The new version of ATI's driver suite introduces CrossFire support for the Intel 965 Chipset.
This feature is available for D3D applications, and is supported on ATI Radeon X1900 CrossFire edition products. As with most Catalyst releases, performance has increased in various situations.
  • 3DMark2006 overall performance improves 6.7-23.7% with anti-aliasing enabled due to improvements in HyperZ efficiency on the Radeon X1300, X1600 and X1800 series of products. The largest gains can be seen on Crossfire configurations and/or 256MB card configurations at resolutions of 1280x1024 or greater
  • Doom3 performances improves up to 9.3% due to further OpenGL shader complier and transform engine optimizations on the entire Radeon X1000 Series of products. The largest gains can be seen on Radeon X1900 configurations at resolutions of 1600x1200 or higher This feature is supported under the Windows XP operating system.
You can download the drivers here.

Hmmm...I seem to remember ATI saying crossfire would be IMPOSSIBLE on the 965 chipset before. Though of course that was the time when AMD was looking to buy them, so I guess they would lie about pretty much anything at that point to make themselves look more appealing to AMD.

Edit: I just looked it up, they did say it during Computex this year. They said it wouldn't work because 965 lacked Peer to Peer writes.

From what I understand, it was Intel that pulled that capability out of the 965. MSI just announced a 965 board that is capable of CF, but not released yet - who knows how they did it...

Its not even real 8x8 Crossfire or 16x16 CF... Its 16x4.. who wants that?? Not me.

ONT, please ATI, have some performance gains on games released the past year. Who plays Doom3?? Ok prey is great, but already done with it. Give me 25% performance gain in GRAW, or 25% gain in Call of Juarez.. or these other new games. Who cares about doom3 and 3dmark05-06?? Give us some usable driver boosts!!??

I just traded my 7900GTX for an X1900 XTX and I will definitely be running Crossfire on my DQ6. 16X4 should be meaningless performance wise. I am too excited!

I'll be shocked it if impacts gaming performance too heavily and I have a 24" LCD so I need dual GPU's to push it properly @ 1920X1200 when gaming. I'm not worried about benchmark scores, just gaming performance. Plus, I believe the Dongle will help ease the bandwidth issues for the second card. If not, then I guess I'll just have to go 975...... LOL!

that sounds cool. i hope it works as normal as a normal crossfire would i have no idea about the bandwidth limitations.

I tried them on my x1600pro and the result is the same as on 6.8 - the monitor turns off; I read about this issue somewhere and it's a nasty bug. I'll try using SP2 with XP cause I am using SP1 now

Well, they are only showing X1900 Crossfire support, so I don't know if any other combo is supported. I would expect them to advertise ANY combo of cards to make people buy more. THis will be interesting to say the least.

Has a peculiar issue with knocking my frequencies down everytime I exit an 3-D application, despite having all the ATI services disabled. Anyone know how to fix this? I kind of like to keep my clocks in the same place, as it doesn't change them back upon re-entry into a game.
