NVIDIA Ada AD102 Block Diagram and New Architectural Features Detailed

At the heart of the GeForce RTX 4090 is the gigantic AD102 silicon, which we broadly detailed in an older article. Built on the 4 nm silicon fabrication process, this chip measures 608 mm² in die-area, and crams in 76.3 billion transistors. We now have our first look into the silicon-level block diagram of the AD102, including the introduction of several new components.

The AD102 features a PCI-Express 4.0 x16 host interface, and a 384-bit GDDR6X memory interface. The Gigathread Engine acts as a the main resource allocation component of the silicon. Ada introduces the Optical Flow Accelerator, a component crucial for DLSS 3 to generate entire frames without involving the graphics rendering machinery. The chip features double the number of media-encoding hardware engines as "Ampere," including hardware-accelerated AV1 encode/decode. Multiple accelerators mean that multiple streams of videos can be transcoded (helpful in a media production environment), or transcoding is performed at twice the FPS rate (each encoder takes turns at encoding a single frame).

NVIDIA Details GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition Cooler & PCB Design, new Power Spike Management

NVIDIA detailed the design of its GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition graphics card in a briefing with us today.
While the new Founders Edition looks very similar to the RTX 3090 Ti Founders Edition, NVIDIA says it has made several changes to its design. The metal outer frame now comes with a more pronounced gunmetal tinge. The heatsink array underneath has been redesigned to improve airflow between the two fans.

Jensen Confirms: NVLink Support in Ada Lovelace is Gone

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang in a call with the press today confirmed that Ada loses the NVLink connector. This marks the end of any possibility of explicit multi-GPU, and marks the complete demise of SLI (over a separate physical interface). Jensen stated that the reason behind removing the NVLink connector was because they needed the I/O for "something else," and decided against spending the resources to wire out an NVLink interface. NVIDIA's engineers also wanted to make the most out of the silicon area at their disposal to "cram in as much AI processing as we could". Jen-Hsun continued with "and also, because Ada is based on Gen 5, PCIe Gen 5, we now have the ability to do peer-to-peer cross-Gen 5 that's sufficiently fast that it was a better tradeoff". We reached out to NVIDIA to confirm and their answer is:
NVIDIAAda does not support PCIe Gen 5, but the Gen 5 power connector is included.

PCIe Gen 4 provides plenty of bandwidth for graphics usages today, so we felt it wasn't necessary to implement Gen 5 for this generation of graphics cards. The large framebuffers and large L2 caches of Ada GPUs also reduce utilization of the PCIe interface.

The Toughpower GF3 series is fully modular and designed with a native 12+4 pin PCIe Gen 5 connector compatible with Intel's ATX 3.0 specifications, allowing users to run the latest RTX 40 series natively. Aside from that, the PCIe Gen 5.0 connector enables you to pump up to 600 W of power through a single 12+4 cable, which is very impressive. The Toughpower GF3 series's components have also been upgraded this time to meet ATX 3.0 standards, guaranteeing up to 70% efficiency at 2% load (60% efficiency at 2% load for the 1650 W model) and complies with power supply timing standards, ensuring the smoothest operation even when your system is running at full load. Speaking of build quality, it is the one thing we place the greatest emphasis on. Packed with 100% high-quality 105 °C Japanese capacitors, the GF3 series is made extremely durable and more stable than ever before. On top of that, the built-in Smart Zero Fan makes zero noise when running under 30% load to reduce audible noise. Yet, you can still have the fan running at all times simply via a physical switch.

NVIDIA RTX 4090 Doesn't Max-Out AD102, Ample Room Left for Future RTX 4090 Ti

The AD102 silicon on which NVIDIA's new flagship graphics card, the GeForce RTX 4090, is based, is a marvel of semiconductor engineering. Built on the 4 nm EUV (TSMC 4N) silicon fabrication process, the chip has a gargantuan transistor-count of 76.3 billion, a nearly 170% increase over the previous GA102, and a die-size of 608 mm², which is in fact smaller than the 628 mm² die-area of the GA102. This is thanks to TSMC 4N offering nearly thrice the transistor-density of the Samsung 8LPP node on which the GA102 is based.

The AD102 physically features 18,432 CUDA cores, 568 fourth-generation Tensor cores, and 142 third-generation RT cores. The streaming multiprocessors (SM) come with special components that enable the Shader Execution Reordering optimization, which has a significant performance impact on both raster- and ray traced graphics rendering performance. The silicon supports up to 24 GB of GDDR6X or up to 48 GB of GDDR6+ECC memory (the latter will be seen in the RTX Ada professional-visualization card), across a 384-bit wide memory bus. There are 568 TMUs, and a mammoth 192 ROPs on the silicon.

ICYMI, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 12GB Uses 192-bit Memory Bus

Amid the fog of rapid announcements and AIC graphics card launches, this little, interesting detail might have missed you, but the new GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB graphics card announced yesterday; features a memory bus-width of just 192-bit, which is half that of the RTX 3080 12 GB (384-bit). The card uses 21 Gbps GDDR6X memory, which at 192-bit bus-width, works out to just 504 GB/s bandwidth. In comparison, the RTX 3080 12 GB uses 19 Gbps GDDR6X memory, which at 384-bit bus width, produces 912 GB/s. In fact, even the original RTX 3080 with 10 GB of GDDR6X memory across a 320-bit bus, has 760 GB/s on tap.

The bigger RTX 4080 16 GB variant uses 256-bit memory bus, but faster 23 Gbps GDDR6X memory, producing 736 GB/s of memory bandwidth, which again, is less than that of the original 10 GB RTX 3080. It's only the RTX 4090 that has an unchanged amount of memory bandwidth over the previous generation—1008 GB/s, which is identical to that of the RTX 3090 Ti, and a tad higher than the 936 GB/s of the RTX 3090 (non-Ti). Of course, memory bandwidth is no way to compare the RTX 40-series from its predecessors, there are a dozen other factors that weigh into performance, and what matters is you're getting generationally more memory amounts with the RTX 4080-series. The RTX 4080 12 GB offers 20% more memory than the RTX 3080, and the RTX 4080 16 GB offers 33% more than the RTX 3080 12 GB. NVIDIA tends to deliver significant performance gains with each new generation, and we expect this to hold up.

NVIDIA today unveiled the GeForce RTX 40 Series of GPUs, designed to deliver revolutionary performance for gamers and creators, led by its new flagship, the RTX 4090 GPU, with up to 4x the performance of its predecessor. The world's first GPUs based on the new NVIDIA Ada Lovelace architecture, the RTX 40 Series delivers massive generational leaps in performance and efficiency, and represents a new era of real-time ray tracing and neural rendering, which uses AI to generate pixels.

"The age of RTX ray tracing and neural rendering is in full steam, and our new Ada Lovelace architecture takes it to the next level," said Jensen Huang, NVIDIA's founder and CEO, at the GeForce Beyond: Special Broadcast at GTC. "Ada provides a quantum leap for gamers and paves the way for creators of fully simulated worlds. With up to 4x the performance of the previous generation, Ada is setting a new standard for the industry," he said.

NVIDIA Project Beyond GTC Keynote Address: Expect the Expected (RTX 4090)

NVIDIA just kicked off the GTC Autumn 2022 Keynote address that culminates in Project Beyond, the company's launch vehicle for its next-generation GeForce RTX 40-series graphics cards based on the "Ada" architecture. These are expected to nearly double the performance over the present generation, ushering in a new era of photo-real graphics as we inch closer to the metaverse. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang is expected to take center-stage to launch these cards.

15:00 UTC: The show is on the road.

Later today, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang will take centerstage at GTC to launch the next-generation GeForce RTX 40-series "Ada" graphics cards, in what is expected to be a pre-recorded stream, which may have been filmed earlier. This has been leaked, and we have our first picture of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition graphics card. Its design retains the dual-axial flow-through concept introduced with the RTX 30-series Founders Edition cards, where a fan on one side of the card draws in cooler air, passes it through the heatsink, and exhausts with the help of a second fan. There appear to be some refinements to the design of the fan-impellers, The card itself is 3 slots thick, much like the RTX 3090 Ti Founders Edition. The RTX 4080, positioned a notch below this card, was pictured earlier in its anti-static sleeve, and appears to feature an identical board design.

GALAX RTX 4090 "Ada" Custom Design Leaked

Here's the first look at what is possibly a premium custom-design GeForce RTX 4090 "Ada" graphics card by GALAX, a design the company will also sell under the KFA2 brand in select markets. The 4-slot monstrosity features not just three large fans where you'd expect them, but a fourth one at the backplate, arranged in a push-pull configuration with the third fan. This fan protrudes a whole 1 slot above the backplate, and could potentially cause clearance issues with memory slots on some motherboards. The entire topside and front of the card is laced with acrylic ARGB diffusers. The card pulls power from a single 12+4 pin 12VHPWR connector.

NVIDIA Confirms GeForce "Ada" Launch tied to "Project Beyond," Drops a Sneaky Phone Number

NVIDIA has been dropping a trail of breadcrumbs in its GeForce twitter feed over the past week surrounding "Project Beyond," which from the get go was interpreted as its debut of the GeForce RTX 40-series, based on the "Ada" graphics architecture (named after Ada Lovelace, credited with being the mother of computer programming). In its latest tweet, the company posted a picture of the famous "Diagram for the computation by the Engine," believed to be a computer program she wrote for the Charles Babbage number engine (an analog computer from the early 19th century).

The teaser video shows a copy of Lovelace's chart lying on a modern PC desk. One of the two monitors has a sticky note with a phone number scribbled on it—(208)-629-7538. Punters on social media decoded this not to be a random phone number, but a well-crafted hint about the vital specs of the top GeForce RTX 4090. "208" could denote 2.08 times the performance (or at least FP32 compute throughput) of the RTX 3090 "Ampere." 629 could be the die-size in mm², and 7538 could mean 75.38 billion transistors (the rumored transistor count of the 5 nm "AD102" silicon on which the RTX 4090 is based).

Possible Custom NVIDIA RTX 4090 Cooler Features 13 Heatpipes

With a typical graphics power (TGP) of 450 W, and power limit of 600 W, the upcoming NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 will be one hot GPU if not cooled really well. We don't expect a single 2-slot air-cooled RTX 4090, and even 3-slot could be close-to-reference, leaving 4-slot to be the standard (at least every custom RTX 4090 leak we've come across points to a 4-slot design). Twitter user "wxnod," behind spectacular leaks of ZOTAC and GIGABYTE graphics card boxes, is back with pictures of what is possibly the cooling solution of a custom-design RTX 4090 (or RTX 4080). The cooler features multiple aluminium fin-stacks skewered by as many as thirteen 6 mm-thick copper heat pipes. These pipes don't make contact with the GPU, but rather a copper vapor-chamber that serves as a base-plate for the GPU, and possibly memory chips surrounding it.

NVIDIA RTX 4080 12GB and 16GB Based on Different Chips, Vastly Different Shader Counts

When we first got news about NVIDIA's upcoming GeForce RTX 4080 "Ada" coming in 12 GB and 16 GB variants, we knew there was more setting the two apart than just memory size and memory bus-width. Turns out there's a lot more. According to detailed specifications leaked to the web, while the 16 GB variant of the RTX 4080 is based on the same AD103, the second largest chip after the AD102; the 12 GB RTX 4080 is based on the smaller AD104 chip which has a physically narrower memory bus.

It looks like NVIDIA is debuting the RTX 40-series with at least three models—RTX 4090 24 GB, RTX 4080 16 GB, and RTX 4080 12 GB. The RTX 4090 is the top-dog part, with the ASIC code "AD102-300-xx." It's endowed with 16,384 CUDA cores, a boost frequency of up to 2.52 GHz, 24 GB of 21 Gbps GDDR6X memory, and a typical graphics power (TGP) of 450 W, which is "configurable" up to 600 W. The RTX 4080 16 GB is based on the AD103-300-xx" comes with 9,728 CUDA cores, a boost frequency of 2.50 GHz, and 16 GB of 23 Gbps GDDR6X memory across a narrower memory bus than the one the RTX 4090 comes with. This card reportedly has a 340 W TGP configurable up to 516 W.
