The GTX 480/470 performance thread

From all the DX11 reviews I saw it seemed that the 480 got brought down really close to the 5870, but it was still always ahead by a few frames, and in the DX10 mode for those same games it would have a big lead. Also worth considering - I find nvidia drivers to be a bit more consistent... and I personally just like the interface better.

To tell you the real truth guys the gtx 480 was not that monster i was thinking and sites were talking about :(
Anyway if the price was lower than that..... would be perfect. Nvidia is still pretending too much for what ati has to offer at a lower price.

I have been quite disappointed in ATI drivers for about a year and a half now. Just so damn buggy and inconsistent. They were rock stable before that.

I hear 10.3 gets them back on track tho.

Never liked the nV interface personally, but, other than the recent overheat hiccup, they have been better, more stable releases.

I'm puling my hair out, it's such a tough call. lol.

Ok, my question, 480 or 5870? Power consumption and heat are absolutely non-issues for me, as I have a 1250w psu, and I water cool. I do quite like some of the available CUDA apps as well, but they aren't 100% necessary.

I'm guessing I can get my MCW-60 to fit.

The 5870 is $80 cheaper tho. Is the 480 worth $80 more? (Provided I can come up with it to begin with. lol.)

GTX 480 with it's unisink on stock would be a breeze to watercool. I'd go for it just based on that. With HD 5870 you have to count something for ram/vrm-sinks (even if you happen to have them ready).

Unfortunately I don't think either camp will drop prices, all the cards seem to be priced right for the performance, compared to each other at least. Too bad you didn't get a 5870 at launch when they were $380.

ATI driver buggy? Never had problems from what I remember.
I will either get a nother HD 5770 for crossfire or give the one I have to the wify and buy a HD 5870, but price need to go down first. Nvidia 480 performance not all that great and runs too hot anyway.

Crossfire is when I started having the most issues. Iirc, 8.10 or 8.11 was the last fully bug free release I had.

yeah you right, but my brother also used my PC. Some time i not turn off if i downloading something.

You'd better get yourself a nettop/netbook or something saves a lot electricity if you really care.

I keep seeing people commenting on how Charlie Demerijan will be like all 'I was soo right!'.

But that's missing the point entirely. He was 100% right. The card he said could not be made (now) was a 512 core monster. NV scrapped that because as CD had predicted from his sources - it couldn't be made on 40nm.

Even the tamed down beast he never talked about initially is a power hungry beast. Considering this 'competitor' to the 5870 draws more power than ATI's dual 5970 at load, this card is exactly what CD predicted.

And again we're missing the point. I seriously wanted this card back in September 09. I read the reviews and rumours and lo and behold it was 'half a year late'. You'd expect with that much time it'd be refined. But it wasn't.

Who in their right mind wants a single GPU card that runs near 100 degrees under load? A single card!! Also, these little twits that talk about getting them sli'd. Why? Get one yes, but two? Not required and most likely not paying the electric bills.

The GF100 is a brilliant idea and I hope ATI develop their architecture for their next cards. The desktop derivative GTX480/470 is not a good product though. It doesn't matter that it wins in performance - sometimes impressively - it's not a competitior to the 5870. It's an idea of power gone wrong and pursued with zeal by a very silly man (JSH).

May their next card be as technologically advanced but better designed. I really hope for that.

I just read GURU3D's review. Boy, he's well paid in green. His decibel level was 43 ans said power draw was 250Watt. Come on W1zzard, i challenge you to call him a liar!!
(and FTR, I've read, TPU, Hexus, Anand, Hothardware and Harware Canucks and they all have similar opinions. Just Guru saying oppposite and even Fuad said this 'but the actual card leaves much to be desired').....

Its ridiculous that nVidia didnt make these PCI-Ex 3.0 and 4-way SLI compatible also.

We all knew it was going to be a powerful card, we all knew it was going to be hot and power hungry, we knew it was going to have DX11, Cuda, PhysX etc.... why no new features like PCIe 3.0 and 4-way SLI??

EVGA proved that 4-way SLI is useful, and easy to do (If a little expensive) and more and more motherboards are being released with plenty of PCI-E slots to accomodate it.

I know PCIe 3.0 isnt a fully released spec yet, but if nVidia had presented interest in it, I'm sure it would have become a standard fairly quickly...

The length of time we waited for this card to come out isnt fair - these cards are not exactly revolutionary.

On pci-e 3 read w1zzards' review of pci-e scaling with fermi - the bandwidth isn't needed.

As for quad SLi nvidia have said that you should leave 2 slots between cards (due to the heat damaging the cards if they are too close) - that means quad SLi would be impossible without using pci-e extension cables and possibly a second case, so it's really a non-starter.

I would say just buy 5870's wille, im in nearly the same boat as you, got a 1250 watt psu and waited, thinking about buying a 5970 because at under 1v on its core ovevolting fermi with near 100C temperatures might be hard even on water which I was planning to run 2 of them on( I can't even run 3 because it will limit my overclock), if a vendor made one with a better heatsink I would buy but the original heatsink is already good.

The bandwidth might not be needed, but think about it - half of our communities computers are far too powerful. Its not a case of need, its a case of want.

In fairness, the cards should have been designed differently if thats the case. They are far too hot, it's ridiculous. If upping the TDP and heat is the only way nVidia can make better cards, then I'm going to move to ATI.

Ofcourse semiaccurate and fudzilla are usually right , they aren't like some news company spiting out BS like IGN , it's run by one man and his view on the situation , he runs the site and it's not like a company hiring a news poster , it's also a more private , not like other sites who are owned by some large media conglomerates.

Althought it might SOUND like a big pile of bs , but it's truth , and that's someting people don't want to believe ofcourse they obey what they were tricked in , and it's no big news that the master of fraud, bribery, false advertising and lying is nvidia, a corporate capitalist strategy that makes 50% of it's sales.

He's critical to everytihing , and that's anothey way to "what really happened"

The truth always hurts and it's hurting the people who don't believe it the most

However I seen sometimes these sites go over the top , and they stated what was a rumor but okay they corrected their self after that

AND yeah , 3DGURU reviews sux , I say this loud and clear , I was there 2 years ago , I just commented on something da hilbert dolar hilberton said in the review , it's was the times of somewhat 4870 series were coming and they overemphaised the fact that ONLY WAY BECAUSE ati was on top of some gtx card , because of the last minute catalysts and if it weren't been for those catalysts gtx would be the super duper winner(they kept hinting) , and they keept saying this like 10 times again in the review "..without the Catalysts, gtx would .." "just cause the last minute drivers" just and that and just blablabla. This is just one example out of many actually

so I was like 1 step from being banned cause I (very politely, not a rant) mentioned that on forums and the GURU guys came and said that the hilberton works like for 10 years in this "business" and the guys were following him for many years and he helped them with buying decisions and this and that , and that I was insulting him in vast proportion cause I challenged the wisdom in his reviews. I would had to reply: "super cool story bro"

EDIT:

Epic Evga forum thread post , Probably nothing more helps, the guy is completely under the influence.
Fact

1)I don't want the GTX 480 To Fail, Read OP and Topic
2)I have spent thousands of dollars on Nvidia products
3)I have bought 3D T.V's, 3d Vision Kit's and supported Nvidia ALL THE WAY!!
4)I still will support Nviida until they give me a reason not to......
5)The fact that the GTX 480 could flop.......... IS a reason for concern (when possibly spending $600.00 USD)
6)You guys calling people Trolls is stupid and pointless without acting like a consumer- GROW UP!!!!!!
7)If a company can't perform, it would be dumb to throw your money in an endless pit
8)This Forum will be Useless (And I hope it will be) if the GTX 480 Rocks!!!!
9)I hope that the GTX 480 SMOKES the 5870 and gives the 5970 a run for it's money

100% Fanboy example // he states these are "facts" , what an ... , well too many to list.

You're serious? Well your username might prove it lol :p
JK

But honestly, 4 way SLI = 4 cards reaching 96 degrees while gaming :wtf: will result in this:

Its kinda my point. nVidia SHOULD have designed the cards better so that they werent that hot, so that it would be possible to use 4-way SLI.

Fat chance of EVGA releasing a 4-way SLI Classified GTX480, thanks to nVidias stupid ideas about temperature. :banghead:

There is some headroom for driver improvements, but overall, the new GeForce cards are dissapointing. Sure they are slightly faster, but they also heat more, they are noisy, eat tons of electricity and cost more. Oh and yoou can't buy one because there isn't one in stock.
How crappy can it be? Where are the days when we got a proper GeForce cards in our hands and then we were all cheerful for next month or so throwing everything possible at them and look pretty numbers and nice graphics. It's just not happening anymore. WHY NVDIA, WHY!?!??!?!?

Semiaccurate and fudzilla are wrong more than they are right. Not to mention, they are just annoying assholes anyway. Nobody in their right mind cares what they have to say, right or wrong notwithstanding.

Well, heatsink design is not a concern for me. This would be run watercooled on a 3x120 GTX style rad.

The hardest part tho, is the fact that I really like some CUDA stuff, but I really like the power savings of the ATI cards for the slight loss of performance. The power draw of the GTX's are just so crazy, I don't know what to do.

Maybe I should just wait for a refresh or die shrink or something.

Does anyone know if fermi can do a perfect circle with AF like the 5xxx series? I usually check that out at tech report but they don't have a fermi review for some reason.
