OFFICIAL Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim (Discussion)

Damn, just checked--Wolf Armor is classified as Heavy. BUT, it only has a weight of 4, so it wouldn't be too bad for a Mage since it is on par for most Heavy Armor at a fraction of the weight.

Skyrim the good the bad and the fugly

This small little log is to help newcommers and 0 day gamers get a little leg up when it comes to the big elder scrolls hit. This will be updated with the newest and latest fixes as I find them.

Crashing:

So your games crashing? Their are a few circumstantial things that cause this and a few easy fixes.

The most important is were is it crashing? Here are a few well known bugs.

(Boot menu after the skyrim logo game crashes to desktop)

This is a sound issue. you need to change your sound settings down to a maximum of 24bit 44100KHZ

29852.png

Game locks up or C2D when breaking Saarthal wall?

The easiest way to fix this is turning away very fast while its breaking. Or changing your graphics settings to low via the main menu (save exit retry on low)

Graphics:

FPS bobs like crazy. Narrowed this town to an issue with graphics card over clocks. Skyrim like oblivion is VERY sensative to OC's just as well so are the 285.79 nvidia drivers. high oc and these betas cause throttle down.

Fixing this is touch or go lowering your card clock is the easiest way. sometimes entering a new area fixes the problem. (graphics card ramps back out of limp mode into "3D Clock state")

If textures in the game start to flicker your shaders are usually to high.

If textures or far objects flicker or load slowly your memory is probably to high.

Misc:

you can reverse the "backwards" mouse 1 mouse 2 buttons but you need to remap the original "mouse 2" button first or you will get stuck in a button map loop.

Helpful Hints:
When being attacked if you cross water that you need to "swim" in the persuer almost always stops.

Take into consideration the area you are in. Some towns/lands are aligned with the empire the others the storm cloaks. The table in windhelm can help you here. Blue is storm cloak teritory and red the imperial cities. Crosshairs over the flags tell you the cities. This also seems relevant to who likes magic and who doesn't. Be careful who you chat with about being a mage or knowing any spells the conversation may result in them not saying anything or holding things back. take it neutral.

When battling a monster or mage that doesnt have an elemental name (such as frost spider) pay attention to the spells and surrounding regions weather pattern. Using a spell of the opposite element tends to do more damage.

The Draugr seem to have a pretty decent resistence to frost. Fire and lightening may help you more then hack and slash due to their armor. When you get overwhelmed use the "Unrelenting Force" shout its usually the first completed and very handy while it does do some damage use it in conjunction with your lightening and fire spells. It will push the horde off and buy you enough time to concentrate on one at a time as they fall and need to stand back up.

When facing a tough enemy in 1 on 1 combat freeze them with the "Ice Form" shout and shock them or attack them. using a fire spell will allow them to thaw quicker.

Puzzles puzzles everyware. Some of these are difficult but markers tell you the combo ahead of time. Remember think abstractly its not always in a liner order if the combo pillers are on one side of the hall and some are on the other it might not be about which comes first but which comes first on what side of the wall.

buttons levers and traps think in 3 dimensions. small curves etc are great hiding places for the gate lever or door button most of the dungeons are trapped so take in everything before you bite the bullet.

For the cheaters:
As much as I would like to say you should be burned at the stake I figured id save my time and others when you come crying about bugs that happen while your cheating.

When you find yourself in god mode but your over encumbered you may still walk slow to remedy this press "R" or the equivalent key map to sheath your spell/sword and press it once more to allow you to run again.

toggling clip mode is bad if you have clicked on an object. it can cause the map to do all sorts of funny things.

Also in clip mode certain events dont happen correctly. For example if your too lazy to find the key to the door the NPC's on the other side may not respond to you until the door is unlocked and opened properly.

Some screens from a day of Skyrim today:

First, a couple glitches:

Look at my character smithing the wrong way

My character at one point:
I prefer the glass armor over the dragonscale armor, each piece of dragon scale is only a few points better, but it doesn't look nearly as nice. I did have the glass boots, but I sold them already before I took the screenshot, and my ebony gloves give +30% archery damage

Then a few pretty shots:
This was cool to walk in on

So far, a lot of fun. Looking forward to making a typical warrior type and mage type next after this guy (thief type).

the more i play, the more i mess around with the crafting, enchanting, etc... the more fun it gets.

i'm breaking into places for main quests and looting cabbages for christs sake... and then i get excited that i know how to cook them.

Exactly!!! I broke into a house, and discovered that I could click on the cooking pot, and cooked everything I could find ;) Then I went looking for more Veggies: that vegetable soup is nice, at my level anyway :)

How much like Oblivion is it?

How much like Oblivion is it?

Tons, and Not at All.....

Kind of an ambiguous question :(

For me, it's enough of an Elder Scroll game, to make it exactly what I wanted, and it's different enough from the previous versions, to make it exactly what I wanted :)

The thing is I kinda hated Oblivion. It had no focus and didn't feel like an RPG at all. More like an action game with swords and a stupid AI, and terrible dialouge (Bethsoft can't do dialouge).

How much like Oblivion is it?

It is pretty much oblivion but with better graphics, textures, animations and a deeper and more flexible combat/skill system imo.

i wouldnt say it has better graphics at all! Its got long reflective surfaces that fade when your close. Other then that id say the graphics are the same the real diffirence that i see is that instead of oak in oblivion they use berch and pine. Then you have random stuff like rabbits running around.

Skyrim weird lag?

Hey, i recently got skyrim with update 1.1 (latest) and i've got latest GPU drivers, all drivers updated etc, but i cannot run skyrim on max aa, with 16aa, extra i get 1-10fps..

my specs are:
CoolerMaster V6GT CPU Cooler
Intel Core i5 2500K OCed @ 4.8GHz
ASUS Radeon 6970 DirectCU II 2GB
Corsair TX-750 V2 Power Supply
ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 Motherboard
Corsair Vengeance CMZ8GX3M2A1600C8R 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3

i have to run the game on ultra but with only like 2aa etc..

please help? i should be able to run 16aa all maxed on my computer with no lag, i get 50fps on bf3 all maxed

i would. The graphics are definitely better than oblivion. the most obvious is the character models, but it is easily noticeable in the environment as well.

google image search oblivion vs skyrim, the differences are glaringly obvious. i don't see how you can imply that they are not improved. I think your comment about the only difference being tree types is pretty ridiculous. example(morrowind, oblivion, skyrim):

it seems to me each title is meant to convey a certain feeling or attitude. although the game is by definition open, the stories are crafted around specific races/character types for each game.
morrowind was dark magic, oblivion was righteous religious warrior, and skyrim is nordic badass. even if your character doesn't match the theme of the game, it is very definitely a theme.

as for art style. I really hated how smooth everything was in oblivion, skyrim has texture and dirt, it's much more immersive imo. so while i can't say the graphics blow you away compared to oblivion, they are very definitely better. I have already had more awe moments with the scenes it creates than i ever did in oblivion. as someone else said, this is the sequel morrowind deserved :)

Wondering if there is anyway to disable the UI to take some screens. Just snapped these

and think it would have looked even more amazing (maybe an ice desktop) if the UI hadn't been visible.

Yeah run it in DX9, I don't think the game actually uses any DX10 effects, but I could be wrong.

Type TM into the console to remove them, i guess same to bring them back.

i guess i just dont see it. Maybe my oblivion is modded and iv forgotten. either way Im simply not impressed with it. not enough color. skyrim has very dark shades of mostly neutral tones. excluding an aurora borialis everything is dark blue, grey orange green or yellow.

i guess i just dont see it.

i can understand you not liking it, wanting color, or wanting more - but to say you don't see the very obvious difference in detail and texture quality is simply confusing.
i think you may be spending too much time in the dungeons ;) not saying the above ground world is vibrant, but there is enough color imo.

any more and they risk looking cartoonish to some degree, and to me that would ruin the ENTIRE experience.

If the shadow quivering bothers you, open Skyrim.ini and under the Display heading add:

fSunShadowUpdateTime=0
fSunUpdateThreshold=0

i agree to much color saturation is bad i just saw alot of this shit in oblivion and for "ultra" i expected more.

Thankfully i don't spend my time in game staring at trees. I've quests to do and dragons to kill.

GFX are far superior to Oblivion. I think you're being a tad petty.

Whether they're up to your exacting standards I'm not sure but better than Oblivion without a shadow of a doubt.

I left Lydia in my house in Whiterun so she wouldn't glitch or die on me. I went back there after about 10 hours of play and she wasn't there.

I went up to Dragonsreach, since that is where she is before you get the house. She wasn't there. She doesn't have a map marker either.

I dunno how to bring her back.

well its a matter of opinion. I immerse myself in a world that was marketed as one to be immersed in. The game looks good at a distance but thats not exactly what i ment by graphics. using a brighter white color pallet on the side of the tree that the sun comes up on in the game looks pretty but when you actually look at it its not all that great. Dragons are cool and shit but their are far more trees then dragons and they dont have cars so I walk alot.

yeah i don't use companions. i just don't see how they could really make the experience better, as being dependent on ai for that long is just asking for problems to arise.

I got married

congrats man :p

Bah i wish i had time to play. Between my studies and work i just am to busy. At least thanksgiving break is next week. Will have all week to play :rockout:

congrats man :p

i think she married a man ;)
i heard that was in here, but i haven't seen any opportunities yet... good to know :)
