HKEPC says that Intel has confirmed to release Quad-core Desktop processor earlier. The first Desktop quad-core processor was originally scheduled to be officially released in 2007 Q1, but the date has been pushed earlier to 2006 Q4, according to the latest roadmap from Intel. The price is also set at $999, following the traditional price for the most high-end Core 2 Extreme products. The official name has not been decided yet, but the specifications are confirmed. It will be Socket 775 CPU, clocked at 2.66GHz with 4MB L2 x2 Cache at 1066MHZ FSB, manifactured by 65nm process and supporting Enhanced Intel Speedstep, Intel Virtualization and Execute Bit Disable. In addition, quad-core Server processor Covertown is also pushed earlier to 2006 Q4, and will be named to Intel Xeon 5300 family. Similar to Kentsfield(2xConroe cores), Covertown will be made from combining two Woodcrest cores together with FSB reduced from 1333MHz to 1066 MHz. AMD still has no plan to any quad-core product until 2007 Q3, according to the latest roadmap from AMD.
