275 isn't faster and they have less phase power than both the 280 gtx and 285 gtx.

lol, you are saying that to someone who has owned both, the 275 is a little faster, and I did say a "litttle" earlier, I only had this card for a week with my Yorkfield before I upgraded to i7, but at the exact same system settings (profile saved in BIOS) at 4.410 gig on my old Q9650 the 275 gave me 450 more 2006 points and 4FPS in COD WaW than the 280 on MAX clocks, I never do benches at stock so at stock there may not be any difference.

The 275 has 4 less ROP's than the 280 however it has a higher transistor count and efficiency............ take a look at the TPU review on the Zotak Amp edition, forget about that card though and check the stock cards performance ABOVE that of the 280 across all resolutions :p

The comparison in phase power between the 280 and the 275 is irrelivant, the 275 needs less as its more efficient at 55nm, the 280 of course is 65nm.

Have yo tried a 2006 run yet? Nice buy!

BNIB for $300 shipped :D

I havent run anything yet. Give me the app and ill run it.

Also, what are ppl seeing in terms of OC on this type of card? Im at 47*C with a game running atm.

Dunno really, you should be able to hit anything between 710 and 750 on the core, whether the shaders will handle that "linked" is another thing, I would tweak linked first to see what you get, then try unlinking and lowering the shaders by 25mhz and then see how high the core will go, in most things the higher core speed will have the greatest impact.

I have owned several 280 gtxs and a 285 gtx and the 280 gtx matches a 285 gtx performance when overclocked to the same speeds. Following that logic since the 285 gtx has a better power phase than a 275 gtx, a 275 is not faster ( both have 55nm chips but they are not made on the same PCB and do not have the same power phases ). The 280 gtx runs hotter but can handle more voltage than both the 285gtx and 275gtx via the evga or rivia tuner voltage tools, making it run just as fast as a 285, and even though the 285 has faster ram , ram makes very little difference I found after 2300 mghz. Also the 285 gtx can take more voltage than the 275 due to it's better power phase and will overclock higher. The 275 is not faster than either the 280 gtx or the 285 gtx, it is close but then so is a 260 gtx 216 when you max overclock it. The 275 has less overall ram than both a 280 and 285 , weaker power (6 phase not 8 phase like the 280 and 285 ) , has a smaller bit bus and 4 less rops than both the 280 and 285 . The 280 runs hotter but performs better at a max overclock as does the 285 gtx. It maybe be a better buy in some cases but it is not faster. P.S the 280,285 and 275 all have 1400m transistors on the gpu. There is no difference in transistor count. The only difference in the gpu is size. Sorry my friend but you are not right here. :p

Just noticed your thumb nail , there is a significant difference in stock clocks from a 280 gtx and a 275 gtx. The 275 is just overclocked more to begin with. Thats no where near a fair comparison, a 280 gtx at 700 core, 1540 shaders and 2300 ram would more than equal that and still have more overclocking head room. I realize you said forget that chart but man compare them at the same gpu clock for goodness sakes. Also on all these cards once you go past 700 core, 1500 shaders and 2300 ram there is almost no benefit at all thats why no company really clocks them that way . Trust me a 285 gtx can go over 750 core no problem but there is almost no benefit.

LMAO, what has the stock clocks gotta do with it, thats the cards, the TPU review clearly shows the 275 is faster than the 280 across loads of tests at all resolutions and is a fair bit ahead of a 260, now you can choose to quote power phases all you like, it wont change things :rockout:

Thats a stock for stock comparison, thats the way the 280 has always been and the way the 275 is.....next you will be saying that your 260 is faster than my 4870x2 because the x2 stocks at 750mhz and thats just not fair! :nutkick: Nice try Thomas ;)

Several other reviews show the 280 gtx pulling away at higher resolutions Tatty, there is not substitution for rops , bus size, power phase and larger amounts of ram. Especially when both chips have the same transistor count and use the same gpu. ( even though they are different sizes) You cannot compare a stock 280 gtx at 602/1296/1107 to a stock 275 gtx 633/1404/1134 thats no way near fair, all the 275 is a hybrid 260 gtx 216 with more shaders, starting out with a higher overclock. Overclock them the same and see which is faster.

Well clearly thats not the case here, no less TMU's but less (4) ROP's could actually give a better balance, well it is the case here, I am not denying the architecture, I am simply denying the fact that the arguments in favour of the 280 dont work becouse across the board it is slightly slower, yes it wins in some things....... but less than it loses in, that substantiates my honest findings having benched both cards.

Bus size only matters if there is a bottleneck, the 260 has a bigger bus than the 4890 but the 4890 is still faster because current games dont utilise it fully.

Going to bed now..... catch you tomorrow!

ooo ^^ Read the whole thing, I hope your right!

What is better to use, the evga voltage tool or the riva? The evga looks easier, I remember reading about the riva one on XS and tried it on my 4850 with no luck (at the time it was unknown which cards it worked for).

The 280 has too much more brute force, but no matter it's like a chocolate cake with sprinkles or without both are chocolate cake. :D

I would suggest rivatuner for stability, I tried both when I had the XFX 280 and had better results (in overclocking terms) with rivatuner.

The 280 has too much more brute force, but no matter it's like a chocolate cake with sprinkles or without both are chocolate cake. :D

How so much more brute force? 4 ROP's is the major difference, both have 240SP's, it's just that the 275 does everything the 280 does using less power and runs cooler, it certainly does not overclock better and the 280's can be had for amazing prices ATM, as I said to Drizzt5 earlier, I certainly would not pay a premium for a 275 over a 280, but the card is much more efficient at what it does.

I don't think I'll be getting that gtx280 unfortunately. I'll see what I can do to get it, but I'm obviously not spending a lot or I would just get a 4890 or 275.

Bought my first GTX260 192SP back in august, went SLI in december with a 216SP, worked well, nps. Later I built a rig of old and new parts, gave me a reason to add another 216SP to the SLI rig :D

Both are Leadtek 216SP, 65nm, oc exactly the same 729/1512/1260 at stock 1.06v. Flashed and tested 1.12 + 1.15v, I only would gain 27MHz higher core speed, so, I flashed to their minimum volts 1.05v (and this is how I run them today), and I got the same oc of 729/1512/1260. When in SLI, I don't care abt OC'ing them, games run sweet anyhow. 130 or 150fps doesnt matter, 53C or 58C does :)

+6 month old G200 cards are full of dust, I opened and cleaned the 192SP one (8 months old, a bit tricky to get the plastic cover off, but card is completely un-damaged)...gee, no wonder the temps rised ! The oldest 216SP card I only vacuum-cleaned thru the intake hole, seemed to help, temp lowered some.

In SLI, gaming temps are ~53C, and when using one card, the performance gets higher and prolly 60C.

// adding a 3DMark Vantage run. Top card is stuck at 3D mode, the lower card has dropped to 2D mode, 1.05v in all modes.

Nice Triton. My 192 ran from July to Sept, then I stepped up to the 216, ran both at gtx 260 192sp FTW clocks 666/1436 (linked, reads 666/1458) and then I upp the mem a tad more to 1200 (reads 1188), runs great. I do have issues with Company of Heroes DX10 and Dawn of War II at OC clocks, but stock clocks are ok...dunno what's up there, otherwise pretty solid thus far quite a few months into the 216 and only a couple months from a year total on owning a gtx260. Pretty damn impressed with game performance, upgraded to a 24" LCD for 1920x1080 and to my suprise my game performance stayed very close to what I attained at 1680x1050 so I am very content.

Though I recently took apart the cooler and found some dust built up in front of the fins, not as bad as pics recently posted in another thread, but cleaned it up, along with new TIM, the card runs great. I am able to fold using .988v (using 182.08 drivers and EVGA GVT), and game at 1.000v though, but I usually just leave it alone at stock 1.06v. I am still patiently waiting for the Accellero Xtreme GTX cooler to be released, but I might just stick with the stock cooler as-is, it does a very good job and keeps my costs down. Hard saying when I'll replace it, I'm probably gonna wait to see with the GTX3xx and HD5xxx have to offer as a worthy replacement in my price-range.

thought about cost/performance/heat/noise:

GTS 250 1GB, over-volted, max oc'd, aftermarket cooler
vs
Under-volted GTX260, stock clocks

would be ~same price, warranty voided on GTS 250, GTX260 still far more powerful, cooler and quiter ;)

I'd want a EVGA Voltage Tuner app to raise 3D volts when I NEED them higher (benching), but I'd still probably have my BIOS left at lowest possible volts.

The amount of dust found :D After you go SLI you really don't have time cleaning the house :D I did the same to old G80 GTS, after one year there was a "mouse-ful" inside ;) But next time my gpus need cleaning, I'll just vacuum-clean them from the intakes.

I hope I don't have to buy next gen, but next after, and don't wanna pay more than what one 260 costs today.

Yeah, as soon as I see something fishy about that cloth covering the boat, hit escape and salvage a BSOD :D

Where? Locally or Online? I would much rather have a 285 than a 275 if they are same price.
