ASUS today announced the Republic of Gamers (ROG) XG Station 2 external graphics enclosure. A successor to the pioneering XG Station by the company, which launched way back in 2007, this box has the connectivity to drive high-end graphics cards, and expand connectivity of your machine. The enclosure features a PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slot, and two 6+2 pin PCIe power connectors, with which it can supply the card with up to 500W of power. Its power supply can further provide up to 100W of power to recharge your notebook. The internal power supply meets 80 Plus Gold efficiency rating.

The ROG XG Station 2 connects to your notebook or desktop using Thunderbolt 3 (40 Gbps). It uses this bandwidth to drive not just the graphics card, but also a gigabit Ethernet controller, and a 4-port USB 3.0 hub. You can supplement the main Thunderbolt connection's bandwidth with an additional USB 3.0 (5 Gbps) connection to your host machine. This isn't necessary, but ASUS claims it will improve performance. The enclosure opens up at a vertical seam like an oyster, letting you easily install your graphics card. The walls of the enclosure are perforated, but a trio of 70 mm fans actively ventilate it. The enclosure also features RGB LED lighting, which can be managed using ASUS Aura software. ASUS plans to sell the ROG XG Station 2 from Q1-2017.

Intel is preparing to launch its next-generation NUC (next unit of computing) compact desktops between 2016-17. A leaked company roadmap and slides revealed that the line of NUCs based on the company's higher-performance 7th generation Core processors could be codenamed "Baby Canyon," and the one based on its low-power Celeron processors could be codenamed "Arches Canyon." The company is readying five "Baby Canyon" NUCs under the NUC7 series, and two models under the NUC6C series.

The NUC7 series are driven by 14 nm Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 "Kaby Lake" dual-core processors, with support for dual-channel DDR4 SO-DIMM memory, and a unique USB type-C connector that routes 10 Gb/s USB 3.1, 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3, and DisplayPort 1.2. The platform's second USB 3.1 port is a front-facing type-A. The NUC6C series, on the other hand, is focused on legacy connectivity, and features an analog VGA port, besides HDMI 2.0, and a pair of USB 3.1 ports. The NUC6C series could make its debut within 2016, with the NUC7 following up in 2017.

ASUS unveiled a Republic of Gamers branded XG2 external graphics enclosure, which uses bandwidth from two USB 3.1 ports to power not just a high-end graphics card, but also additional connectivity such as a pair of USB 3.0 type-A ports, and gigabit Ethernet. One source tells us that the USB 3.1 ports are bi-directional, and can be used to increase bandwidth to the enclosure. A single Thunderbolt 3 port provides the same amount of bandwidth, but is known to post higher latencies due to protocol layer.

PowerColor showed off its external graphics enclosure for AMD Radeon graphics cards that take advantage of AMD XConnect technology, the DevilBox. This is more than a graphics enclosure. It plugs into the host machine over a 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 3 connection, and puts out not just a PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slot for a wide range of graphics cards, but also provides a SATA 6 Gb/s port for a 2.5-inch internal drive bay, two USB 3.1 ports (one each of type-A and type-C), four USB 3.0, and a wired gigabit Ethernet connection. Powering it all is an internal 500W power supply. You can drop in any high-end, air-cooled graphics card, including the Radeon R9 Fury, and the GeForce GTX TITAN X. Topping it all off is RGB internal lighting. Why not.

Positioned in the company's "mainline" brand, the board is built in the ATX form-factor, and draws power from a combination of 24-pin ATX and 8-pin EPS power connectors. The CPU socket is wired to eight DDR4 DIMM slots, supporting up to 128 GB of quad-channel DDR4 memory; and four PCI-Express 3.0 x16 connectors (x16/NC/x16/NC or x16/NC/x8/x8 or x8/x8/x8/x8, depending on how they're populated, on CPUs with full-featured PCIe root-complexes).
