Alienware Unveils M17x Flagship Gaming Laptop

Alienware on Friday took the wraps off it refreshed Aurora M17x gaming laptop. With a new chassis, the M17x can't be mistaken, its new shape is one of a kind. Inside the beast lie low a pair of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M 1 GB graphics cards, an integrated NVIDIA GeForce 9400M GPU with HybridPower technology, up to 8 GB of DDR3-1333 RAM, dual-hard drives, an Intel Core 2 Extreme quad-core CPU and all the stuff a top gaming laptop should have. The M17x comes with a 17-inch WUXGA display with 1920x1200 native resolution. It weights 11.68 pounds or 5.3 kg, and has a 9-cell battery. Other standard features include custom backlit keyboard, touchpad and trim lighting. Base price for this model is $1,799 and it gives you a single GTX 280M, 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 4 GB of RAM, and a 250 GB hard drive. The Alienware M17x will start shipping to customers next week.

Those aren't true 280's they are 9800GTX+'s, good cards, just wish it wasn't so misleading.

The design is awsome but it is damn heavy and you have to sell a lung to buy it!
Why don't they use carbon fiber? For this kind of laptop that would be a must...and it would be lighter!

And then we go back to the $3000+ price tag. They didn't use it so they could offer it at a lower price in these low economy times. I do agree that it should be an option as I think most of their stuff is built to order anyway.

Hmmm, very interesting, I have indeed seen some sites call it an '8800 GTX M', like WTF is that? So it's the equivalent to a 9800GTX+? Still not too shabby tho, find me a lappy running anything better, especially with the capability for SLI.

$2200 for a quad core and 4870x2 and ATi doesn't mess with tricky names, that is a full fledged 4870x2.

Nope its 4870's crossfired but counts as a 4870X2.

haha wow 1kurgan1 just like killed the purpose of purchasing that laptop from alienware , 2x 4870 kill the 9800GTX+. dam nice price for that lappy on newegg, wish the CPU was slightly faster, probly bottleneck the cards at that speed. Oh and these GTX 280M's(9800GTX+ it seems) may be a new addition to alienware's laptop line, but www.killernotebooks.com has had SLI 9800GTX+ option for quite some time now, though they are alienware's twin brother in pricing.

EDTI: nvm, i hate how they give notebook graphic cards the same name as their desktop counterpart yet they're far inferior. The ATI mobility HD 4870's performance is between a desktop HD 4830 and HD 4850. and the GTX 280m(based on the G92b core) is slightly better. though still that notebook on the egg is much better bang/buck

GTX280m = 128 Shaders so 9800GTX+
9800GTXm = 112 Shaders so 9800GT
9800GTm = 96 Shaders so 9600ish

There are subtle differences technically but performance wise that is their desktop equivelants.

In ATI's case the only odd one out is the Mobility Radeon HD 4860 (which is between the 4850 and 4870 in performance) because it doesn't have a desktop equivalent.

wow, the HD 4860 mobility actually looks pretty good, it's core clock is only 100mhz slower than its desktop counterpart, HD 4770. Now what surprises me is it's GDDR5 memory is supposed to come clocked at 1,000mhz(4ghz effective) which is 200/800mhz effective faster than the HD 4770. Should be a nice chip and if AMD sells it cheap like it does the HD 4770 it'll hopefully be in a few sub $1000 laptops.

Just a side note, anyone else notice that newegg only has 1 HD 4770 that shows up when u search for it, and it's still out of stock till next friday. What's with low supply of HD 4770's, AMD needs to pump that chip out, they were making good cash off it. 0 results at tigerdirect,

EDIT: not tryin to steal the thread but here's some info on that i just googled. I thought AMD had the 40nm down pat for HD 4770 guess not
