Benchmark Scores 3m06: 20270 here: http://hwbot.org/user.do?userId=12313

that's quite impressive, TBH, I'm a tad shocked by how well they performed - wasn't expecting them to best a single 4870 by that kind of margin.

Isn't a "primary necessity?" That's a very subjective statement -- gaming is a primary necessity for my computer, and all I've got is a 4670. :D

Two 4830's in Crossfire would be incredible performance compared to just about any single GPU out there. Remember the reviews? When overclocked, the 4830 was equal to a 4850 -- it suffers very little from those missing stream processors. ;)

it depends I think on one's prefered style of game, as well as how cranked you like to have the IQ settings - I mean, if you play more RTS, then there isn't as much of a need for the sheer overkill of higher cards . . . but FPS, though, can be a different story.

Personally, I'm an advocate for multi-GPU setups. Once you get over that initial laodout min-stuttering, they're smooth as cream. Once you try two at one time, though, it's hard to go back to just one :toast:

I'll defi give you the fact that 4000 series OC to the next card, without a doubt. Even an OC 4850 is on par with a 4870. The whole 4000 series is an excellent offering from ATI, the likes of which we haven't seen since the 1900 series was released.

Hey, you're right -- the 4000 series is pretty amazing. I was actually proud of my 4670 -- plays Left 4 Dead (with max IQ) at 1280x1024, with no slow down, even with a bloody horde of zombies on my screen. And all for $70. :D

I guess another aspect to look at is the cost of developing the cards. I seem to recall that 4000 series being MUCH cheaper to produce than nvidia's offerings.

NIce to see AMD causing a little ruckus. Id also like ATI to drop there prices a tad too. While the 4870 is a terrific card, its not in my budget to get. Go down to the 189.99 price point, and we will be talking.

I just got a Crossfire mobo and was planning on a pair of 4830s to go with it...Nvidia is gonna have to cut pretty deep to beat that.

The 9800GT is already cheaper than the HD4830, and equal in performance. I would take a $94 9800GT over the HD4830, I have yet to see an HD4830 that cheap.

Hey, they're incredibly cheap, even more so if the price is dropped -- and two of them can beat a GTX 280 at most resolutions, I'm pretty sure. :D

That isn't really a huge feat, a pair of 9800GT's does pretty much the same.

Hopefully, we will see the 55nm parts start to hit the market soon. Higher clocks at the same price points would work nicely too.
Late december.

About time for Nvidia to realize it cant hold its prices at these high levels when the performance/price isnt at top. This is why ATI has had its latest succes to steal nvidias customers. I have both Nvidia and ATI cards, but I would like to exchange my old 8800gtx for a new gtx 280 or 260. But not at the current prices.

I usually see ATI's cards as more expensive down here.
I hope the prices are also cut in Australia, and not just the bigger countries. It'd be nice to get the card I'm looking at buying for less.

It'd be nice to know when they're planning on cutting their prices.

well you bought a lousy card that mine eats easily- gaming performance wise

but ya its usually Stores that Try to charge more on a certain product when its not AMDs fault for the pricing over seas, they can only have a MSRP just like Nvidia then its the Stores selling pricing. its known as Forced Marketing on Pricing, they want to Get as much money out of you or make the other card more enticing.

If you want to know my card look at my system specs.

Plays COD 4 Easily despite the CPU not being apart of the recommended system listing.

I say 4850 or 9800gt even maybe a 9800gtx/260

both cards should be around 100 when u come ready to buy, the other 2 maybe......
hmmm so you really think 4850's are going to drop by almost 50% by christmas, interesting

and gtx260 by 60%+ wow now that i would love to see :shadedshu

how is a voltmod and overclock going to use more than 512mb at 1280x1024 whereas at lower volts and clocks it wouldnt, that makes no sense what so ever

lowest dollar 4850 price on newegg right now.

AMD to Give RV770 a Refresh, G200b Counterattack Planned
http://www.techpowerup.com/75685/AMD_to_Give_RV770_a_Refresh_G200b_Counterattack_Planned.html

:)

and what ? you think the 4850 is going to drop to $100 by xmas, regardless of rv770, i can guarentee that wont happen. infact i tell you what if they do i will give you both of my 4850's straight up (legal note: this is just a rant on the tintanet and is by no means a binding contract, if these things do come about however unlikely, then the poster will have the option of eating his words rather than giving his 4850's away :D)

and not forgetting that is after rebate, damn i hate the price of hardware in the us, the 4850 hasnt dropped at all since its release and a new one will still set you back £115 ($180) we also dont have the luxury of having anything like mail in rebates, pisses me right off we pay over the odds for everything here and our currency is one of the best on the market :shadedshu

I think your going to owe me a set of 4850s:roll:

yes yes, we all know by now, ATI and AMD suck total ass and nVidia and Intel are goddly.

now that we got that out of the way.

I personaly see nvidia cutting prices as a good thing, specly since it will just lead to AMD/ATI price cuts as well, meaning that nomatter what brand/company you prefer your money goes farther.

Personaly I still see the 4800's as a better value then their nvidia equivlants, i have an 8800gts 512mb@ higher then 9800gtx clocks, Works great but wouldnt call it a "bang for the buck" card.

So by me not simply admitting that ATi is god, that makes me an nVidia/Intel fanboy? Only an ATi fanboy would see it that way.

I'm sorry, how about posting something a little bit constructive, or even trying to prove me wrong instead of just implying that I am a fanboy.

And how exactly do you see the HD4800's as better values than their nVidia equivalants?

Currently:
9800GT($95)=HD4830($99)
9800GTX+($139)>HD4850($129)
GTX260($190)=HD4870($215)

Performance Chart

The only card you might be able to try and say is a "better value" is the HD4870x2($479). But even then, overall it is only 5% better than the GTX280($359). That is what? Roughly a 30% price increase for 5% performance increase. Not exactly what I would call a "good value".

cuda and stream both look VERY promising, problem is that neither company seems willing to work with the other to make some kind of combine option to do this gpu based prosessing, so we the consumer are stuck trying to choose whats in the end going to be better OR finding a way to run 2 videocards in order to get broadist support base.

You mean like running a ATi card, and a Nvidia card for physx? I believe that there are threads here, and have been doing that for while now fud")

yeah, but not under vista, because ms blocks 2 video drivers.

so basickly we need to see them make a driver for the 2nd videocard(nvidia or ati) that runs as a PPU driver insted of video, at least till ms desides to unlock using 2 diffrent video cards in same rig.....

nvidia could make 8500/8600 chip based cards with no video out pci-e 1x based just for cuda use, should be plenty of power for games and most apps that would be gpu based.

as should ati for the havoc and other apps that are gpu based, maby a 4600 chip on the same kinda card.

Odd how you constantly try to imply that I have something against ATi/AMD simply because I pointed out that they aren't really better than nVidia, yet I have probably personally owned(as in I personally purchased them for my personal rigs) more ATi cards just in this year than you have in your entire life.

Though I have to admit, you really are making a convincing argument, you really are proving me wrong, with all your fact filled posts. I really loved how you informed everyone of ATi's "better value" by posting pricing and performance information... Oh wait, you didn't do that at all. Thats what I did, while you just continue to make useless posts trying make me look bad. Guess what, that only makes you look bad.

And no consumer should want AMD/ATi to go out of business, just like no consumer should want nVidia or Intel to go out of business. The lack of competition that would cause, would only mean we would be paying out the ass for parts.

Though I would really like you to show me where I said ATi/AMD are crap. It seems we are right back at the beginning, were I don't admit that ATi/AMD is the best, so that must mean I am saying they are crap(I don't even know where you are getting Intel from).

*coughfanboycough*

Anyway...

duno about the "nobody want amd/ati to go out of business" thing, i have seen plenty of posts here and on other forums like HardForum that think amd should just throw in the towl because thanks to core2/i7 amd are utter shit and useless to everybody.

Notice the word "should" in my post. Then look up the definition of "should" when used in the context I used it in.

and your posts come off to more then just me as implying ati is a bad buy, not just this thred, but others as well.

They only come off as bad to ATi fanboys. The fact of the matter is that I am right, and judging by the fact that you can't seem to actually make an attempt to disprove what I have said, I'm guess you already knew this. It isn't that I don't like ATi/AMD, I love them. However, I look at the facts and see that ATi cards aren't anything amazing. A lot of people seem to want to make it out like nVidia is in some world of hurt, and that ATi is doing so much better than nVidia right now. I simply don't see it that way. Unfortunately, this generally means I am responding to some idiotic ATi fanboy's claims that ATi is so much better than nVidia, and usually the idiotic fanboy then does nothing more than claim I am the fanboy. And just like you, they can never make any kind of valid argument to back up their point, so they usually just resort to trying to imply that I am anti-ATi or an nVidia fanboy.

I don't know why it is so hard to accept that ATi isn't so far ahead as people seem to want to you believe. I think proof enough is looking at W1z's last performance chart next to the last performance per $ chart. For every ATi card(with the exception of the HD4870x2) there is an nVidia card that is equal in performance, and in every instance that nVidia card offers a better Performance per $.

Though I'm sure next you'll try to say that W1z is just a fanboy too, and that W1z believes that ATi is shit and no one should buy their cards also. Because his charts pretty much say exactly what I have already said.

My posts are not meant to say that ATi cards are a bad buy. They contain the facts, you read them as you wish. My post, if anything, say that ATi isn't as good of a buy as everyone want to make it seem. The ones bias towards ATi tend twist that into me saying ATi is crap.

take a look at the news section(one level up from this thred) amd/ati have put out and are putting out more gpu accelerated apps then nvidia offers, sure nvidia offer physx, but the number of physx games is pretty low, and i have yet to see any app other then say windvd9 that uses purevideo for anything usefull.

cuda and stream both look VERY promising, problem is that neither company seems willing to work with the other to make some kind of combine option to do this gpu based prosessing, so we the consumer are stuck trying to choose whats in the end going to be better OR finding a way to run 2 videocards in order to get broadist support base.

ATi is not putting out more GPU accelerated apps than nVidia. Streams is simply allowing ATi to catch up with what CUDA has enabled nVidia to do. This definitely is a good thing. And the fact that you believe CUDA is only used for PhysX shows how little you know. Though again, most people are not buying either one because of their ability to accelerate a few applications, they are buying them for gaming, their main purpose. I certainly didn't buy any of my nVidia cards because of CUDA, and it doesn't play a role in any of my future buying decisions, nor with Streams.

*coughfanboycough*

Anyway...

But AMD sucks, you're absolutely correct in your observations good sir.

Oh cool, two links to Quak tests. Because that helps. Of course, looking at the other tests the performed kind of hinders your attempt...

um catch up......strange i use to FOLD on my x1900, when the 7800/7900 couldnt, and even when the 8800 couldnt.........so yeah ati is playing catchup........clearly your not a fanboi at all.

cuda(physx and folding only current readely avalable uses) is nice if you play physx games.

Stream(folding since the x1900) will be nice once havoc is updated to support it.

and power director still dosnt work (least by prof ver with latist update) with cuda, dispite it being the one thing they used to show what cuda can do for you.

and your correct, nvidia is the best, they are worlds ahead of ati in price, perf, quility and tech, why do ati even bother.
