There should be nothing new coming for several months as the nvidia gtx 5xx and amd 6xxx series came out probably a month ago.

A sli gtx 580 would be a worthwhile investment if you were able to comfortably afford it. I have a single gtx 580 and it is very powerful. The prospect of getting close to double the framerates I get makes me happy for you.

The only card on the planet that is arguably faster than the gtx 580 is the amd 5970. The amd 5970 only gets higher max fps in some games, while the gtx 580 gets higher minimum framerates, which is better in my opinion. What is the use in getting 100 fps in some areas and getting 7 in others? I think it is better to get 60 fps max and 20 fps in the same area the other card was getting 7 in is better.

In the end, this is only my opinion. Do what you please with your money.

Sorry for double post, but keep in mind that this gtx 590 will be two 580s on one board, but the clock speeds will be lower. So an external sli gtx 580 would be slightly faster.

A single 580 beats a 6970, so a dual 580 solution would be faster as well.

Well its mostly just for looks, Etc... And the fact that ill be running a 58 inch plasma in most cases. A single 580 would do the job, its just a second would insure the job gets done. I was looking at the ASUS Ares 5870x2, but didnt want a old gen 5xxx series. Hmmm, I might just get one 580 for now and when the 590 comes get rid of the 580 and get 2 590s. And of course its also the fact of cost for me, and the clean look of two cards and not just a single card with 3 slots of a classified 3 mobo just looking me in the face, For me a 590 would be 650$ at the most? well now a 580 is 500, So a grand if i go with 2? Well if i pay 300 more dollars i get 4 580 gpus, NOT the same as running 4 580s but close correct? So its just simpler to me.

dual 6970s are about 5-8% slower then sli 580s the crossfire scaling on the AMD cards is a bit better negating the single card power difference the 580s have that said the 6970 crossfire setup is also a great deal cheaper at around $300 less and of course

6990 + 6970 = trifire and should scale better then the usual piss poor 4 gpu scaling where the 4th gpu tends to do absolutely nothing. but both 580 sli and 6970 crossfire are pretty potent themselves im runnin Metro 2033 Maxed at 1920x1200 AAA Tessellation on + Direct compute blur shader at 55-60fps.

In general if you want new gpus buy them if you can wait wait but theres always something new just around the corner so if your always waiting your never buying anything either. I can say no matter what gpus you pick performance is going to be fan fucking tastic

You are just giving him pure Nvidia fanboy-ism (a new word?) here mate, the 580 may be faster, but lets not forget it eats more power and puts out s***loads of heat.

The 6 series of ATI is apparently just an updated version of the 5 series of ATI and perform around the same level as nvidia's 5XX for a much much smaller price, consume less power and put out less heat.

you do know screen size doesn't matter right? it is resolution (ie: 1080p or 1920x1080). Therefore, there will be the same performance on a 21.5" 1080p screen and a 58" 1080p. And my 23" 2048x1152 will be MORE demanding then you huge ass plasma. Just a heads up in case you didn't know.

I'd go single 6970, and 6990 later or GTX 580 tri-sli :D

it does not put how much more heat then the 5970. It also doesnt consume that much more power. maybe like 10w. its also quieter

If hes giving out Nvidia Fanboy-ism your putting out AMD FanBoy-ism

The 69xx cards are actually have a completely new architecture but still does not compare to nvidia dx11 card abilities. Also nvidia cards are worth the price i think more since they have more features and more games utilize there cards. they offer physx, cuda, and ussually better drivers

I was providing arguments for the ATi side. And by the reviews Ive seen the 580 is power consuming and hot

Not a very good reason, and better drivers? AMD's drivers are fine as well

yeah now after what 8 driver releases that were awful you a LOT of people

what reviews are you looking at? LinusTechTips made a video of gaming with the 580 and the max it got up to was 65c at stock. thats not very hot seeing how the 480 got to like 90c

They were just improving the drivers, not fixing issues, as we have almost none, and by now, even if we did, there is at least one version that works perfect.

besides, we are talking about drivers now, not in the past. and in general it evens out NV vs AMD.

everybody has to stop taking sides and just help the OP with his problems. If he wanted a single card/GPU then the GTX 580 for sure, if he wants best bang/buck with an extremely powerful setup at the end, it would be 6970 CF or 6970 + 6990. If only a slight thought about money and alot of thought on power, it would be 6990 + 6970 or GTX 580 + GTX 590or GTX 580 tri-sli etc. If he needs CUDA, then obviously NV.

Go with what OP asks you, not with "the side" you are on (NOT an NV vs AMD debate). Hell, he doesn't care which company is better etc, all he wants is the best GPUs that fits his needs.

Random youtube ones... Tributar reviews or something... But not 100 percent sure, I have a bad memory... May have been SLI 580's not single. But they still generate a large amount of heat

I run a single 580 with a slight overclock and it pawns every game i play on max settings @ 1920x1200, only game i have not tried yet is Metro 2033 (as i don't have it) which i think is probably the hardest game to run atm.

i'd wait for 6990. i dont entirely understand the huge jump in need for power since your coming up from a gtx260?

Alright, so I went to sleep last night after I posted, so that is why I was not able to explain further.

I am not an nvidia fanboy, as I owned an x300 and then jumped to a 4870x2. After that died from almost two years of use, I decided to check out the nvidia side and what this physx was all about.

So, I purchased a gtx 580, and you may have heard from reviews that it is loud, hot, and hungry. Let me tell you from my OWN experience that my stock cooled card plays games while overclocked at 900/1100 at beneath 75 C at around 60% fan speed, which is quiet. Ask w1zzard or others who have reviewed the stock cooled cards. I purchased a kill a watt device to measure my power consumption, and while gaming it pushes 560 watts. Keep in mind I also watercooling parts drawing power too.

You or others may say physx is a joke, but from my experience, I have seen nothing like it incorporated in other physics engines. In Mafia 2, the particle interaction with physx is amazing in my opinion. In metro 2033, the physx makes it so that when you shoot the wall, each individual fragment from the wall will cast its own shadow. You may make it seem subtle, but I notice things like that. In games, when something is giving off smoke, don't you think that if you were to put a box in front of it, you could manipulate the smoke? Instead the smoke goes right through it. However, in engines such as the UDK engine, if you added a physx sprite data to a particle emitter such as smoke, you are able to manipulate the smoke in realtime.

ok, enough fanboy talk, if you need physix go to nvdia, but if you need more efficient card go to ATI

to make it fair here is the benchmark from 2XHD6950 CFX :

and here 2X GTX 580 SLI :

so it up to you, if you think the price different is worth it or not, btw you can get power cooler HD6950 PCS+++ for $300 but it have switch that can unlock the card to HD6970 so you can get both for $600

If you want PhysX, by a PhysX card, it would cost you MAX 50$, or just use your gtx260 as a PhysX card.

I'd buy a single high end GPU now and hold onto the rest of the cash for either 1. a fantastic deal on a second card you have to double up, or 2. next generation.

I cant think of many games at all where a GTX580 or 6970 would not be sufficient to run it maxed out @ 1080p, especially with some overclocking in the mix.

sure its great to go over the top (I've been there many times) but it really IS a waste of money that will net you greater (and more importantly more usefull) performance down the track, if spent right.

I am building a high end gaming computer here really soon and i would like to know if the next series of either ATI or Nvidia is coming out any time soon?, If so please let me know so i wont make the choice yet.. Thank you very much :)

define "really soon" as that will make a huge difference in recomendations. "pretty quick here the 590 and 6990 will be out and that should hopefully pull down prices of the single gpu chips. If nothign else it will give you more options.

also will you be overclocking? that will make a huge difference.

Well here in about 3-4 weeks,

Core i7, overclocking to over 4ghz,

4x 4gb Dominator gt 2000mhz sticks,

Evga Classified 3 way sli mobo 3.0 usb edition.

80 gb ssd boot drive, 1tb 7200 storage drive

1200 watt psu, All im missing is what gpus i want to use, I will be running a 24 inch samsung 1ms and then the same moddle 22inch for a secondary monitor. I just dont know yet... one 580 will do the job lols, But two look so good. BUT if i got a card with 2 gpus i would just buy two and go with qaud.

Oh and im not a fanboi and cash isnt really strapped for me. ALONG with the fact that noise and how hot it gets doesnt phase me. Me playing music threw my headphones or surround sounds drones out the noise... So thats just a stupid tidbit i dont care for... I can always watercool it or add a fan solution. Im sure it wont catch on fire as im not running crysis accrosed 50 screens... I just want some bragging rights and to have some fun. ATI is just a little to tame atm for me. They were WAYYY ontop but its kind of making me a little angry that they have not come out with a duel gpu solution since the damn 295...
