10GHz processors in 2011

we moved to multiple cores/thraeds instead of more GHz and to more efficient designs so yeah... MHz/GHz is no longer the key factor to performance.

Well I mean the P4 has reached 10ghz, but really, it is not that great. GHZ means nothing really, just a number at this point, where higher is not actually better.

P4 has only hit I think 8821Mhz, and the PII's are closing in on that with multicores.

Yup, Pentium 4 HT 570J, Pentium 4 HT 571, Pentium 4 HT 670, and Pentium 4 HT 672 were all 3.8 GHz, the highest Intel ever reached.

my guess is the next big targets are minimal power at idle (<20W even for a 6 core), the ability to swap between onboard and dedicated GPU's on the fly, and PRAM - instant on systems that lose no data when powered off.

well I think intel could have developed a single-core 10Ghz processor not dual/quad/hexa cores ... die shrinks do help a lot in having higher clock speeds ... if a pentium 4 processor is manufactured now using 45nm/32nm I think it might clock more than 10GHz ...

its more complicated than that.

Mhz is a measurement of time, so think of it like a clock. you make it go faster and faster, and sooner or later its gunna lose stability and fall apart.

netburst was designed for high clocks, but at the cost of performance per clock. it WASTED its clock cycles whenever something wasnt optimised for its architecture (read: most stuff).


high performance per clock is where its at, and it should stay that way.

I want an ability to OC each core individually, so 4 cores might read 3Ghz, 4.2Ghz, 3.8Ghz and 4.6Ghz. This is going to be rather hard to implement though, but they are moving towards that direction by introducing turbo (insert trademark name here).

Screenie? I never seen anyone clock their cores differently, almost all the time its alltogether or they disable some cores.

cause no software can read them yet

look up phenomMSRTweaker, works on PII chips/AII chips and gives you individual core multiplier control.

seriously, If we went the way of 10Ghz P4's and 10Ghz Pentium D's AMD would have killed intel off by now probably, even a E2140(the slowest core cpu) beats a Pentium D at double its clock sometimes,

I don't even want to imagine using a 10Ghz P4.

and 128Ghz cpu's . . . . . . . well . . . . . . . . . don even know what to say.
