Doom 3 Source Code About To Be Made Public

Fans of 2004's hit horror sci-fi shooter Doom 3, are about to receive a nice gift courtesy of its creator, John Carmack. He's putting the source code out there for anyone to have, as he tweeted here:
doom 3 source is packaged and tested, we are waiting on final lawyer clearance for release.
This should see some excellent spin-offs and mods from the talented modding crews out there. For those that just want to play the game and not mess around with compiling it first from the source code, it's now available very cheaply from most games outlets.

I wonder if the source code package is going to contain all of the art assets too?
(Models, textures, audio, etc.)
Doesn't really matter to me, I just want to see the HLSL files if they are in there. :rockout:

This is great news for indie devs out there and the mod community! :toast: Very good free alternative over buying the Unreal Engine dev pack for nice graphics.

They're releasing it as a way to get the community involved. It's their older engine, which means that by releasing the code they will get people interested without damaging their sales.

The cynic says it's a vie for getting people used to their older older engine, so they will go for the newer engine when they're looking to license something professionally.

The positive side says this is a great hand-out to support the community. You decide how you view it.

Probably not. Source code for games means graphics engine itself with everything that comes with it to make other games (you still have to make new models and textures or code custom shaders). It doesn't mean all the data source that was used for Doom 3 game...

Its odd I found Doom 3 very boring compared to the others, N this engine is really dated actually. Lets see who will use it and make a better game than doom 3 ever was?

that's interesting. I experienced quite the opposite

I found it to be one of the most engaging games I have ever played. this game scared the shit out of me more than any other games I have played including every game from the FEAR and Dead Space series or any other for that matter

the storyline was pretty good and the gameplay was good for its' time

I wouldnt consider this an alternative to the unreal engine. As developers license the unreal engine so they can sell their games and epic offers support for the unreal engine and updates it, fixes bugs etc. The doom 3 engine is offered for free but you cannot create a game based off it and sell. Its against the terms of services ID will be releasing it under and also id wont be providing any support for this.

But other than that great news! love doom 3. Still play it today.

Is there anything that still runs on doom 3, bit late can not even remember what doom 3 looked like.
Doom and Quake now that was fun games 3000 years ago (pc years).

Maybe this is good then it can be used to run on a mobile phone web browser or as mobile phone screen saver, would definitely make standing over at the airport more fun using a Android phone.

It's other game developers that stand to gain with this. They can design their engines along the lines of idTech4.

If it makes COD4 Map Pack 4 COD MW4 look any better, why not.
