MAXSUN Adds RTX 4090 GPU to its Flagship MegaGamer Lineup

Chinese board partner Maxsun introduced its flagship—Mega Gamer GPU (MGG)—GeForce RTX 40-series lineup earlier this year, debuting with an RTX 4070 Ti card, and then an RTX 4080 MGG OC 16G model. The rather unique looking cooling solution attracted some attention at the time—a traditional set of three 100 mm fans was augmented with two additional 40 mm "Air Burst" units in a flanking position, acting as exhausts as for the finstack. Earlier today Maxsun revealed the range topping RTX 4090 MGG OC 24G model via a video uploaded to their Weibo channel.

The new headliner looks to be fitted with the same shroud design as seen on the already released RTX 4080 MGG OC 16G model, which includes a somewhat gimmicky magnetically detachable large top-facing RGB LED panel, dubbed "MGG LED Ambient Kit." Thankfully Maxsun has put the work into creating a robust cooling solution, with a vapor chamber capable of meting out 7000 mm² of heat dissipation. Their GeForce RTX 4090 MGG OC 24G model's TDP has been rated at 450 W TDP, with a factory overclock providing a 2580 MHz boost clock. As reported by VideoCardz, Maxsun seems to be sticking to a Chinese market launch for the moment—the company's international AliExpress store has not been updated with a listing for the range topping Mega Gamer GPU.

Minisforum PC Features Ryzen 9 7945HX3D and External GPU Interface

During its "Xiamen HighFun" event in China, Minisforum announced the latest addition to its compact series of gaming PCs, this time with no official name. The 6-liter system, code-named "Project RPFXI" for Intel and "Project DRFXI" for AMD, will support up to 100 W TDP and utilize the most powerful Ryzen CPU, the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D. This hybrid mobile/desktop processor combines the desktop-level performance of 16 Zen 4 cores with 144 MB of 3D V-cache, all within a 55 W power limit. Minisforum confirmed the 7945HX3D would be available in the AMD platform version, positioned as a premium model compared to the existing 7945HX system.

Interestingly, the GPU support is literally external, as the potential GPU needs to be attached to the outside part of the case, which is then secured using screws. The case could accommodate the fastest GPUs like NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 with a powerful enough power supply. The 6-liter mini PC is expected to launch in late 2023, either in 24-core Intel (HX line) configuration, of 16-core AMD configuration.

Atlas Fallen Optimization Fail: Gain 50% Additional Performance by Turning off the E-cores

Action RPG "Atlas Fallen" joins a long line of RPGs this Summer for you to grind into—Baldur's Gate 3, Diablo 4, and Starfield. We've been testing the game for our GPU performance article, and found something interesting—the game isn't optimized for Intel Hybrid processors, such as the Core i9-13900K "Raptor Lake" in our bench. The game scales across all CPU cores—which is normally a good thing—until we realize that not only does it saturate all of the 8 P-cores, but also the 16 E-cores. It ends up with under 80 FPS in busy gameplay at 1080p with a GeForce RTX 4090. Performance is "restored" only when the E-cores are disabled.

Normally, when a game saturates all of the E-cores, we don't interpret it as the game being "aware" of E-cores, but rather "unaware" of them. An ideal Hybrid-aware game should saturate the P-cores for its main workload, and use the E-cores for errands such as processing the audio stack (DSPs from the game), network stack (the game's unique multiplayer network component), physics, in-flight decompression of assets from the disk, etc., which show up in Task Manager as intermittent, irregular load. "Atlas Fallen" appears to be using the E-cores for its main worker threads, and this is found imposing a performance penalty as we found out by disabling the E-cores. This performance penalty is because the E-cores run slower than P-cores, at lower clock speeds, have much lower IPC, and are cache-starved. Frame data being processed by the P-cores end up having to wait for those from the E-cores, which causes the overall framerate to come down.

ASUS Republic of Gamers Announces ROG Strix SCAR 17 X3D, the World's First AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D Laptop

ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) today announced the new ROG Strix SCAR 17 X3D, the perfect fusion of cutting-edge silicon and ROG engineering. Featuring the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D mobile processor equipped with AMD 3D V-Cache technology for the very first time, the Strix SCAR 17 X3D takes performance to a whole new level. By doubling the L3 cache of the mighty Ryzen 9 7945HX processor, the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D gives users a boost in games that are hungry for this onboard ultrafast memory. Paired with a 240 Hz QHD display, Conductonaut Extreme liquid metal on the GPU, and a vapor chamber, the Strix SCAR 17 X3D is ready to dominate the leaderboards.

Making great processors even better
While the original 2023 ROG Strix SCAR 17 came equipped with AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors, the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D is truly in a league of its own. It leverages the power of AMD 3D V-Cache technology, a stacking of extra ultra-high-speed L3 cache vertically on top of one of the two core compute dies (CCD). This extra cache enables the eight cores to perform certain calculations quickly and efficiently, notably in gaming. For situations where increasing CPU frequency simply doesn't show significant performance gains, 3D V-Cache technology holds the potential to unlock extra compute power.

NVIDIA Cancels GeForce RTX 4090 Ti, Next-Gen Flagship to Feature 512-bit Memory Bus

NVIDIA has reportedly shelved plans in the short term to release the rumored GeForce RTX 4090 Ti flagship graphics card, according to Kopite7kimi, a reliable source with NVIDIA leaks. This card had been extensively leaked over the past few months as featuring a cinder block-like 4-slot thickness, and a unique PCB that's along the plane of the motherboard, rather than perpendicular to it. From the looks of it, sales and competition in the high-end/halo segment are too slow, the current RTX 4090 remains the fastest graphics card you can buy, and the company seems unfazed by the alleged Radeon RX 7950 series, given that AMD has already maxed out the "Navi 31" silicon, and there are only so many things the red team can try, to beat the RTX 4090.

That said, the company is reportedly planning more SKUs based on the AD103 and AD106 silicon. The AD103 powers the GeForce RTX 4080, which nearly maxes it out. The AD104 has been maxed out by the RTX 4070 Ti, and there could be a gap between the RTX 4070 Ti and the RTX 4080 that AMD could try to exploit by competitively pricing its RX 7900 series, and certain upcoming SKUs. This creates scope for new SKUs based on cut-down AD103 and the GPU's 256-bit memory bus. The AD106 is nearly maxed out with the RTX 4060 Ti, however there's still room to unlock its last remaining TPC, use faster GDDR6X memory, and attempt to slim the vast gap between the RTX 4060 Ti and the RTX 4070.

3DStor Listing Outs MSI GeForce RTX 4090 Custom Blower Card

PC hardware enthusiast, harukaze5719, has stumbled upon a very understated looking custom GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card. MSI has produced a two-unit wide blower-type cooling system for the current flagship NVIDIA 40-series GPU, with Chinese PC hardware retailer—3DStor.com—being the only semi-official source of information. MSI's own web presences have not been updated to include their new GeForce RTX 4090 Aero S 24G model. The e-retailer does not provide any pricing information, but several examples (more than ten) are available to purchase via mujitech3's Ebay store. The Ningbo-based seller is charging a cool $3065 per card, plus an additional $80.00 for international shipping.

According to 3dstor's listing, the relatively compact custom design sticks to NVIDIA's recommended reference specifications (boost clock reaching 2520 MHz), but a 350 W TGP looks to be a bit iffy (coupled with the board's 16-pin 12VHPWR connector)—Tom's Hardware observed that this: "is 100 W lower when compared to regular RTX 4090 AIBs. We must assume that this is a typo and that its TGP is the same as other RTX 4090 graphics cards, which are currently the best graphics cards for gaming. Meanwhile, when the board peaks at 450 W, its blower-based cooling system likely gets extremely loud." The low-key monolithic shroud design suggests that MSI is likely targeting professional types with its Aero S 24G model, although gamers eyeing a compact build will be well catered to...if they can spare the expense.

NVIDIA Now Ships GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition with Updated Power Connector

A few weeks ago, we reported that NVIDIA is already shipping its GeForce RTX 4070 Founders Edition cards with an improved 12VHPWR connector called 12V-2x6. However, today we learn that NVIDIA is also now shipping GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition with an improved 12V-2x6 connector. Thanks to the Reddit user u/prackprackprack posting in r/NVIDIA, the user reported that his Founders Edition RTX 4090 has shortened sensing pins on the connector. If not adequately plugged in, the sensing pins will not allow the card to draw full power and melt the connector. Besides RTX 4070 FE, the RTX 4090 FE is now updated as well, which makes sense as it is the most power-hungry card in the family. However, this may be a partial 12V-2x6 implementation. Below, you can see images showing shortened sensing pins.

Splave's ASUS ROG MATRIX RTX 4090 Cracks 4 GHz GPU Clock Barrier

An ASUS ROG MATRIX GeForce RTX 4090 overclocked by Splave became the first graphics card to break the 4 GHz GPU clock barrier. The card was overclocked to a blistering 4005 MHz GPU clock while leaving the memory untouched at 21 Gbps. The card was GPU Pi stable, and went on to set the single GPU record of 45.402 seconds. The ROG MATRIX was cooled using a liquid nitrogen evaporator, while the Core i9-13900K powering the rig was on AIO liquid CPU cooling. The CPU was left at stock frequency, and the memory ticked at vanilla DDR5-4800. The HWBOT validation of the feat can be accessed here.

GIGABYTE RTX 4090 WindForce V2 Unveiled, with Unique Tail-ended Power Connector

GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4090 WindForce V2 may not be the company's most premium RTX 4090 custom-design graphics card, but it has arguably the best power connector design. Almost every custom RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 comes with a design where in the PCB is half or two-thirds the length of the card, and the remainder of the length is dedicated to the cooling solution, where the heatsink can extend along the thickness of the card. In case of the RTX 4090 WindForce V2, this extended portion of the cooler is recessed by half, exposing the tail end of the PCB. The 16-pin 12VHPWR power input is pointed toward the tail-end, rather than toward the top of the card.

This makes cabling very convenient, as it no longer needs to bend nearly 180° as it emerges from the back of your motherboard tray. The power cable goes straight into the connector with no bending up to a roughly 8 cm length, before making a 90° turn to the back of your motherboard tray, reducing mechanical strain on the connector. Even the NVIDIA-designed adapter included with the card (the one that converts 4x 8-pin to a 12VHPWR), should look neater. It's likely that as a WindForce-series product, this card offers the lowest tier of factory overclocks by GIGABYTE. You still get dual-BIOS, which lets you toggle between this factory-OC, and a Silent BIOS that runs the card at reference speeds, with tighter fan tuning. The selling point, however, is its unique power connector design.

Watercool Unveils Heatkiller V Pro Water Block for NVIDIA RTX 4090 STRIX/TUF

With the HEATKILLER V Pro for ASUS RTX 4090 STRIX and TUF, WATERCOOL proudly presents its latest cooler generation suitable for the GeForce RTX 4090 High-End models from ASUS. For this purpose, the cooler has been redesigned from scratch and features a modular high-performance base plate as a special "highlight," which massively increases the cooling performance once again.

In addition, the cooler uses approved technologies like the dual layer inflow and symmetrically designed cooling channels. To keep the hot GDDR6X memory in control, special high-performance thermal pads are included in the scope of delivery. The HEATKILLER V Pro for ASUS RTX 4090 STRIX and TUF will be available in the coming days from select retailers as well as directly from Watercool's online store, but with some waiting time.

ASUS ROG MATRIX GeForce RTX 4090 PCB Pictured

Here's the first picture of the bare PCB of the upcoming ASUS ROG MATRIX GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card, courtesy of der8auer, who was given access to the card as part of a G.Skill overclocking event. We spotted a fully assembled version of this card on the Computex floor earlier. The PCB is essentially of the same design as the ROG Strix RTX 4090, but with some major changes. The card draws power from a single 16-pin 12VHPWR connector, and we're hearing that the card's power limits will be the highest ever allowed by NVIDIA for any custom RTX 4090, perhaps even getting close to the 600 W continuous design limit of the connector.

The card features a 24-phase VRM for the GPU power phases, and a 4-phase VRM for the 24 GB of GDDR6X memory across a 384-bit memory interface. We cannot make out the exact DrMOS components for this VRM, but der8auer says these are 70 A-rated MPS-sourced DrMOS (the ROG Strix uses 70 A DrMOS sourced from OnSemi). Although one can't tell just by looking, ASUS says that it has deployed a network of SMD thermal sensors across the critical areas of the card, such as individual rows of memory chips, or DrMOS. This is essentially ASUS's inspiration of the late EVGA iCX. There is a physical dual-BIOS switch, some consolidated voltage measurement points, and some fan and lighting headers, but that's about it.

Leadtek Showcases NVIDIA GeForce WinFast RTX 40-series Hurricane Models at Computex 2023

Leadtek revealed its GeForce RTX 4060 Ti Hurricane custom graphics card at the tail end of last month. The latest refresh of the company's Hurricane cooling solution looked very space age with its curved central X-formation design. Leadtek has chosen to expand upon this aesthetic with bigger brother NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40-series cards shown off at Computex this week. The company's WinFast GPU lineup has grown with the additions of RTX 4090 Hurricane 24G, RTX 4080 Hurricane 16G, RTX 4070 Ti Hurricane 12G and RTX 4070 Hurricane 12G models.

All of these units sport metal backplates, but there are some differences in the makeup of attached cooling solutions. The RTX 4090 and 4080 models are cooled by a triple (100 m) fan array and eight heat pipes. The RTX 4070 Ti sports three "large" fans (size not specified) and six heat pipes. The RTX 4070 (non-Ti) makes do with only a pair of "large" fans, but has the same number of heat pipes (six) as its immediate sibling, albeit packed into a much shorter surround.

Schenker Brings New XMG PRO 16 Studio, Schenker VISION and Schenker WORK Base-series Laptops to Computex 2023

Schenker XMG also unveiled the new PRO 16 Studio workstation laptop at the Computex 2023 event, which will be equipped with an Intel Core i9-13900H CPU and up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070. In addition, the company is announcing the new WORK Base series and Vision-series laptops that are available under the Schenker brand, introducing new form-factors and bringing several other updates.

The new XMG Pro 16 Studio promises to be quite a versatile workstation laptop aimed at content creators, using a 16:10 aspect ratio screen, and packing some serious power with Intel's Core i9-13900H CPU and up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 graphics card, as well as two DDR5 slots with DDR5-5200 support, and Thunderbolt 4. The XMG Pro 16 Studio also comes with NVIDIA Studio certification. Schenker also showed the efficient vapor chamber cooling that will be used in the XMG Pro 16 Studio. It also brings several upgrades compared to the current XMG Focus 16 laptop, which it can be compared to, at least performance-wise, including an additional USB-C power delivery, a Windows Hello camera, 2.5 Gbit LAN, longer battery life, and a slimmer aluminium body. Schenker notes that the XMG PRO 16 Studio should be available in Europe in late July or early August.

FSP CUT592 is a Mid-tower with Easy Cable Management

At the 2023 Computex, FSP showed us their CUT592 ATX mid-tower case designed for easy cable routing. Its core design innovation sees the right-side wall of the bottom partition pushed to the edge, with openings into the crawl-space behind the motherboard tray, minimizing at least one tight bend from the PSU cables from pushing against the right side panel. Also, not the entire motherboard tray has a crawl space, it's been recessed toward the front portion such that two 120 mm fans fit in there (from a 240 mm AIO), better utilizing that space. The case has been extensively tested with custom-design GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards to ensure clearance. The top- and front panels of the case each support 360 mm radiators. The front panel can be switched between a finer mesh and a coarser one. Front panel connectivity includes a 10 Gbps-capable USB 3.2 type-C port, besides type-A.

Akasa's Cypher X133 is a Premium Custom Chassis for Intel's NUC 13 Extreme

Akasa might be the most well known third party housing manufacturer for Intel's NUC series of devices, most of which offer passive cooling and full aluminium construction. At Computex, Akasa was showing off its Cypher X133 which the company has been selling to system integrators for some time already, but there hasn't been a public announcement. The reason for keeping this product on the low is because it's using a low profile, server grade liquid cooling solution which takes some skill to install in the compact chassis. That said, the entire internals slide out on rails, which should make most parts much easier to access than in a typical chassis this size.

Even though it's a compact chassis, it can house an NVIDIA RTX 4090 graphics card, in addition to the NUC 13 Extreme, which is no small feat. That said, the width limit sits at 3.9 slots for the GPU, so some custom models with wider coolers might not work. The chassis is very much a premium product with a very nice finish that is easily comparable to high-end notebooks. Hopefully Akasa will figure out a way to make a more DIY friendly version of this chassis, although it's possible that the price tag will be too high for this to make sense as a DIY build.

ASUS Announces ROG MATRIX RTX 4090 Flagship Graphics Card

ASUS at the 2023 Computex launched the ROG MATRIX GeForce RTX 4090, its absolute top-end custom-design graphics card, designed to be the fastest money can buy. The card features the industry's highest factory-overclock for an RTX 4090, and has its power limits set squarely at 600 W, maxing out the single 16-pin 12VHPWR connector. The card also features the strongest VRM solution ever by ASUS for a graphics card, to hold this PL. The star attraction with this card is that it is marketed as the first graphics card that incorporates liquid metal technology.

What it essentially means, is that the cooling solution uses liquid-metal thermal interface material (TIM) for the GPU. The enthusiasts among you know how difficult it is to apply and maintain liquid metal, and ASUS is among the first companies to do this on an industrial scale, using a fully automated process. The company originally designed this mechanized liquid-metal TIM application technique for its high-end notebooks, but figured it could use it even for graphics cards. Liquid-metal TIMs offer the highest possible thermal conductivity as the TIM is pure metal. It's also electrically conductive, which is why application and maintenance is extremely difficult. ASUS innovated a cold-plate design specifically for this task, so the graphics card could survive international shipping from its factories. A third innovation by ASUS has been to develop a special multi-layer resin that protects the SMD components on the PCB against being shorted by the liquid-metal. ASUS is so confident in its liquid-metal technology, that the company is backing this graphics card with a comprehensive 5-year warranty.

ASUS Shows Concept GeForce RTX 4070 Without Power Connector

At its Computex 2023 showcase and ASUS HQ tour for the press, the company has unveiled a new ASUS ROG concept graphics card based on the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 design, that actually has no standard power connectors, but draws power from the motherboard via a proprietary slot.

As noted, the graphics card is still in its concept phase, and actually draws power from a special PCIe like slot connector at the bottom of the graphics card. Of course, this also means that it will need a special motherboard, which ASUS had on display as well. The motherboard is based on a Z790 TUF Gaming motherboard, with a design that had all the connectors at the back of the motherboard. In addition to the standard power and other connectors like SATA ports, it also includes three 8-pin PCIe and single 12VHPWR connector, which are meant to power the graphics card. Of course, such motherboard also requires a special PC case that have cut-outs for those connectors.
