Apple MacBook Pro With OLED Display On-Track for Late-2026 Launch

A fresh report from the reliable publication "The Elec" has revealed that the OLED panel destined for the 2026 MacBook Pro is already in the prototyping stage at Samsung Displays. The report adds that the company expects to produce somewhere between three and five million OLED panels yearly, which can be expanded to up to 10 million if demand increases. The MacBook Pro lineup is also expected to boast 2 nm Apple M6-series SoCs in 2026, although details regarding the SoCs are unsurprisingly scarce as of this writing.

Interestingly, as we have already reported on before, the MacBook Air has once again been rumored to receive the OLED treatment no sooner than 2029. An upgraded LCD panel, however, is still on the cards for the entry-level laptop. The iPad Pro was updated with tandem OLED panels last year, although reports since have failed to indicate a substantial jump in demand. Whether the OLED MacBook lineup will meet a similar fate remains to be seen, although there is no denying that OLED panels will bring a plethora of improvements for MacBook Pro customers, especially those who happen to be creative pros.
Moreover, the 2026 MacBook Pro is also expected to witness a major design overhaul, with a priority on thinness, according to Mark Gurman's previous reports. The Cupertino giant's recent products have hinted at a renewed interest in slimmer designs, such as the iPad Pro, Apple Watch, and of course, the iPhone 17 Slim rumored to debut later this year. While this may disappointment folks who take thermals seriously, the improvements brought to the table by Apple Silicon are hard to deny, which may just be enough to allow Apple to introduce thinner designs for its MacBooks without sacrificing performance.

What I'm hyped for: more Tandem OLED across Apple's lineup, plus 2nm SoCs (the M5 series is supposed to be another enhancement of 3nm, though judging from M4, that might still be a substantial jump).
What I'm cautiously optimistic about: a thinner design for the MBP. I thought they'd learned their lesson from the Intel MBPs, but maybe 2nm will be enough to get it over the finish line in terms of thermal efficiency? We'll have to see about this one. Hopefully, they don't remove ports again on top of this, though Johny Ive isn't part of Apple anymore, so probably not.

lol I been using an OLED laptop for a year now, its great. Apple is slow as fk

and mine only costs $450, and can run loads of games at 120 fps on the 120hz screen. gg

Apple has never really been bleeding edge for that kind of stuff, they would rather wait and see with manufacturers if they can make something with the specs that they want, and how much it will cost them. Besides Asus, OLED panels are still scarce among windows laptops Mini LED or even plain IPS are still found among high-end laptops. OLED usually comes at a cost when it comes to battery life, my guess is that Apple wanted a panel that was very efficient, but still very good when it comes to colors/brightness

Apple also need to make sure it can scale to volume without supply hitches.

I would imagine any OLED Macbook Pro will sell any single Windows laptop line with an OLED screen by at least an order of magnitude, let alone a MacBook Air. Apple may only own ~10% of the world market for laptops but their cheapest model is a grand, I'd love to see what percentage of the world market for laptops for $1k and over they own, I bet it's over half and wouldn't be shocked if it's 75%

Both the technology itself and the supply chains behind it need to be very robust before they can use it.

I have an HP Spectre with an OLED screen and it is stunning, knocks spots off the LCD on my MacBook Air, it's just a shame Windows makes every laptop feel like a laggy, janky, infuriating POS with poor battery life.

Apple waits for the bugs to be worked out and technology to advance to a premium state before manufacturing. It's smart. They don't want to go through the keyboard issue again. OLED is on 4th gen panels now and there is some technology they will integrate in 2026 that will help even more (news.umich.edu/blue-pholeds-final-color-of-efficient-oleds-finally-viable-in-lighting/).

The sales of the OLED Ipads has been lower than anticipated and they shifted some OLED production to Iphones. I want to get a Macbook this year. It's too bad OLED is still so far away.

You'll get absolutely no disagreement from me on that!

As with copy & paste, when Apple waited until copying and pasting was no longer "confusing" to the customers. :D
