Thermal pad thickness on laptop

Hi everyone,

I changed the factory thermal pads with Arctic ATP2560.
It is an HP Pavilion Gaming 15 laptop and since I bought it I have had a lot of problems with Thermal Throttling and Power limit.
I changed the thermal paste but there was no progress. I decided to change thermal pads and paste.
I replaced everything, but again without undervolt I can't reach normal temperatures under intense load. I came across a topic where it is about the same laptop, more precisely the same specifications but with 15C less...

Am I doing something wrong or is the problem in the heatsink?
Incorrect thickness of thermal pads leads to uneven temperature...

Has anyone changed the thermal pads on this laptop or know the thickness because I can't find them in the HP manuals or on the internet??
Laptop model: HP Pavilion Gaming 15 - dk0016nm

In the attachment I leave you pictures before and after the replacement, so tell me if it's okay...

Thanks in advance !

Hi,
Think you had the best look at the thicknesses
Coverage matters to
I prefer large sheets and cutting them my self so I know they cover everything completely

Some of the originals weren't fully covering some chips
Using precut thermal pads it's easier to place the pads on the chips first "leave the plastic on"
Then align the cooler "remove the plastic on the cooler side of the pads" and press down so they stick to the cooler
Then gently remove the cooler then firmly press the pads onto the cooler and remove the plastic and you're done.

Are Arctic thermal pads harder than original ones, I mean not soft enough?
The coverage of the thermal pads is marked on the heatsink.
The factory ones were slightly smaller because I sent the laptop twice for service and they did a disastrous job.
I used larger dimensions than the one attached.
I'll will show you with an example...

I bought thermal pads of different thicknesses, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mm
I didn't use 0.5 at all because I think they are too thin.
But I noticed how the original pads are pressed into the chips unlike the Arctic, could this mean they don't have enough contact at all or?
And yes, when I was assembling the heatsink, I found out that the protective plates do not fit very easily. As if the heatsink was lifted, all the screws were tightened to the maximum.

I just wouldn't do any maintenance when tipsy though...

Hi,
Sure try 0.5 and a little dab of thermal paste.

Contacted the HP support for the exact thickness of the thermal pads.
They say they don't have it in the manuals, so they will have to ask the engineers...

U should check the thickness of the original pads. Then buy quality thermalpad and thermalgrease. Sometimes it helps to use 0,5-1mm coppercoldplates + thermalgrease as 1mm pads.
Iam sure, with the right products, u will be successfull.

What do you think about instead of using pads, just using thermal paste in the place where the pads were, is that crazy? or it could work

Only thermal pads in term of longevity are the best.

Thermal Grizzly for sure are the top tier.

Hi,
Yeah they are not cheap though
Clay is best but can be unforgiving if you have to reopen stuff you can get tears...

Hello, some months later, why using 2 diferents thickness pads instead just using 1.00 mm? Have differents measurements in the heat sink?

What was the thickness of original pads? I will appreciate some help
