NOOOOO!!! :laugh::laugh:

Don't even let her know that it exists. Nothing turns people off quicker than having to type in commands like this is 1980 or something. ;)

Suse is point and click when you get it setup.

For email, web, and open office(just like real office in ways) there's no point in windows.

Basically what I'm getting her is:

GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-S2H $85
Athlon X2 5000+ $60
2 GB DDR2 800 Gskill or 2GB of Wintec AmpX $40-45
250GB Seagate Barracuda $60
whatever CD drive is cheap probably the one I have right now $20-25
wireless keyboard and mouse $30-40
HTPC case or slimline case w/PSU $60-70

Basically what she can't use:

Half the cores
1.5GB of RAM
USB2.0

And whatever more Win98 doesn't support besides that. That is assuming all the other hardware even works properly under 9x/me. Writing drivers for those OS's is quite a waste of time for most manufacturers.

ya...lol I guess my old copies of 98 and ME are to no use to anybody :p oh, I have a driver that gets USB 2.0 to work in Windows 98...

Guess she'll be stuck with Ubuntu for awhile. When my computer was too crappy to game, Ubuntu was perfectly fine for me and it is very simple, I'll just set it all up for her and put shortcuts to every folder she needs to use and not tell her about the terminal

Only problem is her old camera, it doesn't work in Ubuntu. What ones are supported in that? I'm guessing nearly all the Logitech ones are. I'm sure the same goes for wireless keyboards and mice.

I've not seen any driver that actually works flawlessly on Win98. It's like USB support in NT4. There are some half working solutions, though none that do any magic.

yeah I was browsing around because my sister had Windows98 for awhile and she couldn't use her MP3 player on it. I wound up finding this site with a driver for USB 2.0 for Win98. It worked fine, then she FINALLY found her ME CD, so we reinstalled that lol, now she's happy

Felt like such a newb installing it....haven't done DOS command reformatting in a long time.

fdisk

I forgot the colon when I was doing it...so I had to run home from my mom's and look it up
I just love it when the family calls...they always say "Tech support?" :D all the family's computers are either custom built by us or hand-me-down parts...my sister has my boyfriend's first system, minus the Geforce2 MX

Oh, you mean a web cam? Yeah, those are plug and pray, even with windows. :(

The only way I've ever got a webcam working with Linux was to buy a Dell N-series laptop, which had Ubuntu with a webcam preinstalled.
