I was 'so waiting for Fermi' but got bored waiting. I think any dual NV gpu will be less than exciting. If you want dual gpu, buy two 470's or heaven forbid, two 480's. Or if these cards turn out to be any good, two of these. Dual cards aren't always better (often a bit worse) than crossfire or sli solutions. Only real reason for dual card is mobo or case but if you're buying a high end dual gpu solution you probably have a big case and a good mobo.

So this is what Fermi looks like before they ruin it by putting a Fermi on it. Well, I can tell you what this will be: fail. Seriously, stop making more rubbish SKUs that are more expensive and way more powerful (as in TDP, not performance) than the ATI equivalent (in this case it would be the 5970). We don't want more powerful cards anymore because a GTX480 is powerful enough to run anything. Heck, a GTX470 is powerful to run anything. What we want is a die shrink. Tell TSMC to get off their a**es and make a 32nm Fermi.

When NVIDIA does that, then let me know and then I might start paying interest in it.

The 8800 Ultra was $1000....

I had paid 870 euros for an EVGA 8800 Ultra in his glorious last year of life before the 9000 (flop series) came out, im serious no joke. ( I have the pics of unboxoing )


The 8800 Ultra has the strongest thing of 384bit frontside bus kicked all Ati cards coming out at that time.


He accompanied me in many games and never had made me disappointed, still today when I see it for sale at auction sales there is always a queue of offers.

2x 8 pin Plugs on a GF100 and know i dont think there going to go back to the ultra heat sink

if this card is the GTX 485 it would have to be watercooled or some crazy cooling to keep the temps down

if this is going against the HD6870 then I don't think things are looking good for NV, the gap between a 480 and a 5870 is only like 15-20%(and im being generous) on average, and the gap AMD made with the 4870 and 5870 is pretty big, If they manage that again with the 5870 to 6870, nvidia is screwed, but nvidia has time to recoop, they better use it wisely

If what comes out from ati this winter is a 6xxx series then that's a waste of a naming scheme. It will still be on 40nm so the performance increase won't be that huge.

I dont think the 5890 is coming. The 5xxx series has so many cards, so i think the 5xxx series line is over.

September 2009 5-series came to life. It hasn't even been a year. At the end of this year, it won't even be 18 months.

There is room for Cypress to grow, if the chips get better. But they need to maek current designs a profit before they release next gen, so, at this point, a refresh seems most likely.

Thing is though, it's not needed, at this point. Every chip sold can make the next chip a wee bit cheaper.

Now, if ATi gets good silicon, nVidia will as well. Then the story might change.

At the same time, TSMC needs to make thier foundry pull a profit before they can change things. I truly think this is why 32nm is not expected...they need extra time to pull a profit, so that's the only viable solution.


This is why things like this PCB in the OP are important. For the time being, the best we can hope for is improvements at that level, which can either give us more performance, or lower cost.


Personally, I think this PCB here greatly resembles MSI's Lightning series, without the extra goodies. But the Lightning series fails to really improve anything, that I have seen. Maybe I've missed something, but with this one at least, I think it does look very clean...

The 4870 and the 3870 are both on 55nm and the performance increase was huge in every way.
