Why is it a bad time? THe 1155 boards that have the issues, and even then the problem doesn't affect performance. If thats what you're refering to...

That comment was made prior to the issues discovered with the Sandy Bridge chipset.

Am I making too much of a deal about this?

Maybe...;)

Normally on a build I just put whatever RAM works but this time around I am trying to keep in mind about overclocking and gaming.

4-8GB of 1600mhz CAS8 ram is more than fast enough for what you need, and will be easy to get stable(anything over 1333mhz is an overclock).

Remember when you got that DDr2 kit that was 1066 and you felt like it was the fastest thing on the world? Hell, the first 1200mhz kit I got, I felt nothing could ever do better.. But, there was all ways something out there that was..

But, now we got DDr3.. To which it's not how "high" you get the MHZ, but how well the timmings of the kit run with the system.. Cadaveca, your on the money with 1600 8 would be fast enough for anything. It will be. Now, a day, your getting a higher MHZ, just to "make sure" you got the ocing room with the sticks.. Not that your "Faster" at those speeds.. But, you can be if you set the oc up just right..

They shouldn't be a problem what so ever for your set up. You should be fine with those on the Max board.

Ok I just ordered them, I hope they work hehe

Thanks again for all the help!!!

I will check back after I get them installed to confirm they worked. Now I just need a SSD but I might wait a bit on that.

Yeah, they should have no problems running. My Ripjaw X's are running fine on the Max board.. Yesterday I threw them back into the Gaming set-up.. Soon, i'll probably buy that kit for my Media system.. Don't know yet..

I don't agree. I have run both the Hyper-based 2000 C8 Dominators, as well as the PSC 2133 C9's @ 4x2GB straight up 1T. The 2000C8 managed 2000bclk, but the 2133's require a drop to 178blck, when paired with an i7 cpu. It's just a matter of tweaking VTT to match the speed. Either way, I managed to get both kits stable at defaults speeds, on both the I5 760, and the I7 870, without any problems.

Of course, I tend to push things a bit more than most, but it wasn't very hard. It's just a matter of getting two kits that work well together.

That said, 2x4GB should be just as simple.

Does the speed really matter in the real world though? Maybe a little. Maybe not.

I know it's possible. When I offer suggestions, by default I assume that most people will not push hardware the way I do. Knowing this, I make suggestions on ram thinking that most will not want to push VTT much over 1.35, and many of the higher speed sticks need quite a bit more than that to be stable at rated speeds in a 4x2GB config. That's been my experience at least.

Sure, many others have the same experience too. But each and every one of them was with older chips, not newer ones. 2x 760 and 1x 870, all new-new, 1.35v VTT or less. And guess what...ASUS boards tend to give 1.35v on XMP(which the board in question is), even if the sticks are rated for less(as are my corsairs), and many newer sticks, like the mushkins, have 1.35v VTT as XMP default. Intel's also lowered the max VTT from 1.45v, to 1.4v.

Not quite the same playing field, nowadays. ;)

Hmm. That's good info. I didn't realize the newer 1156 chips allowed for lower VTT. Guess that's where the majority of my experience with 1156 was as an early adopter. I went back to 1366 after playing with a couple of 1156 Gigabyte boards. I've just recently added a Maximus III Formula in a backup rig. Haven't played with it much. Maybe I should if this is true. :D

Yeah, you can run the system at lower Vtt.. my system runs fine at 1.25vtt.. If I'm pushing the old PiS to 6-9-8-21. then I use 1.35vtt due to how tight it is for 2000mhz..

This is the Qant rig.. my Max is settling fine at 1.25 due to not pushing ram.

I just wanted to update everyone, after a weeks worth of testing I ended up just upgrading to the Maximus III Formula b/c the Crossfired ATI cards were getting to hot that close to each other.

Please have a look at the numbers I have running and let me know if I need to adjust anything.

Thanks again for all your help!

Hey guys.

Im getting 2 GTX 460 OC 1gig cards and im wanting to know if the space between the PCI-E slots are going to be an issue?

The card has the single big fan design that its a mm or two higher than 2 expansion slots.

Currently i have a 6950 2gig and that is only about 3 or 4mm away from the second slot.

What do you guys think?

should be fine if you have decent airflow, since 460 doesnt get too hot
