my internet connection sucks so the retail skyrim is a must for me, besides its cheaper when i purchase it in retail anyway (in our region that is, only ~34 USD day one lol)

semi-ot about steam.
I purchased Serious Sam 3 BFE recently, and as usual, my connection sucks and its taking a long time to download from steam, what i did was borrowed a friend's "demo disc" (lol), and overwrite some (downloaded) game data while steam is off (not the important steam dlls). Opened steam again, then it verified the game data, and it detected that download is complete and is updating and completing the installation, after updating i was able to play fine as if i downloaded the game Now off to go for some serious co-op >8]
(I use this game to take some break on long Skyrim sessions hehe)

Even with my rather brutal ini tweaks I got a couple fps improvement. Now someone figure out how to move shadows to the gpu.

I doubt ianpatt will post this here and I know a lot of people here have a lot of performance issues. People are already reporting serious performance increases, up to and beyond +20 FPS on High/Ultra in cities (people going from low 20s to high 40s, etc.), and can improve performance on both high-end and low-end machines This optimization is for your CPU as the now-famous Arisu explains:

This patch will improve your frame rate by up to 40% in all CPU-dependent situations, i.e. especially in cities.
It works mostly by rewriting some x87 FPU code and inlining a whole ton of useless getter functions along the critical paths because the developers at Bethesda, for some reason, compiled the game without using any of the optimization flags for release builds.

For those wary of downloading this plugin because it was made by an unknown author, don't worry, it was actually ianpatt (one of the main developers of SKSE) who actually compiled the plugin from source provided by the original author of the optimization code.

To use SKSE, just download it and place it in your main Skyrim folder, then run Skyrim using "skse_loader" which is included with SKSE. The plugin goes in Skyrim\Data\SKSE\plugins (a folder which won't exist if you've never used SKSE, so you'll have to make it).

Note: If using the skse_loader crashes for you on Windows Vista/7, right-click it and use "Run as Administrator". Works for some, even when it shouldn't.

This has a good chance to fix/reduce people's problems with various "kill areas" which destroy their FPS.

Note: Currently must be compiled for a specific version of Skyrim, so only 1.3.10 compatible right now.

Hopefully Bethesda will learn something from this source and release their own patch by the end of 2012!

Got i5-2300 + GTX480 SOC installed this, seem to be getting the same minimum fps as before. I also made sure I followed the installation instructions: copied the launcher into the main skyrim folder and the .dll in Skyrim/Data/SKSE/Plugins (last two folders I had to make myself as per instructions). Am I missing anything here?

Well Bethesda incorporated LAA or their version of it, so if they gains are truly that good, then may as well add the SKSE tweak in the future.

But who knows, apparently Bethesda has taken an arrow to the knee until next year and I'm sure their game testers have had a guts full of the game.

I use Playclaw, it's just like fraps but lets you put overlays on screen like, cpu usage per core, gpu usage and vram usage. Got it for free as a giveaway, it's a nifty program, also has a lot more options for recording videos than fraps.

The reason is if you download it you are license to used the game and don't actually own anything.

Massive legal advantage.

MSI Afterburner can display GPU usage, fan speed, GPU temps VRAM usage framerate in realtime as well and its also free. It can also record videos and take screenshots (aside from the obvious overclocking and tweaking utility that it is)

for some weird reason, msi afterburner On-screen monitoring doesn't work with skyrim... It works with all the other games I have, and I remember it used to work way back before I started modding skyrim...

Also, can 1 of you guys point me towards a Armor and Weapon Retexture Mod?

(I mean one that is a major overhaul of all the armors and all weapons, not just some single armors and the like...)

@widjaja: Oh yeah, I keep forgetting to try that.

My max RAM usage is only 2.66gb, max GPU is 831mb, and it gets up to 79c. Max CPU usage is 25%, two cores usually run at about 50%, and two at about 25%. The other two are just above idle.

Does anyone know if crossfire is utilized by skyrim? I'm getting the second card anyway.

IF you are using other mod/utility such as FXAA add-on or some other mod that has d3d9.dll on it, it would have trouble displaying the OSD. I believe this has sumthin to do with fxaa and the OSD occupying the same address space during operation
