Accelero Xtreme GTX 280 mini review and support

does anyone knows if the GTX 285 stock cooler or GTX 260 stock cooler is the same as the GTX 280 stock cooler?
Because i need the VRM part you know...

Nope, GTX 285 cooler is different and so are all the 55nm coolers. You'll need a 65nm GTX 260 cooler, it's the same.

Reason I am asking is that I am going to try something like this with some different VRM coolers, but they are 9mm high.

9mm high is fine.

Max clearance for the vrm area is 11.5mm

Thanks. I had the heatsinks on top of the AC VRM sink, hence they didn't fit.

That 11,5mm is from PCB I assume? You cut 3mm of the enzotechs, or you just took of more to be safe PCI-e power plug barely fits and that's ~13mm.

Though the VRMs can't be much more than 1mm high, so 11.5mm sounds right.

That was just me thinking out loud, Biker knows better having made four(?) of these installations

The heatsink base needs to be about 6mm a side.... and you need seven of them

Yes.

Onboard stuck the sinks ON TOP of the supplied VRM cooler, not directly on the VRM's...

As you can see, there is not much space there to stick to and if the sink is too heavy it will simply fall of...

I suppose the Zerotherm "C-Type" (11 in the pack) might just do it but I have none here to test with...

Yes, they would fit, but I doubt they'd cool enough on GTX 280. If you have a GTX 260, then probably yes. Artic Cooling is even saying the VRM plate is optional on GTX 260, kinda bold claim, would hate to see anyone braking their card.

Please don't do the above with 65nm GTX 260, or if you really must, test the temps you get. For new layout cards it's a different matter, they have redesigned VRM area that runs much cooler (and is easier to sink).

I've debated the HR-03 a couple times, or trying the 120mm fan mod on the stock cooler someone someone posted earlier, I recently tore down and did a thourough cleaning of the sink, getting better temps, but it's so nice to have a quiet rig that runs cool with the GTX260 running 40%...though I run around 60% with OC.

C'mon AC, get that cooler over here!

awesome thread , Ive just today ordered 2 Gainward GTX260+ 1792mb cards, not sure what the VRM or memory cooling scenario is but you can bet ill have a thorough look

Ive been thru a 65nm GTX260 c216 and a GTX295, both of which had vrm temps between 80-100 while under full load, however i left the cooling on both stock, as i found the GTX260's to be awesomely sufficient and quiet, while looking great and feeling really sturdy, and seriously screw changing a GTX295's cooler... i wanted the backplate but never got one...

anyone know if the Palit/Gainward GTX260 1792's come with a backplate, i cant find a pic of the back of one

GTX Mod

Thanks to OnBoard i did the mod as well on my Gigabyte GTX 285, a slightly different but almost the same.
Instead of cutting only to the vrm's i included the first row of the VRAM section.
I used a litle bit of Arctic silver to cover the VRM and VRAM sections and mounted it back with the original screws.
Im still not happy with the other VRAM's and the NVIO chip and i will replace that later with coppper heatsinks!

After that i started to playing with Nibitor and edited the BIOS so that over 50c the Fans of the Arctic Xtreme runs at 100%, still it is much better than the stock cooler!
The sound of the stock cooler was driving me crazy, this cooler at full speed is not annoying!

So my card is now running on:
GPU: 740
Shader clock:1600
Memory:1400

The card is rock solid and giving me the result of 17400 in 3DMark @ 1920x1200
With 16xASF,8AA @ 1920x1200,its giving me 12300 wich is close to the GTX 295 performance

Looks good So the GTX285 doesn't even cool the VRM's with the stock cooler, must run pretty cool. Plenty holes though for Accelero to push air there.

NVIO plate doesn't seem to cover the left side RAM that well, it having 4 chips there instead of 2 in GTX 280. You could take a bit of the top and bottom right corner, so that it only covers the two middle chips and then use the rest of the other RAMsink to cover the last 2.

The NVIO HSI heatsink from the set didnt fit (was already afraight of this) so i did mod the Arctic NVIO heatsink and now it is much better

I discovered while testing that the memory is able to run @ 1425 instead of 1400, so the vram sinks do their job OK.

what i did was water cool both of them but then sold one. i really wanst happy with 100 degree VRM temps so i dismantled the stock cooler.

Turns out there's a massive coverage plate on the 4870 cooler that does VRM's memory etc, the lot bar the GPU, so i attached that and the w/c block on top, and voila, back to stock VRm temps

its a kick ass mod, and so cost effective, reusing parts of a cooler you've already scrapped.

Yep, spotted that on some other thread. Good thing with 4870 cooler is that is has a big hole in core spot. No need to cut to make room for aftermarket cooler mounts.

yeah the shroud is perfect, has a perfect square cut out for the core, it fit my water block with barely mm's to spare.

the solution before was zalman ram heatsinks and a temp controlled fan, given the VRM's were 100+ degrees, the fan was LOUD for a 60mm, the solution i came up with (the core of this thread) is by far the best solution.

with the amount of people adopting this "broad" solution for aftermarket cooling their cards, im sure you'll see 200 posts and 14k views soon enough.
