TechPowerUp and HIS Design Your HD 4890 Contest: Here Are The Winners!

Earlier this April, TechPowerUp and HIS announced the "Design Your HD 4890 Contest", to celebrate the launch of AMD's flagship Radeon HD 4890 graphics accelerator. The contest involved designing the accelerator's body graphics, an important ingredient in making the product. The winner receives a free Radeon HD 4890 accelerator with the winning design printed on the accelerator. The first and second runners up receive HIS Radeon HD 4850 IceQ4 512 MB, and HIS Radeon HD 4650 iSilence 512 MB respectively.

Nearly 60 days of contest time, and an overwhelming response of 314 entries later, a panel of 11 judges from HIS, AMD, and TechPowerUp selected the top three entries, along with a short list of noteworthy designs. Here are the winners:

First Place - Winning Design:

By mR Yellow

Second Place - First Runner Up:

By TagoVanTor

Third Place - Second Runner Up:

By fulloption

The judges were taken aback by the quality and quantity the contest produced. Says Simon Ng, product marketing engineer for AMD:
On behalf of AMD, I would like to thank everyone who participated in this TechPowerUp!/HIS/AMD design contest and offer our congratulations to the winners! It was not an easy process going through all the entries, especially since we went through each one in great detail and quite often we were torn between designs. Ultimately, we are very pleased with the total number of quality entries and would like to again thank everyone for your hard work and dedication.
TechPowerUp wishes to express invaluable gratitude too all the participants. We will return with even more exciting contests in the future.

The entire collection of entries can be viewed here.

No offense, but the judges have bad taste. I saw much better looking designs.

i thought the 2nd place winner was a good choice, the first place looks good for sure, but i felt there were better designs, less bland ones.

The winning design is great. But IMO there are other designs that I prefer.

One has to keep in mind who the judges are. How old they are, what kind of cars they like to drive, with or without those plastic skirt extenders, etc., how brave they are to choose something very novel rather than just an innocuous industrial/military design. TBH, it looks like some kind of "artists impression of what a futuristic tool/weapon" would look like from one of the cheaper 3D games.

PS. Great design however. Just not "brave" ;)

Well done to the winners. Not my choices, or tastes but what d'you lot care, I wasn't a judge. Well done to everyone that took part that actually read the rules! Wish I'd have had the time to enter - not to worry.

This should have been a referendum! Like TPU had in the old days.

Thanx guys. :toast:

As taste goes, it's personal preference. 11 judges in total, so i guess they got a wide scope of taste and view points.

Thanx to the ppl who gave positive comments and to those that didn't, well, tough luck.

Is so nice of them to say they carefully looked and considered each and every submission, even the crappy and horrible ones.

Funny how many people would of picked the 2ed place one over the first place winner.....

Just saying......IDK hard to see that one winning first place to me. There was 11 judges, and I bet the mass production with all the colors had some play in it.

think of the demographics. most of the judges were from AMD and HIS, so they're quite likely a lot older, and more conservative than we are. old people just dont like dragons as much as we do :D

(probably related to a hot video card having FIRE on its cooler too... hehe)

Well, from a graphic design point of view (i am a commercial graphic designer) the second one lacks branding. Nice artwork but not branded well enough.

Do us all a favour and post pics when your unique 4890 arrives! I wanna see how your concept looks in reality.

thats a VERY good point. that could have been what cost it first place - no HIS logo.

What the world "only" doing in your sentence? I didn't even make it as far as you, so be proud of yourself your design even was considered :toast:
