Ok, so I'm overrating a bit...
Wonderful review. I would consider this one if the cooling was more elaborate, because paying so much just for a special selection and higher clocks doesn't add up to me. But that's just me, others are surely going to approve...

In the "standard review" there are two blocks of common text.

NVIDIA offers two variants of the GeForce GTX 460, one with 768 MB of GDDR5 memory and one with 1 GB. Due to the GPU architecture this change in memory size not only affects the actual memory but also other performance relevant figures. The reduction of memory size is achieved by installing less memory chips on the card which reduces the bus width of the GPU from 256-bit to 192-bit on the 768 MB version. Since the ROPs are coupled to the memory interface this also results in less ROP units. Combined all those changes reduce the fillrates and memory performance of the card by 25%.

1 GB VRAM does not make a substantial difference over 768 MB

Which one is it?

Perhaps they are both true? (Depending on your screen resolution). Clarification and consistency would be much appreciated

They are both true. The reduced memory, bus width, and ROPs means a 25% drop in fillrate and memory bandwidth. This does not mean an actual 25% drop in performance of the card, because fillrate and memory bandwidth don't seem to make a huge difference with these cards.

yep both true.

if you look at relative performance you see that 768 mb is slower than 1 gb (not because of the memory size but because of the architectural difference, first para you quoted).
if you look at performance per dollar you see that 768 mb is better because the difference in performance can not make up for the price difference

wow very interesting to see TGT's process here, binning the cards is such a good idea and this one doesnt dissapoint.

you say that you did not increase voltage at all, does this mean that, like most reference boards, you couldhave further raised the voltage to try and get higher clockspeeds?

they test a lot of cards and pick out the best ones.

imagine you went to a shop and took 100 cards home with you. there sure would be some golden overclockers, no ?

I get 840mhz on my core... on my GTX 460 ... I've not tried for anything more (yet), I was being silly at the time and playing mainly with my memory speed

I could always do a bench if you wan't pic's for proof?

I love these 460's mine was only $200 and it OC's very nicely. This card (the one in the review) would be great for those who know nothing about over clocking, but want that extra kick (as long as they are willing to pay the extra $$).

for example Nvidia makes GF100 cores, they are tested and binned so that the best ones (so far) will become GTX480's, the lesser ones, or perhaps with a defective portion, will become GTX470's, and so on.

what TGT are doing is taking a butload of GTX460's and overclocking them to find which will be rock stable at the advertised core speeds of 855mhz, chances are this isn't a large percentage.

Oh no i get they are getting the best overclockers out of them all after testing them, what I dont get is that every single GTX460 ive ever seen can reach 850 core stable (except maybe one - tech2's) but as he said he hasnt tried getting there without modding the memory, i bet it will do it.

My problem is they ALL go over 800 core, even 850, its not a special thing, thats just gtx460s, yet they do what we would and charge $50 more.
