Neither, I wouldnt bother with 1792MB cards I run on 896MB at 1920 x 1200 always with max detail and 8x AA and never get any stuttering or issues, especially as you have 3Gigs of RAM on a 32 bit Operating system, you are losing nearly a Gig of RAM.

What about the FTW edition of that Evga? It has more memory bandwidth, would that equate to better overclocking? It's the same chip in all three 275's just different clocks, memory, and bandwidth. What do you think tatty?

Well OK, in that case I would go for the 275 any day of the week however your argument about the extra video memory offsetting the system memory does not work I am afraid, take out disk swapping for in-suffucient memory on the card and you are still left with games that require a lot of system ram these days, your nice 3GB kit becomes a just over 2GB kit with either of those cards in a 32 bit OS and whilst that will do I agree, you are throwing away almost a third of the cost of your RAM for free plus the additional cost of the 1792 version, you really dont need any more than the 896MB version as I said earlier but it's upto you!

Both cards are nice, the MSI with the extra phases may have better than average overclocking abilities for the 260 but it's still not quite a 275 but either will do you good.

Edit: Just looked at the prices, for 15 bucks difference then IMO the 275 is the way to go, you do realise in most things it's faster than a 280?

What.... they have had the card since 2nd April? WTF, drop Palitguy a PM and ask if he can help, he will if he can, it should not take all that time for it to be tested and replaced.... no way.

Nice, looking forward to some results. I've been considering snagging a 275 or 285 in the future, but I think I'll just wait for the AC cooler to come out and slap that on my 260 and push it further.

On a plus note, finally got W7 7100 installed on my backup hdd, I just installed the 182.08 vista whql's (no issues, popups, etc), and they work great. I would try the new whql's, but I wasn't impressed w/performance in Vista, at least in DX10 (in Cryostasis and Bioshock). But good news is 182.08's drop to 2D fine in 7, probably old news tho. Now if I can get PB+7 to work with 2142 and CoD4 I'd be set! LoL, though after running Vista SP2, the feel of 7 doesn't seem any faster.

180.84 is one of my backups, I really haven't had issues up until the 182.50whql, the newest 185 whql sucked for DX10 performance (at least in Cryostasis and Bioshock), as I mentioned in a post earlier I'm running on 182.08's, great drivers, run stable for folding and gaming, at least for me. What kind of crash does it do in Empire? I don't have that game, never tried it, so I may have to go check in the game's section to see your issue.

Crash, I'll have to try out CoD4 in XP compatability mode...definately interesting. Have you heard that it works for PB related issues in mp and 7?

Wasnt referring to compatibility mode. Windows 7 has a XP mode feature built into it. Its a separate download. Not sure how it works or anything like that but it may be worth a look into.

I'm about to be getting a gtx280 pretty soon. What kind of scores should I expect in 3dmark06 with a 4ghz q6600? Just wondering, I was sort of getting used to my above 20k scores.

Well, odds are if you're getting that GTX280 new or used w/all retail stuff it'll come with an adapter from either molex or 6-pin to 8-pin, my EVGA came with power adapters for 6 pin (260 model tho). Dunno about benches, I'm sure if you browse through the pages of this thread it'll give you some of an idea, I'm more on gaming performance than bencing myself, but that 280 should kick some serious ass Drizz. Nice clocks on the q6600 btw, no way my poor xig could keep a q cooled at that level of oc lol! Not when it takes 1.41v for 3.6ghz, but I stay plenty cool at that level, really more than I need so I'm pretty happy, but it'd be sweet to see the 4.0 mark on this quad! Makes me miss my e8600 lol!

Will do! My PSU has ninja 8 pin's though so no worries about that.

And man, I am done with caring about only benchmarks... that why I had 4850 crossfire after all... to push out high scores without spending a lot of money and turn up settings on my 1920x1200 monitor, but now I find myself running games and applications that either don't show any improvements from crossfire, or not enough.

I'm excited about the card though, espiecally since I'm going to throw it into my W/C loop. I hope I can software volt mod it too (not a bios flash, software!). SOOOO much easier and less scary then hard volt modding it like I did with some of my other card.

Your not going to find a gtx275 for the price that I got this oem gtx280. I have reasons to believe he is reliable and that the card isn't going to die on me.


P.s.... Don't expect higher then 4ghz on my quad (if it's possible, I think it is)...... Its starting to get hot here so I can't open up a window and control my temps as well as I could... If I get a cold night in the next week I'll try to get one more run in before summer... I expect in summer I will only be able to do 4ghz... idk if it's stable though. I have it stable at 3.825 but if you know about q6600's, the amount of voltage you need usually sky rockets after 3.6.

Well TBH if you have a good deal then it's not worth paying a premium for the 275, there is very little in it TBH and on the plus side for the 280, you can as you know software mod the voltages, you cannot do that with the 275.

275 isn't faster and they have less phase power than both the 280 gtx and 285 gtx.
