DONT run furmark for that amount of time..... your vrm temps will be dangerously high....

i dont know of any other application that heats up your card so badly....

use a game like crysis to test stability....not an app wich will shorten the lifespan of your card....

+1

Absolutely true. I stopped using Furmark a long time ago, with my HD48xx cards. Use almost anything else...

Or just cough up for some VRM heatsinks and actually make your card stable. If you're worried about temperatures getting too high, find a way to cool it down. How do you know that Crysis isn't as demanding as Furmark?

None of my 48xx series cards have vrm temp problems because I put a fan blowing directly on the vrms. Not even furmark pushes them.

Wile E,
You have MCW60 on that HD4870? Do you use the baseplate of the stock HSF to cool VRMs?
If so, what VRM temps does Rivatuner/ATiTool report?

I don't remember exactly, but I don't recall temps ever getting past the 60's C, with the MCW60. My reference 4870 was an HIS 512MB, that had a flower cooler and separate vrm and memory heatsinks. I took the 70mm fan off of an AMD cpu heatsink, and mounted it on my mobo tray, pointing directly at the vregs of most video cards in my bottom slot, approx 2" away.

Never got a chance to vmod it, or ever to push it at all really. Just maxed Overdrive, basically. It died within a few days. It was getting memory artifacting after about 3 days. Made sure everything was seated properly, even tried the stock cooler again, but no luck. Sent it back to Newegg for a refund, and bought this Powercolor PCS 1GB instead, as I decided it would go better with an X2 if/when I would get the chance to buy one.

I'm going to go W7 later. Want to get 64 bit with the XP in it.

3dMark06 on my machine.

In XP with HD4890 I scored 20,300 with single HD4890.
Scored over 22,000 with HD4890 xfired with HD4850.

Do you suspect lack of power from your PSU?

Lack of CPU power would more likely. Lack of power is more of a crash your system type of thing.

Yeah, I have the same PSU, and it's fine in my system, which draws even more power than yours.

2 things

Is it possable to add the power phase from lets say a PALit 8800GT to this card? I have two cards here so I have 6xR30 2x1r2 and 2x1R0

Also is there a way to add the extra 2pin that will be on the new 1Ghz cards?

DaMulta,
If the cards had VRMs made of same exact parts you could do that, but you can't mix any non-Volterra parts with Volterra parts on a reference 4890.

Creating a makeshift 8pin plug by adding the extra pins (which are grounds) wouldn't do anything. If AMD had originally put 6+8pin on the board instead of 6+6pin there would be no gain either. The fact that some AIB put a 8pin on their cards is nothing but a marketing trick.

Electrically 6pin and 8pin PCIe power plugs are identical, the only difference being numbers on the spec sheet in PCI-SIG's basement archive. If a video card requires > 75W from a 6pin plug it will draw it and there's nothing that would prevent it from doing so. The wires themselves, and as such the whole connector is capable of much more than 2A per wire (6A total)...

And as I said, the extra pins on 8pin are just grounds. If 8pin offered an additional +12V plus a ground it might be electrically justifiable. But adding just grounds in the location they are missing from certainly wouldn't make any difference. Maybe if they were closer to the load - like right on the backside of the GPU chip - they might actually do something... On a good day.

To actually answer your question:
Sure, you can add the missing pins.

Kinda late, but I'll chime in anyway :p Theres nothing wrong with Furmark. It warns about how it will stress your card, and as such it immediately becomes obvious Furmark is supposed to be used in conjunction with a decent cooling solution on your card. Lets take a HD4830 as its a good example, most manufacturers only slap a cooler on for the GPU and memory, but no heatsinks on the VRMs as the card is "budget". However theres still pushpin holes to add heatsinks. Any heatsink that fits on a HD3870/50 will fit on a HD4830. You can buy such a heatsink for about £3 (Zalman) so stop being so god damn tight and spend the friggin £3 on a heatsink :p

HD 4890 Crossfire @ 1GHz on the core doesn't break 10k in the GPU portion of Vantage @ extreme quality under Windows 7? Two 260s will do that @ 702|2260. Below is a run I tried with PPU disabled and my i7 920 @ 3.2GHz under Windows 7 x64 with the 185.85 driver.

Hey DarkEgo, how do you like that Scythe Musashi? Did it drop your temps considerably? Also, did you have any trouble fitting it on your 4890?

Do you have heatsinks on your vregs? I wouldn't run the card if you didn't. You can pick up Enzotech ram sinks from Petrastechshop. The fan not over the core should cool them properly.

Those are the vregs on my GPU not mobo.
