If you ever happen to get a smartphone with a 3g/4g connection, there's a free app called PDANet that turns your phone into a modem. I've been using it at work for better internet the past month and it works great.

One mod I would love to see with this game is a working, stable co-op mod.


Which mod specifically is that?

android and iphones can all be used as modems like that, hell mine works as a wifi access point so i can put it wherever gets the best signal.

I was recently a victim of bandwidth theft and it was no fun. Cost about $400 too. The wireless was even WPA encrypted, but there are tools to hack that. That said, a hotel would likely not see any difference.

I'm sorry for your loss, Did you not think to check your routers and block the Mac address (or even better set the router to only allow your own mac addresses to work on the network, it take a little time to setup but it is far safer then using encryption).. Most hotels have free open wi-fi, at least they do in the UK. Hence the reason a cantenna is an option if you can get a network. Another reason is in the UK it's not theft if you don't have to hack it. So you can use a hotels bandwith provided there are no restrictions in place. The us may have different laws. The last piece of information is in the UK we generally get unrestricted usage at a lower bandwidth. I have a 4Mb connection but have no cap on usage, and know of very few people with a cap.

As for your case, they hacked you. You should have gone to the police for theft and gotten a crime number. You had the mac addresses, and the IP and probably computer names as well. With those finding who is stealing your bandwith is pretty simple. Just make a directional filter for the router, work out the direction the theft is coming from. Then ask a neighbour to setup the router in there house, Get another direction. (even without a internet connection his pc will try to connect to your router). Then continue with this till you know the exact house.... Knock on his door and hand him the bill. You have his mac address... that should be proof enough for the courts. If they refuse to pay and the courts won't listen, at least you can exact some revenge.

There is no bandwidth to steal here. There is nothing here except the occasional internet interruption from either bad weather or the occasional ground oscillations when the moles throw a party and invite the hedgehogs and beavers.

I'm not complaining as I knew an update like this would take days with my connection. It's a good thing in a way as I've seen some of the issues people are having in this thread and now I have a bit of a clue how to deal with them. Thanks to all for posting their fixes.

Sadly I don't know much about wireless networking, only barely enough to block all but our own mac addresses... After the theft occurred*. My router was not loggin MACs or connections, so it's not a possibility to catch the thieves anymore, although this is a fairly sparse neighborhood and so I've got my idea who did it. But whatever, I don't really care, so long as it's all good now.

This game has quite a few amusing moments. There was this guy called drelas who was too strong for me to beat, so I baited a dragon to him and sat back with teh proverbial popcorn. Another time a dragon was chasing me so I pissed off some giants and they killed the dragon for me.

My only gripe so far (level 10 mage) is that mages aren't penalised for wearing armor. So I could go around in deadric armor without it affecting me negatively, which is stupid. You could argue that the lack of magicka related enchantments on robes and stuff is the penalty for using armor, but enchating makes that a moot point.
That and the difficulty. I've been playing on max difficulty from the beggining and it's been a bit too jumpy. Most of the time it's too easy but sometimes it's too hard (which is a good thing).

Also, I haven't swung a melee weapon or fired a single arrow so far.

have you completed magic college quests?

Huh the robes and that really help if you going to use only magic, faster magic regeneration ect. I dont play like that anyway, i kinda swap but mainly i use a sword and shield.

The only thing i would have liked is to be able to attack while on a horse, i find that enemies will target my horse a lot more than me. My horse got mauled and that was 1000 down the drain but i died shortly after and the last save was before my horse died lol.

50% faster mana regen is a massive buff, so you do get penalised for not using even basic mage robes.


i'm half mage half sword + shield, i dual wield my flamethrower hands to burn stuff to death, then change to sword (frost enchanted) when i run out of mana.

edit: i've got some dragon shouts i cant unlock, despite having collected two souls. how do i use them?

The 6950 (guess it could be a 6970 since it's unlocked) is a great card you could play skyrim fine with one.

Signed. I unlocked and OC'd mine to 950/1450, playing on Ultra, with tweaked ini for settings past ultra. I can play on max AA with some frame dips now and then, so I play on 2 AA and am happy, also running a few texture mods.

Duel wielding really helps keep the combat fresh in Skyrim. I like that you sometimes get a finisher cut scene where you slash a persons neck or gut them didnt the witcher 2 have those? Most of the reviews have said combat is clunky but i think its fine i quite like it being simple with the 2 mouse buttons, the animations are much better than the old engine.

i actually haven't played it with my keyboard/mouse at all. i am shocked. i had my 360 controller plugged in and it set it by default, and i just played from there. too immersed to switch. was nice though as i got the graphics, and the lounge chair

with the controller it's definitely not clunky, the best combat has ever been for sure in 3d elderscrolls. it's a game of such large scale that forgiving minor annoyances is a necessity. they would never get the game out if they were perfectionists. it's really a great example of how simply awesome work can be that strives to be more than it can perfectly achieve.

when so many devs only try for conservative progress or none at all, it's really just awesome to see games that try hard to do something different.

all that aside, i couldn't be happier with the game. i was having small texture issues with crossfire enabled so i disabled it and have some minor slowdowns.

i am really glad the dragons are basically an addition to a complete elderscrolls game, and not a replacement for a story.

id try magic later on, it will just be a minor skill for me , im more on the combat assassin for now (Altair/Ezio anyone? >8D).

I have yet to dual wield a dagger tho.

Also, during combat there are times that your opponent will have a very low health and stumble and crawl in the ground, saying "Stop! I Yield!" or sumthin, I could sometimes let em stand up again and fight or just burn them to a crisp with flame nuhehehe >8D

if you sheathe your weapon and hit E on them, i think they surrender and walk away. i do it to get out of fights when people catch me stealing.

Not-So-Pro-Tip: Butterflies are super easy to catch when they are just hanging there in suspended animation.

Some companies charge you extra for it, that's why I suggested PDANet.
