You know it occurs to me the 470 GTX is just as big a fail. Unlike with the 260/280 relationship you can't overclock a 470 to be faster than a stock 480, at least on air cooling, where as you could with a 260. It's just as hot if not hotter due to it getting a gimped heatsink... Add in the fact that a $300 5850 can be overclocked to 5870 performance, meaning a 5850 could beat a 480 in crysis despite the $200 price difference... and overall you'd only be 10% slower than a 480 with that oc'd 5850... Then consider you will never notice that 10% difference as that's all in games you're already getting over 100 fps in... It kinda makes nvidia look pointless this round.

....and yet I'm still going to be picking up one of those non-reference Palit 480s :banghead:

Doesn't matter. It's a single card. That's all that matters. It plugs into a single PCIe 16x slot and physically takes the space of 2 slots, just like fermi.

:shadedshu Wow, this one gets old. nVidia DOES NOT make games run like crap on ATI hardware. Not even ATI claims that BS. These are, and always have been, unsubstantiated claims by ATI fanboys. Don't you think ATI would have them in court by now if that were truly the case? nVidia helps devs optimize, yes, but ATI has the same opportunities to do so, and chooses not to on most occasions.

Although, I hear ATI has finally started rolling out their own answer to TWIMTBP, and it's about damn time too. It's been how many years that they've continued to let nV have that advantage over them?

Maybe because canadians are more friendly than american capitalists := ?

And it wouldn't be weird if we would get some of a similar smell in the morning again.

Catalyst 10.3 has stereo 3d option. Anyone test it?

The CEO don't give enough time to the engineers, that is the problem.

GTX480/470 like FX5800, it loud, it hot and a failure.
I have to agree, the CEO is to blame for all of Fermi's faults. From what I read way back NVIDIA's CEO was not fully cooperating with the CTO which was telling him we have issues, and that we should take Fermi into a different path. Well we all know what the CEO did and now we have something that is hot, power hungry and can't even render my fu**ing balls let alone a video game :rolleyes:

Not sure if I fully agree with this but anything is possible:

Do 4xx and 5xxx series cards still suffer from that multi-gpu stuttering crap? Heard one site saying the frame rate increase is totally negated by the micro stuttering.

As far as I'm concerned, microstutter was confined to 3870x2.

yeah pretty much 3870x2 and down... I could ever really afford SLI with the 260 series, and damn, is it awesome - no micro-stutter at all.

If you compare overall scaling I would say SLI does a little better IMO. But Crossfire came a long way and have greatly improved. I am really hoping there next gen greatly improves in crossfire. But alot has to do with drivers and it seems NVIDIA's are a little more mature in the Dual-GPU department.

all i can say is look at furmark load lol 5870s pull 600 watts the gtx480s pull 851 watts :roll:

now we all know a 5850 can overclock past a 5870 and use less power so..... roughly 465 watts would be around the 5850 crossfire power consumption so overclocked 5850s pull 500watts is my guess for performance within striking distance of the gtx480 at 850 watts think on those figures a sec thats almost dbl the power consumption and 2 5850s will be faster at the same power consumption bracket which is rather nuts.

750 watt PCP&C psu on sale was $99 dbl that for a decent 1000watt unit for safe sli lol im glad i bought the gpus i did at this point. that 10-15% isnt worth the 40-50% more power used period

Nope, not really. Well, a few driver issues/bugs, like you mention, but for the most part it's pretty transparent that you're using a dual gpu card.

Well that was my point in another thread. It seems as though ATI may bring us 2 different GPU's, perhaps one is for Fusion and the other discrete :confused: I would say the fusion would be going with Global Foundries no?

As much as I hate Nvidia, I have to admit that SLI still scale a lot better than crossfire, even if crossfire came a long way since its inception.

How do you explain this then

@ 1680x1050
480 SLI -- 60.2:40.7 --> 1.48
5870 CF -- 53.8:30.5 --> 1.76 (higher is better)

@ 1920x1200
480 SLI -- 54.5:33.4 --> 1.63
