Call of Duty: Modern Warfare3 for PC: Exclusive Developer Info

callofduty.com has published a blog entry from developer Infinity Ward / Sledgehammer detailing some of the features and improvements that will be in the upcoming MW3, to be released on November 8th:

I'm extremely excited about the PC version of Modern Warfare 3 this year, because we've been taking your feedback since Modern Warfare 2,and the franchise as a whole, on what you wanted to see in the PC version of Modern Warfare 3 and the team at Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games has put aton of emphasis on delivering a PC experience that brings in all the great things we added in Modern Warfare 2:
Lobby System, Matchmaking with a Party, Matchmaking for Public Games, Steam Integration (Friends List, Server Browser,Achievements, Join on Friends)
While combining it with your favorite features from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare:
Dedicated Servers (Join your favorite or set up your own,without any 3rd party hosting requirements), In-game Server Browser that allows you to filter by ping, map, gametype, hardcore, voice, password, and more. In addition, we're supporting PC specific features that give you even more control over your experience like RCON, Custom Game Saving, NoGFX / Audio Card Requirement on DS.exe, Voice Chat, and SSAO.

The blog also answers some hot-button questions, such as:

Will MW3 on PC have unique graphic options available?
Yes! You have a lot of graphic options, including enablingand disabling of new rendering features such as SSAO, you'll also be able to modify DOF, Shadows, Anti-Aliasing, Texture Resolution and more.

Will Modern Warfare 3 have Dedicated Servers?
Yes! Modern Warfare 3 supported matchmaking as well as Dedicated Servers, allowing players to find and filter via an in-game server browser or set-up their own Dedicated Server for complete control, without being restricted by any 3rd party hosting requirements. If looking for a Dedicated Server to join, if you choose not to set up your own, you can filter and favorite by Ping, Map, Gametype, Hardcore Variants, Voice, Password, and many other options.

Worryingly though:

Can we set our max FPS?
No. Setting Max FPS is not a user controllable option.

So, does this mean that gamers with 120Hz monitors will be stuck at 60fps gameplay? This surely would be a major annoyance and certainly would be for this writer. There's lots of other questions covered in the blog, but the decent graphics options are surely one of the things that make it stand out from a console port - a pet hate of PC gamers, with their vastly more powerful hardware. The maximum multiplayer count is just 18 currently, but this might increase by release day and of course, it will have LAN support. There's lots more good info over at the blog.

Dedicated servers are NOT ranked servers. But you will be able to play with most unlocked weapons. That will depend on how the admin setups the server. However, you won't be able to get any stats nor other achievement unlocks afaik. I really don't now if dedicated servers mean BO servers or from someone's home network. Also, I'm not clear on the matchmaking process (as that is ranked). So far I get the impression it will be just like IWnet. But until more details are provided I'm not 100% sure.

EDIT; I know it's been much agains MW3 since the MW2 debocle but let's fase it this has no base now - the old team is gone , if you don't know , MW2 was purposely sucked to fuck the PC community in order to stir up for activision "kick on the way out"

The Bowling doesn't really make decisions at IW and the current IW team is trying to fix reputation from MW2 .... "" You do not have to rank up in Public games to have access to weapons in Dedicated Servers, ""

I think people will still have negativity - albeit currently it looks baseless as this is practially a non issue, who cares about ranks , did you had them in COD2 , nope , and i played COD2 for 1500 hours and it's never boring (xfire proof)


But i know i won't like the story - im not into there cinematic USA-Vs-Middle-east kind of crap anymore ... i don't really care about the topic of the story. Simply i played so much of call of duty it's just enough once , and not that i hate it ... certainly i do hate MW2 and hopefully MW3 could fix that if it's more like COD4 ... and less "mindless shooting running gunning spawn kill".

In other words, they have "levelled down" the features to the lowest common denominator. Notice how vague and full of spin they were with that answer. I'll bet it's because you probably can't 'lean' on a console.

Very hard when you've got a large company that insists on making the product "different" to the previous one and decisions are made by committee. You then get useful features pulled or mangled and various other stupid design decisions. That make you do this:

For an example, compare the menus and options between Portal 1 and Portal 2. I can't remember the details now off the top of my head, but I compared them side by side at the time and P1 was definitely better (although the critical gameplay was much better and more advanced in P2). There's a current "standard" for writing game interfaces nowadays that seems to be based on the restriction of consoles and is dumbed down compared to what you used to get. :shadedshu

ooohhh oooohhh dedicated user hosted server = brilliant, the first literate educated game in 5 years, freaking awesome.

No more need to rely on incompetent hosting company, their primitive configured networks and staff that does not even know where the power button is on their mobile phones or pc's.

Selling points:
1st, This user hosted dedicated server alone = sale or buying 3 copy's no question asked even if the game sucks or not, no idea yet, still buying 3 copy's.
Damn just when BF3 was going to get my cash.

2nd, Does MW3 have ghost recon / graw co-op ogr equivalent gameplay 12 man team versus user created map and AI ?
BF3 apparently has ghost recon co-op ogr type gameplay, not sure about map editor.

Stats, who cares about a wall hacked stat.

I know I know, it's just sad that it seems to be asking the world for a game that is actually good not a re-skin of the same game I played 5 years ago.
