Official AMD Radeon 6000 Series Discussion Thread

That's what gets me. Months ago, Dirk Meyer said that the 5 series was getting a refresh. This never came to be. If it was going to be just a refresh they would of kept it the 5 series (5890 and what have you). Apparently what they are working on is too much to be considered a refresh so here comes the 6 series. Now the 4890 was 10-15% better performing than the 4870, so I'm thinking the 6 series will be more than 20% better than the 5 series (5870 ~ 6870). Who knows how much better really, but at the low end I'm guessing better than 20%.

If this is true (20% performance boost between 5870 and 6870) and the price is reasonable (under $450); then I'll go for it with my eyes closed.

idk I picked up a gtx295 ftw edition for 250$ a month ago, granted I sold it for 450$ 2 weeks afgter getting it, but if you consider that card was 11 months old (single pcb 295) all you have to do is have a dual 6k series card at the same price as the 5970 and a single 6k that performas the same or better at the 5870's price point and people will flock to the new gen, flooding the market with 5970's for cheap so they can get 6k series cards.

i'd give it 2-3 months after the 6k series is out and you'll be at 200$ for a used 5970.

Maybe used but you won't be able to buy brand new for that price for a long time. And as most people say that the 6xxx series is a refresh of the 5xxx series, there might not be a very huge leap from the 5970 to 6970. And the HD 5970 is a very powerful card. In 2-3 months if you can get a used 5970 for $200, you should be able to get a GTX 480 for $100 in 2-3 months. And Gtx 460 for about $50. But no, that's not how it works. Even now, a brand new 4870X2 is about $400. And a used one can be probably still sold between $250-$350. But unlike that the HD 5970 (which has DX11) won't get outdated. And i can bet you that it will be $400+ till the 7xxx series is out. And you wont be be able to get a used one, unless its broken or damaged for $200 in 2-3 months or even an year after the 6k series is out.

im not totally convinced that their will be a 6970 or twin PCB card this time around, as i expect these cards TDP to be 10-20% higher (same nm, small efficiency gain) and performance 20-40% better (from the new info i've gathered) i don't know if they can pull off dual PCB, therefore 5970, may still have a respectable performance comparison, hence less price drop, i do think you'll be able to pick them up under 400-350 within 4-8 months though, $200 is probably more like next ati or nvidia release away

link?? most that I've seen starting all the way before a refresh of the 5xxx series was beign talked about state the 6k is new arch and the the 5k was the last refresh of the r600 style architecture.

if we're talking a 12 month old card it would be the first time in ati and nvidia history that a refresh launches for it.

I think refresh would be pointless right now and that the 6k is a new arch especially being that new series names start development several years before they are launched so for this to be a refresh ati would have to have predicted that nvidia's answer to their 5k series was a failure and that a mere refresh of the 5xxx would warrant a new series name. we've had rumors of the 6k series since even before the 5k series launched, I've said it before and I'll say it again a refresh is VERY unlikely.

It has already been confirmd a dual chip graphics card based on HD 6870 is coming out. The high performance is going to surprise people once thy get these cards out.

I was just referring to the other members in TPU who are saying that the 6xxx series is just a polished version of the 5xxx series and who are saying that its a refresh. I don't have a link but if you read some of the HD 6xxx threads, you will come across their opinions.

thats what people said about the 5000 series, and altought ATi did very well and Nvidia did lose some market share, i doubt they will be "crushed like a little girly man" or peeing themselves any time soon. worried perhaps, but don't let your imagination get the better of you, the gfx card world would be a terrible terrible place if it were a monopoly.

GF104 is more of a weapon that it seems, soo much more potential in single and dual gpu (single card) form.

nevertheless, I eagerly await benchmarks, especially if that taste in the GPU-Z forum is anything to go by... 850mhz core clock, 6400mhz effective memory clock, X12k in vantage on beta drivers... yum yum

... I totally agree; although nVidia have definitely made some wrong choices trying in more than one occasion to monopolize the market then failed drastically, but never underestimate the green camp. The GF104 (GTX460) have demonstrated that nVIdia can't be ruled out just now, although it'll take them some time to catch up with AMD/ATI in power efficiency and heat generation ... a GPU market monopoly is bad for gamers ...

And can be bad for the companies too. A company in a monopoly position rests on its laurels and then gets slaughtered. Think what AMD did with the Athlon XP, then got slaughtered by the Core2 series. Think about 3DFx...if you are old enough. Think about the HD4000 series, then came the GTX series to romp on it.

nVidia still haven't beaten the HD 5970. I don't know how they are going to compete with the HD 6xxx series. The GF104 is good but won't come even close to the high end models in the HD 6xxx series.

not with a single card at least... however GTX460 SLi comes very close to one (if not pretty much on par), and like I said there is quite obviously way more performance to squeeze out of that GPU in terms of clockspeeds (both core and memory) and they havent even enabled all of the SP's on die.

you'd be surprised how well dual GTX480 gives dual HD5970 a run for its money too.

I will however digress ATi seems to be months ahead of nvidia still, but they know they screwed up pooch, and I for one hope they have a good plan.

I am old enough and I once was a proud owner of a 3Dfx VooDoo 3, and felt sorry for them when they crashed. You're right, a monopoly might turn out as a bad thing for companies as well, although it's a rare opportunity to make a lot of money.

Don't forget that the 5970 is a dual GPU card, and that nVidia didn't yet release their anticipated dual GPU card based on GF104 (expected to be GTX490/495). Furthermore, nVidia are kings of the hill in single GPU performance with their GTX480 (at least until AMD/ATI's Southern Islands GPUs are released). I say the upcoming months will be very interesting in the GPU market.

the upcoming months will not be interesting, there will be a clear winner : ATI, even if nvidia releases the dual gpu thing based on the GF104 it will outperform the 5970 by a very small margin, you can look to gtx 460 sli reviews. the 6870 will have i think a performance between those of the gtx 480 and the 5970 and a dual gpu card will just destroy nvidia, this will be a win in all the segments.

I'd really like to see nvidia's answer to this one. I reckon just enabling the missing cluster in the GTX 480 won't be enough to close the performance gap and we know how power hungry the Fermi chip is already...
