between EPYC 4004 and Ryzen PRO 7000 series is the support and warranty AMD provides to its server processors.

The "Raphael" package gives the EPYC 4004 series CPU core counts ranging between 6 and 16. These CPU cores are based on the "Zen 4" microarchitecture. The memory controllers in the I/O die will probably be reconfigured to support server memory densities, besides ECC support like on the Ryzen PRO 7000 series. There's even talk of variants with 3D V-cache, although it remains to be seen if the 12-core and 16-core variants are similar to the 7900X3D and 7950X3D, where only one of the two CCDs has 3D V-cache; or if they're the chip we all dreamed about—a "Raphael" with both CCDs featuring 3D V-cache. There are already Socket AM5 motherboards by companies such as Advantech, which are server-grade, with server-relevant I/O, like the one pictured below, and so the ecosystem for EPYC 4004 series already exists, along with upgrade headroom for future generations.

ASRock Begins Rolling Out AGESA 1.1.0.0 Firmware with Phoenix APU Support

ASRock began rolling out UEFI firmware updates for its Socket AM5 motherboards that encapsulate AMD AGESA 1.1.0.0 ComboAM5PI microcode. This would be the second release of AGESA to support AMD's upcoming Ryzen 7000G "Phoenix" and "Phoenix 2" desktop APUs that the company reportedly plans to launch later this year. The AGESA 1.1.0.0 microcode comes with the SMU version 76.72.0 for "Phoenix" and "Phoenix 2," and continues with version 84.79.223 for "Raphael" and "Raphael-X" processors.

Unlike several past generations of Ryzen branded desktop APUs that only had 2-3 processor models in the retail channel, AMD is reportedly planning a slightly bigger lineup of APUs for the Socket AM5 platform, consisting of Ryzen 3, Ryzen 5, and possibly Ryzen 7 processor models, and their Ryzen PRO variants. The Ryzen 3 and Ryzen 5 models are expected to be based on the "Phoenix 2" silicon that has a combination of two "Zen 4" and four "Zen 4c" CPU cores and an iGPU with 4 compute units; while it is rumored that at least one Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 processor model will be built on "Phoenix," which has up to eight "Zen 4" cores, and a large iGPU with up to 12 compute units. So far we haven't seen reports of AMD bringing Ryzen AI to the desktop platform.

AMD Reports Second Quarter 2023 Financial Results, Revenue Down 18% YoY

AMD today announced revenue for the second quarter of 2023 of $5.4 billion, gross margin of 46%, operating loss of $20 million, net income of $27 million and diluted earnings per share of $0.02. On a non-GAAP basis, gross margin was 50%, operating income was $1.1 billion, net income was $948 million and diluted earnings per share was $0.58.

"We delivered strong results in the second quarter as 4th Gen EPYC and Ryzen 7000 processors ramped significantly," said AMD Chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su. "Our AI engagements increased by more than seven times in the quarter as multiple customers initiated or expanded programs supporting future deployments of Instinct accelerators at scale. We made strong progress meeting key hardware and software milestones to address the growing customer pull for our data center AI solutions and are on-track to launch and ramp production of MI300 accelerators in the fourth quarter."

AMD Announces Ryzen PRO 7040 Series "Zen 4" Processors for Commercial Notebooks

AMD today announced its Ryzen PRO 7040 line of processors for the all-important commercial notebook segment. A commercial notebook is a class of notebook that are purchased in large quantities by businesses or government organizations, to be handed out to their employees. The key distinction from consumer notebooks is their in-built security and remote-management features that let the organization remotely handle user credentials, securely store company data, and remotely deploy software updates. Most importantly, the organization maintains ownership over the device and can remotely de-activate it at whim. This is a particularly important market segment for both AMD and Intel (which sells 13th Gen Core vPro processors). AMD's launch today includes Ryzen PRO 7040 series mobile processors for both the 15 W to 28 W ultraportable, and 35 W to 55 W thin-and-light (mainstream) commercial notebook form-factors.

At the heart of the Ryzen PRO 7040 series processors is the 4 nm "Phoenix" silicon, which combines the "Zen 4" microarchitecture for the CPU, with RDNA3 graphics architecture for the iGPU, and introduces the Ryzen AI on-die accelerator based on the Xilinx-designed XDNA architecture, to the commercial notebook segment. The silicon physically features an 8-core/16-thread "Zen 4" CPU, with several processor models boosting to the 5.00 GHz-mark. Each core has 1 MB of dedicated L2 cache, and the eight cores share a 16 MB L3 cache. The iGPU meets full DirectX 12 Ultimate logo requirements, and features 12 RDNA3 compute units, which work out to 768 dual issue-rate stream processors, 24 AI Accelerators (intrinsic to RDNA3 and not related to Ryzen AI); and 12 Ray Accelerators, besides 48 TMUs and industry-leading 32 ROPs. AMD is backing the iGPU on these processors with AMD Software PRO (the same class of drivers as Radeon PRO GPUs), which come with superior support from AMD, and special packages for remote deployment by organizations.

AMD Also Launches the Ryzen PRO 7000 AM5 Processors for Commercial Desktops

In addition to the Ryzen PRO 7045 series mobile processors for commercial notebooks, AMD announced the Ryzen PRO 7000 processors for commercial desktops. These are desktops deployed by medium-large businesses and enterprises in their offices, which remain connected to the enterprise network at all times, and require remote management and security features. This particular segment is addressed by Intel using its 13th Gen Core vPro processors. The Ryzen PRO 7000 processors are based on the Socket AM5 platform, which is ready for next-generation connectivity. AMD is also introducing a new motherboard chipset to go with these processors, although they are compatible with consumer AMD 600-series chipset motherboards.

The Ryzen PRO 7000 series processor models being launched today are based on the "Raphael" MCM, which depending on the model, comes with one or two 5 nm "Zen 4" CCDs, and a 6 nm I/O die. What makes these processors especially formidable compared to past attempts by AMD at commercial desktop processors, is that while the previous-generation chips were based on monolithic APU dies for their integrated graphics; these chips are based on the full-featured MCM for this generation, with integrated graphics as standard. AMD's decision to make integrated graphics standard should prove particularly helpful for adoption in the commercial desktop space.

HP Launches New Laptops and Accessories for Hybrid Work

Today at the Amplify Partner Conference, HP Inc. announced new products and solutions to usher in the next era of hybrid work for everyone with a comprehensive set of computing solutions for hybrid flexibility. With only 22 percent of workers describing themselves as 'thriving' in hybrid work, it's clear companies are still figuring out how to make hybrid work. "Most companies want to move past the 'forced return' to the office era of hybrid work," said Alex Cho, President of Personal Systems, HP Inc. "The challenge is, they're not sure how to. AMD Readies a Handful New Ryzen PRO 5000 Desktop Processor SKUs

AMD is readying a handful new Ryzen PRO 5000 series desktop processor models, according to a leaked Lenovo datasheet for commercial desktops. These Socket AM4 processors are based on either the 7 nm "Renoir" monolithic silicon with "Zen 2" CPU cores; or the "Vermeer" MCM with "Zen 3" cores; all feature 65 W TDP, and the AMD PRO feature-set that rivals Intel vPro, including a framework for remote management, AMD PRO Security, PRO Manageability, and PRO Business (a priority tech-support channel).

Models in the lineup include the Ryzen 3 PRO 4350G, a "Renoir" based APU with a 4-core/8-thread "Zen 2" CPU clocked up to 4.00 GHz, and Radeon Vega 6 integrated graphics. The Ryzen 5 PRO 5645 is based on "Vermeer," and is a 6-core/12-thread "Zen 3" processor with 32 MB of L3 cache, and up to 4.60 GHz clock speeds. The Ryzen 7 PRO 5845 is the 8-core/16-thread model in the lineup, clocked up to 4.60 GHz. Leading the pack is the Ryzen 9 5945, a 12-core/24-thread chip clocked up to 4.70 GHz. From the looks of it, these processors will be exclusively available in the OEM channel, but AMD's OEM-only chips inevitably end up in the retail channel where they're sold loose from trays.

AMD Announces New Ultrathin Notebook Design Wins, New "Mendocino" Mobile Processor

AMD in its Computex 2022 presentation announced several design wins for its Ryzen 6000U line of high-performance processors for ultra-thin notebooks. With configurable TDPs of 15 W and 28 W, these processors feature an 8-core/16-thread "Zen 3" CPU, an iGPU with up to 12 RDNA2 compute units, and a modern I/O that combines DDR5 memory with PCI-Express Gen 4, to bring gaming to ultra-thin form-factors without the need for a discrete GPU. The iGPU meets DirectX 12 Ultimate feature requirements, and AMD leverages technologies such as FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), to further improve gaming performance.

Among the new design wins are the ASUS Zenbook S 13 OLED, a 13-inch ultra-thin weighing only 1 kg, and capable of average 60 FPS in "Godfall," taking advantage of FSR. The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro X is another notebook in this class capable of 1080p gaming, powered by the Ryzen 7 6800HS, with up to 122 FPS in CS:GO, up to 266 FPS in "League of Legends," up to 59 FPS in "Shadow of the Tomb Raider," up to 64 FPS in "Final Fantasy: XIV," and up to 46 FPS in "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided."

AMD and Qualcomm Collaborate to Optimize FastConnect Connectivity Solutions for AMD Ryzen Processors

AMD and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, today announced a collaboration to optimize the Qualcomm FastConnect connectivity system for AMD Ryzen processor-based computing platforms, starting with AMD Ryzen PRO 6000 Series processors and the Qualcomm FastConnect 6900. With the FastConnect 6900 system, the latest AMD Ryzen processor-powered business laptops feature Wi-Fi 6 and 6E connectivity, including advanced wireless capabilities enabled with Windows 11.

In collaboration with Microsoft, next-generation Windows 11 PCs, such as the Lenovo ThinkPad Z Series and HP EliteBook 805 Series, can harness the full potential of Windows 11 Wi-Fi Dual Station through Qualcomm 4-Stream Dual Band Simultaneous. Multiple Wi-Fi bands outperform traditional single band connections for improved video conferencing experiences, reduced latency, and enhanced connection robustness. Leveraging the 6 GHz band, next-gen laptop users can take full advantage of its bandwidth and speed improvements without competing with any non-6E devices.

AMD Announces Ryzen 6000 PRO Series of Notebook Processors

AMD has unveiled a host of new laptop processors under its Ryzen PRO branding for corporate notebooks, although this time around, AMD has also tagged on an extra "50" to the model number. As such, the top of the range models are the Ryzen 9 Pro 6950H/HS, which appears to be more or less identical to the Ryzen 9 6900HX/HS. There's also a Ryzen 7 and 5 version in the H-series, as well as a Ryzen 7 and 5 in the U-series. In addition to these models, AMD also announced three new Ryzen PRO 5000 U-series models, which end up with the 75 suffix compared to the 25 suffix of the consumer models. These last three CPUs are based on the Zen 3 rather than the Zen 3+ architecture, just as with the consumer models.

AMD claims in excess of 26 hours of battery life from the Ryzen 7 PRO 6850U fitted inside an HP EliteBook 865 G9 with a 76 Wh battery pack. HP and Lenovo appear to be the launch partners for the new PRO series CPUs and HP will offer three different 800-series SKUs with the 6000-series processors and three other notebook series with the 5000-series processors. Lenovo on the other hand has its new Thinkpad Z13 and Z16 notebooks as AMD Ryzen 6000 PRO series exclusive models, as well as the four different Thinkpad models that will come with the same series of CPUs, plus several other models based on the 5000 series CPUs.

AMD RZ608 Wi-Fi 6E WLAN Module Real, Debuts on AYANEO Handheld Consoles

AMD in 2020 set out on an ambitious project to develop Wi-Fi modules under its own marquee. This was catalyzed in part by the company's Ryzen PRO line of mobile processors, to better compete with Intel's Core vPro processors, which included Intel's own vPro-ready WLAN modules as part of a package to notebook OEMs. Come 2021, and AMD's module is ready, and is debuting with a handheld game console.

The new AMD RZ608 WLAN module is cutting-edge, in supporting Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax over 6 GHz) in addition to a plethora of older Wi-Fi standards; and Bluetooth 5.2. 6 months seem like an awfully short amount of time for AMD to whip up a WLAN product portfolio from scratch, especially with the IP tangles involved. The company instead chose to partner with MediaTek, which has access to all the IP needed to develop such a product. The WLAN PHY appears to be a MediaTek design, specifically based on the MT7921K chip. We'll hear a lot more about the RZ608, as it might start showing up in notebooks powered by Ryzen 5000 "Cezanne" processors. It remains to be seen if the chip makes it to desktop platforms, too.

Possible AMD Ryzen PRO 4000G Series SEP Prices Surface, Incompatible with 400-series Chipset

AMD's recent announcement of its Ryzen 4000G and Ryzen PRO 4000G series desktop processors lacked a key detail - pricing, possibly because it's irrelevant to end users as the processors are sold only in the OEM channel. momomo_us secured a slide (possibly by AMD's channel marketing), which puts out SEP (suggestive) pricing per chip in n-unit tray quantities. Apparently, the Ryzen 7 PRO 4750G, and its energy-efficient -GE variant, are priced at USD $309. The Ryzen 5 PRO 4650G/GE comes with a $209 price, and the Ryzen 3 PRO 4350G/GE at $149.

Prices of the other parts in this slide appear to be stuck at their respective launch-time SEP pricing, since all of the price-cuts AMD implemented appear to be unofficial, and specific to retailers and regions. AMD also updated its familiar-looking processor-to-chipset compatibility slide with the inclusion of the new 4000G series. Apparently the new processors only work with AMD 500-series chipsets, such as the B550, X570, and the commercial-segment exclusive PRO565 chipset. This is strange since "Renoir" is now confirmed to lack PCIe gen 4.0, and only spares gen 3.0 x8 for PEG, which means 400-series chipsets are excluded due to ROM size limitations to squeeze in AGESA microcode supporting several generations of processors and microarchitectures. Interestingly, AMD assured customers of Ryzen 4000-series compatibility with 400-series chipsets. Perhaps they were only referring to the "Zen 3" based "Vermeer" processors, as the slide shows.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3995WX to Debut with a Lenovo Workstation

AMD's 64-core HEDT processor with an 8-channel memory interface, the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3995WX, could debut in a Lenovo-branded workstation. Lenovo's Workstations division recently tweeted a big workstation announcement for 14th July, 2020, the same day AMD is expected to announce the 3995WX. "A new Lenovo workstation is coming soon, and we aren't going to just change the game. We plan to change the rules," the tweet reads. This is also a major hint as to the availability of the 3995WX. It won't surprise us if the processor will be an OEM-exclusive (if not a Lenovo-exclusive). The Threadripper PRO 3995WX, in addition to the Ryzen PRO feature-set, reportedly features an 8-channel DDR4 memory interface, doubling the memory bandwidth over that of the current retail-channel flagship 3990X.

AMD Readies PRO565 Desktop Chipset

AMD is readying the PRO565 desktop motherboard chipset. Mention of the chipset surfaced in screenshots of the latest AMD CBS (common BIOS settings) lists of an ASRock motherboard, unearthed by Komachi Ensaka. Not much else is known about the AMD PRO 565. We expect it to be the key component of a business platform rivaling the Intel Q470, enabling several large business-relevant management features. AMD is making efforts to rival Intel vPro, as seen with its Ryzen 4000 Pro series mobile processors targeted at commercial notebooks with quasi-enterprise features. AMD's current crop of Ryzen PRO processors features GuardMI.
