They are basically trying what they tried a few years back with names. The Phenom name is for high performance and Athlon is for mid, and Turion is for low.

Back in the day it was Athlon, Sempron, and Duron.

Remember, this is just the beginning for them. 2 down and 8 more chips to go in the next month to fill out the new line of Processors for them. I imagine the Kuma will drop in price and many of the Dual Core 4000 and 5000 series will be discontinued in a few days.

Smart move by AMD.

With the release of the Phenom II 550 there is absolutely no reason to recommend the Core 2 E7xxx. The Phenom II 550 is just as fast, overclock just as far, and cheaper.

In the high-end market, the II X3 720 nullifies the Core 2 E8xxx, Q8200 etc.

The only area an Intel build would be necessary is in the i7 range is for performance for the extreme enthusiasts.

If AMD can price the Phenom II 550 below £60 I can definitely see myself upgrading to this

Nice to see AMD getting cheap AND fast overclokers.

Now it's justis the motherboard that has the features and OC ability you need if you go AMD or INTEL.

Sure an AM2+ board (if you have another CPU to update the bios) will win in the price, but you're left on DDR2. With AM3+DDR3+these are more expensive than C2D. Anyways more choice is always nice

Seems to have come down a lot.

These things (550) can be unlocked to quads yet a gain, same as the triple cores. (and most likely with as little success as the earlier ones

That is a small heatsink, they must run very cool even at 3.0GHz?

Just imagine how cool it would run with the heatpipe heatsink? dam lol

My 720BE runs only a few C higher than room temp with stock voltage/mhz

Get's up in the high 30's low 40's at 3.2ghz on stock voltage tho. 1.4v it gets in the low 50's but that's only while running linpack.

I would say these have no problem hitting 4.0 on air. Also, these procs will be given a hefty boost due to the available catch.
