Ever since the 9 series prices with nvidia have been fucked up.

It's always been like that here latin america, at least in my country, I remeber when i worked for PC2000, one of the largest of pc parts distributors here, you had to a bonus for an Nvidia product inferior to ati, like a ddr2 8600gt 87$ or a 7800GT 400$ vs a ddr3 HD4650 at 56$, that said I remember when I wanted a card for under 100$ from newegg the Sapphire HD4830 was 89$ an Nvidias closest offering was a Sparkle 9600gt at 95$ or 80$ after MIR, Nvidia has always charged a bit more for equal, less or a bit more performance, the only time it actually had the price performance crown was with the 8800GTS 320 and later with 8800GT(great cards in their era)

On topic: Im waiting the nvidia pushes prices down with this card, let's hope it rocks Ati's price/performance.

While that is probably true, the HD5830 sales would likely cut into the HD5850/70 sales if priced lower. But why even releaes the product if that was the case? Why not just leave the HD5770 to defend that performance segment?

True, although I think we all know why 5830 exists: They probably consist of the oldest RV870 chips from when TSMC was really sucking it on 40nm. Realistically speaking, with HD6K so close around the corner, they had to pump out the derivatives a bit faster than in the HD4K generation. They decided to sell the chips quick while they didn't (until recently) have any competition.

I agree though, the price is atrocious, and HD5770 really is the better card, all factors considered.

I don't see how this could compete with the 5850. The GTX470 only barely manages to edge off the 5850 in real world tests and that is if you ignore power and heat. In the real world the 5850 is still the best card bang-for-buck-for-power-consumption.

I can't see this card being competitive enough against the 5850. Maybe the 5830 but that card makes no sense to me. Sure it might be a good card but the only reason I'd ever buy it would be just to get CUDA but that is slowly becoming less attractive these days.

Wouldnt doubt if better versions of 5830 Arrive or even the Second Gen 5800 Series appear

The performance of GTX460 will fall between HD5830 and HD5850. In fact 460 will use GF100, then I’d expect a performance closer to 5850 due to nVidia’s drivers optimizations in the following months. The problem I find with 5830 is the ROP’s count of 16 which is somehow bottlenecking. I doubt the appearance of a HD5840 so I’d think of a price reduction for 5850.

The same thing happens in my country... a retailer store right now is selling a GTX285 for (grab your seat) US$475!!!!!! but at the same time other store is selling a HD5850 for $375. And believe me, there'll be a ***** dude that's gonna buy the 285 because and just because (grab your seat again) is nVidia... maybe that's why we are underdeveloped after all

It doesnt look longer than in america, i dont care, ati's prices are right, always compared to how they are in usa, where they compete with nvidia.

The 285 is still more expensive than 5870 in norway.

Nah the new cards are being sold here still anyway. It's just that Nvidia cards are awfully infamous for being mostly immune to price drops over here. A GTS 250 can be more expensive than a HD 4870

Actually I can get a ticket from Honduras(Home country) to Miami for 200$ or less buy a 5770 in Tigerdirect 180$ and, It's still cheaper than a 400$ 7800GT or a 670$ 8800Ultra

maybe, but i doubt it. We all thought the same when the GTX 480/70 came out but AMD didn't lower prices at all. I'm pretty comfortable in saying that the GTX 460 will be between the HD 5830/50 performance wise(probly closer to 5850) and its price correspond to it. As long as its priced in between the 5830/50 i don't see AMD lowering prices.

If there's pool I'd vote for hardware optimizations and driver tweaks , but it might sound like smart-ssing now when gtx460 is already released

In fact gf104 continues to be a great breeze of fresh air continuing delivering great performance in mainstream like g94 was 9600gt against older g92 that has twice as much shading power. And if we put into equation that gf100 was underperforming chip and gtx470 was 7/8 of full product and perform much better than burning gtx480 (7.5/8 of full gf100) we see that hitting close to gtx470 with only 75% SPs of that in gtx470 but that can squeeze out more with much less leakage that might be the reason why gf104 and future product gtx475 (based on 100% working chip) is much better solution.

btw. nVidia is famous for it's "driver optimizations" or tweak'n'cheat approach and to hell with it it would be ok if we dont saw all that tesselation improvements and which otoh cause some frame drops. The only bad thing is that flucking nVidia canceled gt200b production when they released their cardboardware fermi g300 chip last October (2009).

And bad thing could be if ATI wouldn't play price reduction game and let nVida sale their gtx460 cards (as they do now) much higher than nV announced MSRP of 200 USD for 768MB and 220USD for 1024MB version
