Unable to update driver for ATI graphic card

I'm almost to the point of insanity with this. I have no idea how I can explain this coherently.

My current drivers are quite out of date, and so I finally figured I go through the task (yes, I always encounter SOME issue when updating) of updatin them. So, I go to the ATI site, put my card info in, and get the download suite containing all the updated stuff. Here comes the problem. I can't even use any of it!

You see, I can download the package onto my desktop, and upon clicking it, it prompts me to pick a location for the download. I use the default "C:/ATI/Support" file, and it seems to download it all in there correctly. Then, well, thats it. Thats all it does. It automatically closes the download window, and I am left with nothing. I can go investigate the ATI/Support file, and see all the downloaded goodies, all of which are useless to me. I am at a loss.

Here is where CIM (Catalyst Install Manager) comes in. If I click any of the items in the file, it gives me an error saying "Failed to access Catalyst Install Manager engine. Please ensure that no other instances of Catalyst Install Manager are currently running". This confuses me greatly, becuase I did have not witnessed the CIM running to begin with. What also leads me to believe CIM is the issue, is that CIM does not appear in my Add or Remove programs list.

The gist of it is, I can't even begin to update my driver, much less anything else becuase nothing pops up.

Please, please if anyone knows why this is happening, and better yet, how to fix it I would REALLY appreciate the advice. I am struck dumb by this, and Googling it brings me no answers.

Welcome to TPU!

Sorry to hear about your problems but it's pretty common and I'm betting you'll have it working very soon.

Chances are you haven't properly removed a previous verson of CCC/driver. Please reference:
How To: Reinstall Video Drivers (Quick Guide)

When you extracte CCC/driver package it will create a folder like the following (assuming you have win7/vista 64 bit or the folder name will be slightly different):
Code:
C:\ATI\Support\10-11_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_enu
Look for a file in that directory called "setup.exe" and launch it. That will begin the installer.

If you fill out your system system specs it may be easier to help you.

Anubis when you are looking at the goodies in ATI/Support there should be a file named setup.exe. If you run that file (double click left mouse or right click mouse then open) it should start the Catalyst Install Manager. If you get that far you will be asked to do an express install or custom. Be sure to choose custom. There are a couple of things you will not want to install. There usually is a free game trial and a ATI feedback option selected. Unselect them and keep whatever else is selected by default. Hope this helps.

@StreetFighter - I think I like your answer better than mine! :toast:

or if you do these things and you still got error, may be you need to uninstall the previous driver, restart them and run the setup again
hope it works :D

+1 absolutely. This will very likely cause this problem. SP2 isn't even supported by Microsoft anymore.

You then need to run Microsoft Update and put on all the latest Windows patches, of which there's a great many.

Makes sure to put on all the critical updates and .NET 2 & 3.5x. Miss out .NET 4.0 though, as it can be problematic. The CCC needs at least .NET 2 to operate at all.

You need to keep all of your software up to date, not just the drivers, otherwise, your Windows will stop working properly over time.

Microsoft Update: www.windowsupdate.com and make sure you let Update install the latest version of itself. It will ask you this first and you won't get any further without this initial update.

Just got internet back earlier today, so I've just tried out these suggestions, namely the SP 3 one.

Unfortunately, the three times I've attempted downloading it, it gave me a "Access is denied" error and cancelled itself! Just my luck.

I will try to fix this so I can hopefully continue the update. I have a feeling my old Bitdefender anti-virus program, which wont allow me to uninstall due to my inablitiy to "verify" is source, is the problem. Seems everything on my computer is denying access to me, who ironically is the owner and only user. :(

What do you mean by that access denied error? Do you mean getting it when clicking the download button on the Microsoft website? If so, then it's certainly your BitDefender screwing up. Assuming it's not a pirated copy... I suggest you try posting on the BitDefender forum: http://forum.bitdefender.com to help remove it. All security software should be disabled or uninstalled anyway when installing any Windows service pack.

If it's impossible to remove BitDefender, then I strongly suggest backing up all your data, formatting your hard drive and installing Windows XP from scratch, putting all the critical and important updates on, especially SP3. Once again, leave .NET 4 out though, but install all the other versions and their updates. Believe me, you'll end up with a much smoother and more glitch-free running system after this.

Duh! Good question - wish I'd asked. The implication is that Anubis4545 is running as admin, but we'll have to wait for his reply to know for sure.

Wow, thanks again everyone for the suggestions! :D

I was able to fix my "access denied" problem. SP 3 is now installed, I am going to install any other updates from the Microsoft website. Then finally try again to install the new graphics driver!

The solutions on this thread are what fixed it. http://social.technet.microsoft.com...p/thread/65a0be12-5172-4a8d-8692-3bdeeb209049

Thanks so much everyone, I REALLY appreciate this! I don't think I've ever met so many helpful people before! :)

I installed the new driver. It all seems to of worked okay. Though, (this issue always seems to happen everytime I update) Catalyst Control Center does not work. This is probably an update error on my part that causes this, but my lack of technical know-how prevents me from figuring what I did wrong.

Anyways, I got the driver installed and I feel like I had a cement block lifted off my head!

not sure what version, but you need dotnet installed for CCC to work.
