I really want to upgrade to a HD 5870 but Fermi needs to get released so prices can drop. Hurry up Jen-Hsun Huang, don't take too long with Fermi, no point in trying to beat out ATI, they got a surprise refresh awaiting Fermi's 1st week release:rolleyes:

I like my XFX Radeon HD 5770 1GB GDDR5 but I rather not buy another for Crossfire X, instead I just get single HD 5870 with a posibility of a Crossfire X setup later on when prices come down somemore.

Maybe some truth to the hot Fermi rumors?

EOF talking about PSUs

Attack from the Future!

I have it on very good authority that GPU power demands are about to explode once again!

Apparently the ATI 5870 X2 will either exceed the highest existing ATX/EPS specs, or ATI is going to have to under clock it, however this is not the big deal, the big deal is the Nvidia Fermi, it seems that all versions of this GPU that result in severely beating the 5870 require LOTS MORE +12V amperage even for a single GPU card than the existing ATX/EPS specs permit and will require more +12V amperage than the OCP (Over Current protection) will allow on a single +12V rail on most of today's multi-rail PSU's!

Unless my sources are completely wrong, which I see as being only wishful thinking, we are all headed back to God's original design, the Single Rail PSU!

Ehh?

You are talking about A1 silicon guys. The retail is A3.

And the average 12V rail A ratings have gone up last years. Almost all Enermax designs are >25A and Corsairs and Seasonics don't have any real rail specific limitations although the sticker claims so. 18A is the old way, now it is >20A or the design is obsolete.

if you have a newer psu you should be okay, and as in newer I mean bought one in the last few months because since then alot of manufacturers have been using 25A 12V rails, but if you have a older psu even if its like 1K your screwed.

most if not all corsairs are single rail and put out over 50A on 600+ watt versions though so those are safe too.

not sure about seasonic though, I avoid those.

Power Leakage is going to play a big factor though and its something no-one knows about fermi yet, every card leaks power from time to time, the question is how much.

True but its the A3 which they are having heat issues with. imo expect lower than expected clock speeds to keep those bad boys from cooking to death

Seasonic is one if not the best PSU manufacturer atm. The new X series are second to none.

I have the Enermax Revolution85+ 850w, which just got thrown off the first place in PSU world by Seasonic X series.

That almost sounds as if comfirming the problem, and explaining it away.

One must consider the source, but again this isn't any new news either...we knew many weeks ago that leakage was an issue for these chips, as I linked the info long ago.

I think next week we might hear more, but nV is playing this one close to the chest.

Disagreed. Nvidia has no new card out because it isn't finished yet.

The card is already finished. The real problem with it is that it has low yelds and it cannot produce enough. They want to produce as much as possible in order not to make the nvidia enthusiast wait.

Whatever, it isn't for sale, it isn't ready and there is still a distrurbing lack of new information. We still haven't even seen a final product yet. For all of those waiting, I sure do hope it's a great card.

Saying that Fermi single-GPU cards "will require more +12V amperage than the OCP (Over Current protection) will allow on a single +12V rail on most of today's multi-rail PSU's!" makes it hard to pin down a number, as there is a lot of variance in what's on the market. If you go by Intel's requirements (240va max per rail), which is the closest thing to a "standard" OCP limit, that means 20a. Exceeding that is nothing new.

Uh, I don't see where on that xbit sheet they show the 4870x2 pulling more than 20A on either of the 2 rails, if I'm reading that right.

The comment was in regard to the standard of 20A max for a rail. Yes, there are those who go over that. You don't really see that though until the high watt output units. As such, many 650 watt psu don't provide more than 20A max for each rail, if they are multi.

All this though, is in fact Fermi will pull those kinds of numbers. I would suspect that would only really happen when a program allows the card to fly in fps or in something like Furmark. Although, those PCIe connectors in that picture did have a few extra wires for the PCIe connectors.

Ditto.

And the only time I've suposedly seen a Fermi working was in that CES video where the demo crashes in the end..

Could it be possible that nVidia screwed up the production line twice in a row (first the cancelled GT212 and now Fermi)?
One thing is for sure, they can't cancel Fermi now, they got so deep into the media that cancelling would blast all the executives out of that company.

C'mon, it's 2010! We were supposed to have at least a 3 party competition here! Intel cancelled, nVidia cancelled a year ago and now it's late. It's late for that product they shouldn't be late for, because they cancelled a whole line-up in order to get this one on time.. But nevertheless.. it's late.

WTH nVidia? Less media and PR money, more R&D money? More money to those who actually build GPUs and code drivers and less money to those who make foot massages to developers?

why on earth should we wait for fermi? Its 3-6 months away, anyone buying a card now will only care about... *drumroll* cards that are out now.

please tell me who had an insult and edited their post? mods can see all edits.

Please relax paulieg is gonna start banning people if u don't chill..

Anyway, with all the gpu cooling solutions I don't mind the 4xx series running a little hot. By the time fermi is released companies will have more efficient water cooling gpu options anyway :rockout:

Excuse me? I'm a moderator here too. The only one going to get banned is you, for trolling. I'm cleaning this thread up now.

edit: thread has been cleaned. Any more trolling from this post on, will not results in a pleasant aftertaste.

This thread is about Fermi: not about physx, not about how you think nvidia is superior in every way.

So back on topic. Rumor from the Fud man himself:

Nvidia partners should be able to showcase the upcoming Fermi-based Geforce GTX 480 graphics card at Cebit, but we doubt that this will be the time for the official card launch.

Nvidia's DirectX 11 architecture, codenamed Fermi, comes some six months after the first Radeon HD 5000-series card hit the market and in the past six months, ATI has managed to launch an entire DirectX 11 generation including the HD 57x0 series, the HD 56x0 series and most recently the HD 54x0 series.

Nvidia has delayed its Fermi generation for unknown reasons, and the company does not want to discuss it at this time. However, the company does plan to finally launch its long-anticipated, single-GPU, next-generation cards in March. Despite Nvidia’s promise to have healthy availability at launch, we are quite sure that the products will be in short supply from its launch.

VR-Zone links the article in their news and suggests:
A cheaper, cut down GF100 based GPU, the Geforce GTX 470, is scheduled to be launched alongwith the Geforce GTX 480. Details about the GTX 470 are sparse, though consensus rumours suggest 448 shaders and 320 bit memory, crippled from GTX 480's 512 shaders and 384 bit memory interface.

With all do respect sir , I'm not the only one in this thread going a little off topic but I'll stop now and get back on topic.
