NVIDIA Preparing GeForce GTX 275, RV790XT in Sights

AMD is on the course of releasing a new line of high performance products based on its upcoming RV790 graphics processor. The high-end single GPU SKU, Radeon HD 4890 is expected to be competitive with NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 260 (216 SP). NVIDIA on the other end of the field, is planning a retaliation to the RV790. The GPU giant is carving out a new SKU based on the 55 nm G200b: GeForce GTX 275.

The new SKU will be placed in the US $225~275 range. While the specifications are not known at this point in time, there are two theories: G200b with 216 stream processors and a 512-bit memory interface, and the other theory suggesting 240 stream processors with the existing 448-bit memory interface on GTX 260. The latter looks inexpensive as the former would step up manufacturing costs due to the addition of two memory chips.

From our source, this is 50-50 right now. If the RV790 is closer to GTX285, there wont be a 275 but instead 285 will get a price-cut.

Makes sense to me. I really don't see the market demanding a card in the middle of the 260 and 285 especially at that price point. With the 4870's apparently getting another price cut, it seems as if the RV790 based GPU's will indeed be around $200 bucks. In this economy a 285 with a price cut would be much more welcomed than a new card.

Hmh GTX 280 is already there. Of course it's EOL, but this is getting funky. I was hoping HD4890 wouldn't be faster than my GTX 280 and now I must hope that GTX 275 isn't faster either. With full shaders and GTX 260 clocks it would be, but they it would be called GTX 285 and that is already out.

Kinda tight spot they are aiming at, high end has never had this much competition.
GTX 260 (192) 65nm, GTX 260 (216) 65nm, GTX 260 (216) 55nm, GTX 280 (240) 65nm, GTX 285 (240) 55nm, GTX 295 (240x2) 55nm and then this GTX 275 + all ATI 4870 stuff + 4850x2.

Meh -- neither one of these cards, either the 4890 or the 275, is likely to be anything special.

I'm waiting for some sort of freaky dual-GPU version of the 40nm RV740. Now, that's a card that'll scream, and be cheap and power-conscious to boot.

Well first they released the GTX260 192/GTX280 to counterpart the 4870x2/4850/4870. GTX 260 192 failed hardly against the 4870 so they released the 216 shaders which performed a bit higher than the 4870. Then they found out that the GTX280 can't perform close to the 4870x2 so they released the 285/295. GTX 275 will counterpart RV790 the whole rebranding is just crap.

You know, one day (and I honestly wouldn't mind this) the model numbers are just going to be simple numbers. No "HD" or "GTX" prefixes, even.

The Nvidia "17" will be slower than the "23" and faster than the "8," for example. I think it's cool -- kinda like a luxury sports car or someting.

i was thinking about getting myself an nvidia card, and now, as a matter of principle, i won't because they have one (n-models) model too many. :shadedshu

they could put the 4870 in its grave if they released a 240 sp card clocked 5-10% higher.

lets say a GTX260 core 240 (GTX275), running 633/1404/2200 would keep them clear up top and i doubt much they would have to worry about chips reaching these speeds. that still leaves plenty of oc headroom.

the extra shader cluster has shown those 5-10% gains themselves (192-216), and ~10% clocking will assure that stays well on top of a 4890, as it tends to beat a 4870 now. however the lack of ROPS, memory and a small sacrifice of speed keeps in nicely in check behind a GTX285 (which a 4870 would need a complete overhaul or LN2 to beat one)

some people say nvidia rebranding is sneaky, what i think is sneaky is selling your cards at a given cost, lets say $200 flat, and as soon as the competitions lands at that same price and performs the same, they undercut them!

of course ATi will price cut, its what you have to do when your on the losing edge. for all those who say that 48701gb > GTX260 and 4870X2 > GTX295 you are clearly wrong. ATi cut the prices to come in under the competition and its a clear admittance that their product is not as good. otherwise it would naturally sell for the same or more, and there would be no point in buying nvidia ever.

of course ATI beats NV in "some benchmarks" but were not talking about the exceptions, on the whole the GTX260 already comes out on top of a 4870.

as per your price comment.... im at a loss, yes i said it myself that theyre not as fast, they also dont cost as much, works great for us as you always get value for money. for example the ATi card performs 10% worse but costs 10% less. nobody loses as you always get pretty much the same Bang for Buck.

making the choice very EVEN, not to mention NV beats ATi in some benchmarks.

man its an example, if i quoted a real price it would have a link too. not to mention right now nvidia are the ones selling GTX260's at LESS than ATi's 1Gb 4870's

Great, wonder if anyone lost count of Nvidia product naming? I gave up remembering their low-midrange card because it's just a bloody mess. I'd wait for dx11 card because my HD3870x2 or your 9800gx2 @ 1920x1200res can pretty much handle everything atm. If you got anything less than that then I recommended the upcoming GTX275/Hd4890.
