Windows Flag Logo Gets a Facelift, Not A Flag Anymore

The waving flag logo of Microsoft's Windows trademark has reportedly undergone a facelift to keep up with the radically new user interface called "Metro". The new logo will take effect with the next major version of Windows. Metro is Microsoft's most drastic user interface change since Windows 95, and consists of organizing interactive information (smart application shortcuts, gadgets, images, and slideshows), in rectangular slices of the screen-space. The Windows flag logo is redesigned to reflect this change, it's now flat, angled, with all four rectangles in the same plane. CNBeta scored a 1-color version of the logo, and made mock-ups of what it could look like on devices (such as tablets and keyboards).

That logo is too straightforward and lacks the personality of the current one. Mock-up or not, it's not an improvement at all.

Under normal layout rules that window should be inversed. The smaller end should be pointing to the text instead of the wider end.

Why? Because any "Arrow" like shape should always lead the eye into a layout. Not out of it. This mock-up was done by a noob or a culture that reads from right to left instead of left to right.

Are you serious? it's a mock up, ie not real ie just something someone made up and said it could look like this. Though I agree with the point you made about it leading into the layout as they sue techniques like this in magazine/tv advertising all the time.

I could really care less anyway as since getting an SSD I barely see the flag anyway, it might be there logo but it really doesn't matter imo what it looks like as it's never used, wonder how many people are going to rush out and by a new keyboard now cause they think their old start button ones won't work with the new logo

It's a window and it's opening towards the text to give the impression of a fresh beginning that MS would like 8/Metro to bring. Like when you open a window and that cool morning air hits your face, pulling you firmly from the clutches of darkness. Just then, the sun peaks over the horizon bathing your naked body with an energy that allows you to accomplish anything!

I don't like the "metro" styling at all. From 4bit and 8bit pictures and icons from 1992 back to the same thing in 2012. WHY!? What was wrong with glass glossy icons in Vista and Win7 ? They looked great and they still do.

My question is will Widows 7 get some of the new features that will be in 8? I'd like to see the new taskmanager and even more importantly WDDM 1.2 at the very least in a Windows 7 update.

Or are they going to hold out on us.

One of the main rules of advertising is if a consumer has think "think" you have failed as a marketer. I like the logo. It just needs to be inversed due to how the human brain works. No other reason.

But like I said I have a feeling this mock up was made by a culture that reads from right to left. IF that's the case then the layout is fine. It just wouldnt work as well in the western world as it would in the east.

Assuming this is a legitimate change by Microsoft that will come to pass, not some unsubstantiated rumor, I don’t think its that big of a departure from older versions of the Windows logo. Like it or not, I think its still recognizable and make no mistake we have seen a monochrome Windows logos before. This isn’t much different then Apple dropping the colors in their Apple logo.

If you took an American, Canadian, British (UK) or typically any other flag and placed it in a similar flat perspective orientation like this it would still be easily recognizable,…. So I don’t see the problem,….

My only question is when are they going to rename “Windows” to “Tiles”,…….

I just can't see this being the final product. Maybe it's a concept art from the advertising agency, or maybe it's simply one of many variations to be used (the mono-coloured one could be for tablets, for instance).
Without the word 'Windows' next to it there is nothing about that logo that would make me think of Windows or Microsoft. If they kept the same four colours as previous, then yeah, I could see this being used.
Time will tell I guess ... wait to we see it on retail boxes.

Could be a strategic release by the marketing agency to get some real-world feedback.
