Ah but as alwase it seems you are blind to the fact that 1. they can emulate the missing hardware via gpgpu/cuda/stream/opencl (as mussels said) and 2. its not full emulation, just emulation of a few features.

I wouldnt be suprised at all to find that nvidias new card isnt truely dx11 hardware just an extreamly over powered verion of what they got now running it all via cuda.

hell look at it this way, nvidia couldnt even be arsed to support 10 properly in the first place, MS cut the 10 specs back to mesh with the g80, then when 10.1 came out, nvidia still couldnt be arsed to support it with their new chips/cores(gtx200 cards)

Im no nvidia hater, but fact is, ATI has been ahead in TRUE support for directX and in some cases even OGL for quite some time.

the 2900 for example can support dx10.1, because it was DESIGNED FROM THE GROUND UP to be a "true dx10 card" (aka dx10.1)

having said that, I dont see dx11 taking off any faster then dx10/10.1 have due to people who insist on holding onto windows XP, and honestly i dont see full dx11 support coming to XP since ms has just cut free support for xp(April first)

you all might as well accpet it, people who wont try/use vista, are very unlikely to like/try/use windows7, as its just vista with a more macish gui.

so ppl like KetX wont like it, any more then they liked vista, and will insist that xp is still the best/only choice for true enthusists/gamers(rofl?)

blah, wait and see, you will see people who wont upgrade using the excuse that xp's better, when its really that they cant find a pre-cracked copy that wont get de-activated by ms on TPB or other such sites and they are to cheap to buy a copy OR to stupid to find a way around activation thats not gonna get blocked via an update :p

+1 to the above mentioned but couldnt they just enhance dx 10.1 without forcing everyone into buying a new gpu?

no, because nvidia wont even support 10.1, and also, you gotta up the dx version regularly so that ati, nvidia and everybody else can sell their new gpu's and keep the cycle of useless/pointless upgrading going.

And what you're saying about Microsoft bending it's hardware requirements for something so that a manufacturer can sell off all there old stock is true. Microsoft did it for the g80 GPU and for Intel surrounding the Vista home premium ready/capable shebazz.

I highly doubt we'll see any triple-A DX11 tities titles this year. But if you look back at the g80 era, that card (and it's cripples) sold very well for a long time (even without any DX10 games) because it was the only card that could kick the X1950XTX's butt (the 7950GX2 drivers blowed at the time) in DX9 games. So, if the 5870 can wipe the floor with the GTX285 (or especially vs the GTX295), it'll sell very well.

A question I have is, is DX11 a superset of DX10.1? In otherwords, if/when Nvidia supports DX11, will they be able to have their cards natively run DX10.1 codepaths in games like HawX?

wrong, the 3800 is a MINOR upgrade(added better Avivo support and shrunk the die) the core 3d features didnt change, so the 2900 supports 10.1(what was orignaly going to be dx10)

Yes, a dx11 nv card is able to run dx10.1 codepaths.

Frying, if you just joined the site how do you know anything about Ketexx? Seems like an alt account or a banned person.

I wish I could say the same, wonder how much that bad boy will be at release.

Nvidia is always slow to new tech. I think they're still trying to milk GDDR3 as much as possible and their answer to DX11 might be that they don't give a darn yet. Impressive benchmark is another thing but impressive hardware tech with good price tag is as important. Support or die!

as i said, they could very well just use cuda to emulate the dx11 features needed to call their card dx11 and milk that for a few more years.

as to gddr3, they bought HUGE ammounts of gddr3 from qimonda at a VERY reduced price(in part helping kill the company because they gave to good a deal to nvidia)

nvidia will milk it till they run out or till they can get the same kinda deal on gddr5, then maby we will see a card with some truely new tech from nvidia.

for now my 8800gts 512 is doing its job, no need to "upgrade"

Smart man. Fight the upgrade bug until you can't anymore (I have a hard time fighting it).

I do hope NVIDIA catches up... Because how many titles will be released if only ATI has dx11 hardware?

well, unlike in the past with NV cards i have owned(fx line, 6600/6800/7k) nvidia's been doing some massive updates to the drivers for the 8800 and its given me more perf and more features, so i see no value in "upgrading" since my only upgrade path with nvidia is a gtx260 or 280 really, anything else would be the same chip i got with a diffrent name/pcb....

So true for you if your only sticking with nvidia. But seriously, you can play games at acceptable frame rates and settings with worse cards then we have. A 9600gt/3870 and up is all I really would need for me to be happy with my gaming. It's just 4850 CF was sooooooo sweet looking ;).

oh, im not an nvidia fan, but the cost to get an ati card thats better then what i got wouldnt be any better, basickly its a crapshoot, any upgrade I made would have to cost alot to give me a worthwhile perf gain, so its not really worth it to me.

specly seeing as i keep getting perf gains with this card, recently had a few games get a 20+% boost from a driver(not ones listed by nvidia as gaining anything)

This is super special awesome. I can't wait to have one of those DX11 cards.
Reason being because I currently have a DX9 Nvidia card so give me a slack >_>, I'll be skipping DX10 altogether =).

I can't wait to see ATi kick some ass and drinking cups of tea ^_^.

Oh an flying weesel. Just to let you know, 7 is not just a gui upgrade. It's actually, a good product. Also, 7 is actually older than Vista. 7 really isn't an upgrade folks, it's what microsoft originally had planned to release from the get go but couldn't get it out on time. Vista is built from it.

nope, thats not true, i got relitives who work for ms, 7 was alwase planned for after vista, but the programers planned to get vista to at least the sp1 stage b4 it came out, ballmer wanted it out ASAP to boost profits.....it worked vista sold via OEM's if not on the retail os market.

they alwase planed to put out 7 within 3 years, balmer plans to get a new windows out every 2-3 years from now on, it will boost profits a few ways

1. people will buy the new one to keep up to date.

2. OEM's will have to buy new version licenses even if they still got plenty of licenses for older version that people already like.

3. training fees, adobe has done this for years, they many times put out a new version thats just different enough to need people to re-train on adobe apps, so adobe makes more off training then off the software itself.

there are more reasons but those are the top3, basically if they keep to a short os cycle they can boost sales even if the changes to the core os arent that big, just enough os changes to force people to re-train.

Windows 7's main changes are gui and the service handler is configured differently, it starts services as needed, something that really helps with perf by default so geeks like us dont gotta spend alot of time disabling/reconfiguring services.

the os core of 7 is based on vista, just as vista's core is based on server 2003 and 2003 was based on 2000(xp was another branch of the same project both are based on 2k, but 2k3 took alot more time to come out because it had to be rock stable)

I could go more into it, but 7 was not a separate branch, its just an evolution on the core the same as vista was, tho with vista they made more extensive changes to how things where managed, vista to 7 the changes are mostly cosmetic, the under the hood stuff is there but nothing that makes it a totaly different/new os.

vista sp2 should give about the same experiance without the new mac-ish taskbar :)
