Slimbook Spain has presented its "KDE Slimbook V" model to the public—the company has collaborated with KDE, an international free software community. The latter's Plasma 6 open-source desktop environment is due to launch next week (according to Phoronix), so it is encouraging to see partner hardware appear beforehand. The Spanish tech company specializes in Linux-loaded laptops and notebooks—their "KDE V" collaborative variant seems to be an offshoot of an already released Slimbook Excalibur model, bearing a full "refined" aluminium chassis. The KDE Slimbook V is hyped as offering: "outstanding Performance—slender laptop that packs a punch. A Slimbook Manjaro gaming-oriented laptop was revealed last week—again, this seems to be another rejigged model. An earlier "Hero" version shares the same spec sheet; notable parts include an Intel Core i7-13620H CPU and NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 4060 Mobile GPU. The Slimbook and Manjaro partnership provides an almost Valve Steam Deck-esque user experience, albeit in non-handheld form—with support for Steam, Heroic Games Launcher, ProtonUp-QT, OBS, and Lutris platforms. New, Exciting AI Capabilities With the Galaxy Book4 Series
The new Galaxy Book4 Series was spotlighted near the entrance of the zone. Attendees could experience the strong AI performance and the incredibly responsive touchscreen display of the Galaxy Book4, released on January 4 in Korea. The Galaxy Book4 series is equipped with the new Intel Core Ultra Processor, offering expanded connectivity and a high-performance AI experience. The zone featured up-close demonstrations of the laptop's increased processing power, made possible by a newly-added Neural Processing Unit (NPU).

ASUS today announced the RT-AX57 Go tri-mode travel router, a dual-band model that offers ultra-fast WiFi 6 up to 3,000 Mbps. It provides tri-mode connectivity for travel, work and home, including 4G and 5G mobile tethering, public WiFi mode (WISP), router mode, subscription-free security and multiple VPN features. With support for 160 MHz WiFi channels, RT-AX57 Go can also support up to 70 devices, four times the capacity of previous models.

Frequent travelers often face situations where no WiFi is available. The RT-AX57 Go can provide an easy and secure connection through the mobile hotspot feature that can share WiFi with multiple devices. Travelers may also experience a limit on the number of devices that can connect to hotel or airport WiFi, and expensive connection fees. Bluetti shows us a unique new portable power solution in its 2024 International CES booth, and it has to do with space-saving, hot-swappable batteries. The AC180T packs two slots, each holding a 716 Wh solid-state battery. The battery has a grab-handle on top, and can be swapped out during operation. The grab handle has a basic LED-based charge state read-out. This solution saves you from having to lug a second enclosed battery expansion pack. Rather just carry several of these battery modules, and swap them out as needed. The AC180T delivers 1.8 kVA over four AC connectors, a number of USB-C and USB-A power delivery ports; and a 120 W DC car port. The unit supports fast-charging over an AC power source, but also takes in DC solar. The AC240 lacks battery hot-swapping, but features a single enclosed 1536 Wh battery, and can deliver 2.4 kVA. The AC240 has its claim to fame being IP65 water resistance, and concealed connectors.

Anker and its constellation of lifestyle consumer electronics brands brought in a trove of new gear to the 2024 International CES. There's a lot to cover, and we begin with Nebula, a brand focused on portable audio and projectors. The Capsule 3 is a 6-inch tall cylindrical "pocket cinema" projector that's slightly larger than a portable speaker (it encloses one, too). Besides an 8 W Dolby Digital speaker set, it included a 52 Wh battery that can offer around 2.5 hours of playtime on battery power. It takes in USB-PD, and has a type-C USB port for power. The Capsule 3 throws a 200 ANSI Lumens beam as a DLP, with its lamp rated for 30,000 hours. The projector's resolution is Full HD (1080p), and is suitable for short-range projections (within 6 ft), with automatic keystone correction. Display inputs include HDMI, and playback from USB mass-storage devices. On the software side of things, the Capsule 3 packs Google TV, so all apps from the Play Store should work here.

Next up, we have the larger Nebula Mars 3 Air, a picnic basket-sized projector with a grab handle. This may be a Full HD DLP just like thew Capsule 3, but with double the brightness, of 400 ANSI Lumens, the same 8 W Dolby Digital speakers, and a 64.8 Wh battery for up to 2.5 hours of playback (more if you reduce the brightness). The higher brightness means that you can project onto larger screens, around the 80-inch to 100-inch range, from a distance of roughly 8 ft. The connectivity options and software loadout is exactly the same as the one on the Capsule 3. Available for pre-order, the Capsule 3 is priced at $549, and the Mars 3 Air at $599.

DigiTimes Asia has picked up on some intriguing insider information—their source claims that Apple could be pivoting hardware development in the direction of lower-cost portable personal computer solutions. Their current "budget-friendly" champ is the M1 SoC-equipped MacBook Air (of 2020 vintage), starting at $999 for mortals—education incentives can lower that entry price down to $899. The gigantic American multinational technology company debuted a 15‑inch MacBook Air M2 model this year, but sales figures have allegedly not met projected targets. The DigiTimes report indicates that Apple engineers are preparing new hardware for a different market segment—education was mentioned earlier—Google and its partners remain dominant here with cost effective Chromebooks.

Apple's iPad family offers some "wallet friendly" alternatives for students, but industry experts note that ChromeOS-based laptops are easier to use for educational tasks and iPads: "cannot compete with Chromebooks on price." An all-new lower tier MacBook lineup—sitting below their Air range—is supposedly already in development, with a launch window projected for the second half of 2024 (lead time is said to be around nine months). A more competitive retail price is achievable due to the use of "cheaper material for the laptop's metal outer shell, and cheaper mechanical components."

Over the past few months there have been reports of issues with SanDisk portable SSDs and Western Digital released a firmware update in May that was meant to prevent the drives from "unexpectedly disconnect from a computer". However, it appears that this firmware update didn't solve the problem and Western Digital is now being taken to court over drives not just having disconnect issues, but also randomly failing. The court case is expected to become a class action suit, as the plaintiff claims that the issue of failing drives affect tens, if not hundreds of thousands of people in the USA.

The models included in the complaint includes the SanDisk Extreme Pro, Extreme Portable, Extreme Pro Portable and WD My Passport SSD. A further firmware update was released in July, which is said to have made the issues even worse, with data being lost on drives or being inaccessible to drive owners. In some cases the drives go into read only mode, but sometimes this means that the drives become inaccessible to the OS, which in turn also means dataloss to the user. Time will tell how this plays out, but it's not looking great for Western Digital, but it wouldn't be the first time a storage device maker has been taken to court over failing products.
