ati 2400 pro ?

just a quick question! my mate's computer has a ati 2400 pro and i am unclear about how good it is! what would you guys say is the nvidia equivalent? an 8500gt maybe?

8500GT is probably generally slightly better. I think it's about an 8400GS or 7300GT.

Is your friend thinking of upgrading? Post his full specification and budget if you guys need help selecting a decent gaming card

It depends on the rest of his systems specification such as processor, ram, etc. But a 2400 pro would probably handle most DX 9.0 games at medium settings however these new DX 10.0 games like Crysis and Assassins Creed need alot more horsepower atleast a 3850. I think Crysis will play at 800x600 low settings!

to put it into perspective my old old 9250 almost beats 2400s in performance, certainly the memory bandwidth is the same, also my mobo's integrated graphics top it too.

i call BS on this one, a 9250 on par or EVEN beating a 2400pro is rubbish, you cant just go on memory bandwidth, its a whole new arcitecture and is about 3/4? years newer than the radeon 9250

its probably around the same perf (or lack of) as a 8400gs, pretty basic by todays standards although not as bad as a 9250 i believe the 2*** series had hdcp support didnt they ? so thats one plus as it would be ok in a media centre or for light (very light ) gaming, on some older games

Yeah I highly doubt that. Ive owned both cards and I must say the 2400pro is probably 10 times better.

im not gonna bother trying crysis unless it's playable @ 1024x768 cause he has a 32" tv and any lower would look sh!t. what about some less demanding games like cod4, assassins creed and r6 vegas2 medium @ 1366x768 (native)?

The 2400 Pro (512MB flavor) is in-between a 7300GT 512MB ddr2 and 7600GS 256MB ddr2. Your talking Crysis -1024x768 all low settings. In modern gaming, 75% of games @ 1024x768 on low-med settings. They are like an X1600 but with DX10 and better IQ.

Saved my dad from buying one though, he picked up a hd3450 instead, very happy!
*replaced a P4 EE 3.2 and 9600xt with a Q6600 and a HD3450*

Yeah th 2400pro isn't all that great and fairly old now a days. I'd say it's still pretty good for watching high definition movies, and some old games here and their.

It wasn't made for gaming either, it was made for multimedia. It's a very good card for dvd/ bluray playback and video encoding (or decoding, forget which one).

I'd certainly like to upgrade my gfx card though.

I wasn't really all that far out the 2400pro falls in between the 9550 and 9600 in benchmark charts and I said the 9250 was almost as good, well really it is.

No the 2400pro destroys a 9600....

What you are not adding in is the Sm3/Sm4, turn that off and you will see extremely different numbers.

Too bad any dx9 game that supports sm3 automatically uses it without modifications, so it doesn't matter what your settings are.

It's like a 9800pro out performs a x1300pro in Ghost Recon 2 until you go into the config files and disable HDR, then see what happens...

I have personally owned a 9200,9250,9600xt,9800pro,x1300pro,x1300xt,hd2400...

The hd2400 is WAY faster than a 9600xt, its faster than a 9800pro also.
You need to put it on equal grounds...

What you are saying is like trying to compare a 1950pro dx9 to a hd2600xt dx10 in crysis, they both perform about dead equal but once you drop the dx10 in the picture its a completely different story.

I've had a 2400pro and an 8500GT in the same computer. The 8500GT is better. No contest there. (Watch out for the newer "fake bios" 8500GTs, though.) The 2400pro also is not fast enough/barely fast enough to deinterlace 1080i mpeg2 video. Well, it can, but it can only do it with "bob" deinterlacing and has trouble with the better deinterlacing methods. It may be able to use the better deinterlacing methods if you disable the mpeg2 acceleration, but mine had problems doing that. Just an all-around frustrating card that almost-but-not-quite did an ok job.

I did play a little Hellgate: London at 1920x1080 with it. I could walk around and fight one guy at a time fairly decently....

8500GT is probably around a 6600GT. 2400pro is even weaker.
