No, macs are just crap. I'm not paying 3k for something that costs 1-1.5k. I'll build/buy it and then proceed to load OSX on it. Why would I pay a thousand or more dollars just for the software? Seriously. That's being worse than m$ EVER has been.

The sad thing is that some people will pay for inferior hardware. If I need stable/secure OS, I'll load linux. If i need to run mac only programs....I'll do it in vmware.

For laptops, you are correct. But building your own, and ordering from an OEM cannot be compared directly. Two completely different markets. Look at the base dual-cpu MacPro, then spec out a similar dual-cpu workstation, with all the same software capabilities, tech support, all from a reputable OEM, and see how much it costs. ;)

VooDoo is to HP what Alienware is to Dell. The VooDoo Envy is an HP.

No, you just showed your hard one for overpaying (as if the avatar doesn't give it away).

The platform is fine, I have no problems with it. I have problems charging 3x what it's worth for THE SAME THING. The hardware is identical, get over it.

Great spec on the 15" model but seriously it's nice to see the guys at HP using their creative thinking, too in essence plagiarize a design. Must of took a lot of hard work to come up with that design. It pry went along these lines. "Well people keep saying how good the macbook looks but don't like the price, so lets make one that looks like it out of plastic since we don't want to spend the money on a CNC machine and tooling." Got to admit it's one way to save money on R&D. Yup I love my MBP, and I love my PC. So if you don't feel like spending the money to buy a Mac then don't, everyone knows how much they cost, and everyone knows their overpriced for a laptop. We can argue the PC/MAC thing all day long but in the end, that HP still looks like a mac and the MBP is still overpriced. Less not forget the MBP was released a year ago, I'm sure the next gen will have all the latest hardware stuffed in it. Then 3 weeks later intel will release another processor and another vendor will stuff all the latest hardware into their PC and well be having this conversation all over again. Vicious cycle! Well here's the end and that HP still looks like a MAC.

That's my point... they bought voodoo for the brand, and then they brand a product with better specs and the same name... branding fail.

Surrrre we can :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

4xxx series is powerful but thats just 20 short of a super sexy ultimate awesome 4850. not much to ENVY there. the DX10.1 performance is probably laughable at best. at least you can laugh yourself to death.
How do you figure? The 9800GTS M in my Gateway plays everything 1920x1200 with a P8400 CPU. The 4830 aka 4770 and i7 will spank anything thrown at it for a while minus DX11 future games. There is enough power there that dosent suck alot of outlet power. Its a good combo really. If you want PC performance through that extra dough in a PC.

For all of you that bitch about these looking like Macbooks, listen up.

HP has managed to offer a direct PC competitor to a Macbook for the same price point, and the specifications BLOW THE MACBOOKS AWAY. If they released comparable hardware on these, then you could complain all you want, but you can't deny that you're paying a HUGE premium for that Apple logo and software compared to these.
Exactly.

Thats because HP bought out Voodoo. They are entitled to use their name and logo if they please and since the Voodoo lab team work with HP you would expect to see Voodoo like hardware available.

That's my point... they bought voodoo for the brand, and then they brand a product with better specs and the same name... branding fail.
Not branding fail. When you hear the name Envy and know Voodoo from days of old you think overly priced laptop with half assed specs. When your only paying for the name. HP took that name people know, gave it better specs and a more wallet friendly price tag and put it out on the market. I dont see how thats such a bad thing at all. Its actually good marketing.

No its not. And YOU think that, obviously you don't know why people pay for the Voodoo brand, because you think its overpriced (it was actually about the same as a similarly equipped apple, at $1,699 - which is what this is priced at, and it came out a while ago). And 'Envy' is not the name HP was paying for... 'Voodoo' is. When you have multiple brands in a company, they each have a particular target market. When you cross target markets, your brands lose meaning and you start to cannibalize their sales.

Its like toyota coming out with the Toyota IS350, which beats the **** out of the lexus IS. Congratulations, you just neutered your high end brand. I don't know what marketing field you're in, but thats a big no-no.

Voodoo has better design language, and a better reputation as a luxury brand than HP. Hell every computer comes with a bag of chocolate-covered espresso beans (or it used to before HP bought it)... all the features, like laser etching and customization are there as well and already in place. If you're gonna take on apple, you're better off doing it by marketing voodoo than by neutering it.

Simple, because that is the point. They neutered their high end brand because it will no longer exist. We are in hard times and most cannot afford to drop $2000 on a laptop. What HP is doing is redefining their high end brand by bringing it down a price point or two. It is not your Toyota reference because these laptops do not have Toyota specs. This is more like Toyota simply going we are going to sell the Lexus IS series at the Lexus ES price. They have in fact neutered the HP branded high end computers. Why by a HP laptop at that price when I can get an Envy for the same price.

except both latpops are $1699 (voodoo price dropped), and HP is not Voodoo same as Toyota is not Lexus... so my example stands IMO... it is if Toyota built something with better specs than its lexus line and called it a Toyota IS. That wouldn't make sense right?

http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...landing=voodoo&category=envy&ppc=DSp143174444 <<there in its carbon-fiber glory

If HP sold the Voodoo envy at a lower price, than that is one thing. Instead they used the same name, same price, and their mainstream brand to market what is essentially a $1700 laptop with laser etching lol. IDK, im not saying it angers me or anything, just that its not usually done in companies that have a coherent brand strategy.

Yeah, but HP owns Voodoo just like Toyota owns Lexus. Toyota, like HP would not make a Luxury item to rival their own brands current line. I see your point, but Voodoo the company is dead. It is now just a name brand of HP and Envy is just another product line. Like the title states, they are not ruining Envy, they are redefining what it means.

That does make sense... I'm especially biased towards voodoo. They inspired so many of my own builds... they were the first to use all lian-li cases and such. HP and Dell signal cheap, plastic garbage computers with mediocre parts and even more mediocre design.

They WERE the premium PC. Now HP is doing to Voodoo what dell did to alienware. So sad to see a good brand go .

No they arent, many MORE people know HP than Voodoo and selling the Envy name as HP for people who know Voodoo.

Say your a nobody and think HP is good well youll get that highend laptop cause its HP.

Say your a tech savy guy and dont like HP but know the Envy name youll most likely consider it because you know Voodoo is now a part of HP.

Win-Win.

Go learn marketing then come back to this thread.

Also, Dell didnt ruin the Alienware name. They just get a market share off their highend overpriced pieces of metal. Dell didnt change the fact that they are overpriced pieces of metal, Alienware had that already. Dell is just getting a cut of the idiots who actualy buy those pieces of overly hyped crap. Same goes for HP and Voodoo and this laptop delima.

Oh and last time i looked when Voodoo was by themselves their sub-standard laptops where well over 5000 and their not-worth-the-price desktops where around 10,000. This was a few years before HP bought them out though. I remember seeing these prices on Maximum PC.

Look man... the reason that companies can sell that sh*t is because of good branding... If you're a nobody with $1700 to spend on a laptop and you don't know about Voodoo its because HP didn't advertise it. The HP envy is not carbon-fiber, and doesn't have the same quality as Voodoo, they are two completely different products with the same name from the same company.

And yeah... Voodoo brand was so powerful that they could sell overpriced $5000 laptops and make a killing.. now they can't... now no one knows about them.

I don't? Then by all means - enlighten me - where in any marketing publication does it say that its a good idea to spend massive amounts of money to buy a brand and then throw it away?

my previous post was mean, I agree... Ill edit it bc it was a bit innapropriate... but the reason that companies CAN sell overpriced crap is GOOD MARKETING... GOOD MARKETING is NOT about products, but image.

All three of you need to relax. You can express your differing opinions WITHOUT the insults, trolls and flamebaiting. It's completely uncalled for.

@PP - as far as VooDoo when they were still VooDoo, if you ever saw one in person, you would see why they charged so much. Just a bunch of small details that add up, and absolutely stunning wiring jobs. They were a premium brand because they went a step further than just throwing a bunch of parts in a case. Now, that may not be worth it to you, but it was to many. And those that did buy them weren't idiots because they did. Oh, and they weren't all $10,000. That was reserved for the fully decked out, insane amount of options builds.

@phanbuey - Responding with a comment about his living arrangements was pretty low.

@pr0n Inspector - No need to jump into it like that. Their comments didn't involve you.
